Robust error estimates in weak norms for advection dominated transport problems with rough data
We consider mixing problems in the form of transient convection--diffusion
equations with a velocity vector field with multiscale character and rough
data. We assume that the velocity field has two scales, a coarse scale with
slow spatial variation, which is responsible for advective transport and a fine
scale with small amplitude that contributes to the mixing. For this problem we
consider the estimation of filtered error quantities for solutions computed
using a finite element method with symmetric stabilization. A posteriori error
estimates and a priori error estimates are derived using the multiscale
decomposition of the advective velocity to improve stability. All estimates are
independent both of the P\'eclet number and of the regularity of the exact
solution
A multiscale method for heterogeneous bulk-surface coupling
In this paper, we construct and analyze a multiscale (finite element) method
for parabolic problems with heterogeneous dynamic boundary conditions. As
origin, we consider a reformulation of the system in order to decouple the
discretization of bulk and surface dynamics. This allows us to combine
multiscale methods on the boundary with standard Lagrangian schemes in the
interior. We prove convergence and quantify explicit rates for low-regularity
solutions, independent of the oscillatory behavior of the heterogeneities. As a
result, coarse discretization parameters, which do not resolve the fine scales,
can be considered. The theoretical findings are justified by a number of
numerical experiments including dynamic boundary conditions with random
diffusion coefficients
An Analysis of Galerkin Proper Orthogonal Decomposition for Subdiffusion
In this work, we develop a novel Galerkin-L1-POD scheme for the subdiffusion
model with a Caputo fractional derivative of order in time,
which is often used to describe anomalous diffusion processes in heterogeneous
media. The nonlocality of the fractional derivative requires storing all the
solutions from time zero. The proposed scheme is based on continuous piecewise
linear finite elements, L1 time stepping, and proper orthogonal decomposition
(POD). By constructing an effective reduced-order scheme using problem-adapted
basis functions, it can significantly reduce the computational complexity and
storage requirement. We shall provide a complete error analysis of the scheme
under realistic regularity assumptions by means of a novel energy argument.
Extensive numerical experiments are presented to verify the convergence
analysis and the efficiency of the proposed scheme.Comment: 25 pp, 5 figure
