Population Growth and Other Statistics of Middle-sized Irish Towns. General Research Series Paper No. 85, April 1976
The basic aim of the study is the presentation of tables of comparative
statistical data relating to 97 towns with population 5OO-1O,OOO in
1971 and analyses of such data. The exclusion of the four County Boroughs
and Dun Laoghaire together with twelve other large towns and all small
towns and villages, was to impart a degree of homogeneity to the inquiry, as
regards function of town. The 97 towns range from Mullingar, the largest
with a population of 9,245 to Cootehill with 1,542
Multilevel functional principal component analysis
The Sleep Heart Health Study (SHHS) is a comprehensive landmark study of
sleep and its impacts on health outcomes. A primary metric of the SHHS is the
in-home polysomnogram, which includes two electroencephalographic (EEG)
channels for each subject, at two visits. The volume and importance of this
data presents enormous challenges for analysis. To address these challenges, we
introduce multilevel functional principal component analysis (MFPCA), a novel
statistical methodology designed to extract core intra- and inter-subject
geometric components of multilevel functional data. Though motivated by the
SHHS, the proposed methodology is generally applicable, with potential
relevance to many modern scientific studies of hierarchical or longitudinal
functional outcomes. Notably, using MFPCA, we identify and quantify
associations between EEG activity during sleep and adverse cardiovascular

A Survey of the Learning Behaviour of Open University students
This survey forms a crucial part of research completed by the Learning Innovation team to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying study habits and learning behaviour of Open University (OU) students to inform the future development of systems, tools and platforms.
This research validates the themes that emerged from the previous report, ‘Study behaviours in an increasingly digital world: Learning habits, top tips and 'study hacks' questionnaire survey’ (Ellis, Gallagher and Peasgood, 2017). Analysis carried out on the data from that survey revealed eight possible learning behaviours that underpinned the student responses. In order to validate those original findings a new survey was designed. This report explains the findings of that survey.
The survey consisted of 55 behavioural and attitudinal statements aligned to the learning behaviours, some of which were based upon survey instruments from the literature. Survey statements were written to explore each of these on a five-point scale (‘Very true for me’ to ‘Not at all true for me’) in order to identify the concepts that describe the behaviours and preferences of OU students through a process of Principle Component Analysis (PCA). In addition, the survey included questions to inform the analysis and explore potential confounding factors: accessing OU content, access to the web, and technological self-efficacy. The technological self-efficacy statements were selected from the OU’s Digital Competency Framework for Level 1 students. The survey was peer reviewed and piloted, before being sent to a generalised student population. The overall response rate was 12.7% with 524 valid responses received.
Seven clear learning behaviours were identified through PCA, and a cluster analysis of the data was carried out. These learning behaviours are:

Internationalization strategies of companies in the wine industry in Portugal – context, forms of action and performance.
This research project aims to analyze the competitive environment of companies in the wine sector in Portugal and assess the implications in the development of contingent strategic guidelines and different performances.Proposes to apply the methodological framework the IKST – Integrated Key for Strategic Thought for international expansion. The research was carried out at two levels: at a preliminary level – a general characterisation was made of the companies as to their resources, and at a central level – the examination of the strategic aspect of the companies was carried out. The research involved the collection of primary data (survey of 164 companies in the sector) and secondary data (from documentary nature). Explores the strategic aspect, analyzing the sector in terms of global and national context, in order to design a diagnostic context of action, using the models of PEST and 5 Forces. Identifies, based on various statistical techniques, the adopted style of strategic thought and the profile in terms of contextual variables, as well as the underlying economic performance
Thematic mapper data quality and performance assessment in renewable resource/agricultural remote sensing
A "quick look" investigation of the initial LANDSAT-4, thematic mapper (TM) scene received from Goddard Space Flight Center was performed to gain early insight into the characteristics of TM data. The initial scene, containing only the first four bands of the seven bands recorded by the TM, was acquired over the Detroit, Michigan, area on July 20, 1982. It yielded abundant information for scientific investigation. A wide variety of studies were conducted to assess all aspects of TM data. They ranged from manual analyses of image products to detect obvious optical, electronic, or mechanical defects to detailed machine analyses of the digital data content for evaluation of spectral separability of vegetative/nonvegetative classes. These studies were applied to several segments extracted from the full scene. No attempt was made to perform end-to-end statistical evaluations. However, the output of these studies do identify a degree of positive performance from the TM and its potential for advancing state-of-the-art crop inventory and condition assessment technology
Investigating microstructural variation in the human hippocampus using non-negative matrix factorization
In this work we use non-negative matrix factorization to identify patterns of microstructural variance in the human hippocampus. We utilize high-resolution structural and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging data from the Human Connectome Project to query hippocampus microstructure on a multivariate, voxelwise basis. Application of non-negative matrix factorization identifies spatial components (clusters of voxels sharing similar covariance patterns), as well as subject weightings (individual variance across hippocampus microstructure). By assessing the stability of spatial components as well as the accuracy of factorization, we identified 4 distinct microstructural components. Furthermore, we quantified the benefit of using multiple microstructural metrics by demonstrating that using three microstructural metrics (T1-weighted/T2-weighted signal, mean diffusivity and fractional anisotropy) produced more stable spatial components than when assessing metrics individually. Finally, we related individual subject weightings to demographic and behavioural measures using a partial least squares analysis. Through this approach we identified interpretable relationships between hippocampus microstructure and demographic and behavioural measures. Taken together, our work suggests non-negative matrix factorization as a spatially specific analytical approach for neuroimaging studies and advocates for the use of multiple metrics for data-driven component analyses
Subaru Spectroscopy of the Gravitational Lens HST 14176+5226: Implications for a Large Cosmological Constan
We present new optical spectroscopy of the lens elliptical galax in the
``Einstein Cross'' lens system HST 14176+5226, using the Faint Object Camera
and Spectrograph (FOCAS) of the Subaru t Our spectroscopic observations are
aimed at measuring the stella dispersion of the lens galaxy, located at high
redshift of z_L= as an important component to lens models. We have measured
this 230 +- 14 km s^{-1} (1 sigma) inside 0.35 effective radi based on the
comparison between the observed galaxy spectrum and templates of three G-K
giants by means of the Fourier cross-corr To extract the significance of this
information on the geometry universe which also affects the lensing of the
background image, to fit three different lens models to the available data of
the Provided that the lens galaxy has the structural and dynamical p (i.e., its
radial density profile, core radius, and velocity ani similar to those of local
elliptical galaxies, we calculate the function for the simultaneous
reproduction of both the observed and newly measured velocity dispersion of the
lens. Although the interval depends rather sensitively on the adopted lens
models o parameters, our experiments suggest the larger likelihood for a
cosmological constant, Omega_Lambda: formal 1 sigma lower Omega_Lambda in the
flat universe ranges 0.73 to 0.97, where lower limit is basically unavailable.
This method for determinin model is thus dependent on lens models but is
insensitive to oth ambiguities, such as the dust absorption or the evolutionary
eff galaxies. Exploring spectroscopic observations of more lens gala redshift
may minimize the model uncertainties and thus place a m constraint on
