An investigation to examine the most appropriate methodology to capture historical and modern preserved anatomical specimens for use in the digital age to improve access: a pilot study
Anatomico-pathological specimens constitute a valuable component of many medical museums or
institutional collections but can be limited in their impact on account of both physical and intellectual
inaccessibility. Further concerns relate to conservation as anatomical specimens may be subject to
tissue deterioration, constraints imposed by spatial or financial limitations of the host institution, or
accident-based destruction. In awareness of these issues, a simple and easily implementable
methodology to increase accessibility, impact and conservation of anatomical specimens is proposed
which combines photogrammetry, object virtual reality (object VR), and interactive portable document
format (PDF) with supplementary historical and anatomical commentary. The methodology was
developed using wet, dry, and plastinated specimens from the historical and modern collections in the
Museum of Anatomy at the University of Glasgow. It was found that photogrammetry yielded excellent
results for plastinated specimens and showed potential for dry specimens, while object VR produced
excellent photorealistic virtual specimens for all materials visualised. Use of PDF as output format was
found to allow for the addition of textual, visual, and interactive content, and as such supplemented the
virtual specimen with multidisciplinary information adaptable to the needs of various audiences. The
results of this small-scale pilot study indicate the beneficial nature of combining these established
techniques into a methodology for the digitisation and utilisation of historical anatomical collections in
particular, but also collections of material culture more broadly
The Wiltshire Wills Feasibility Study
The Wiltshire and Swindon Record Office has nearly ninety thousand wills in its care. These records are neither adequately catalogued nor secured against loss by facsimile microfilm copies. With support from the Heritage Lottery Fund the Record Office has begun to produce suitable finding aids for the material. Beginning with this feasibility study the Record Office is developing a strategy to ensure the that facsimiles to protect the collection against risk of loss or damage and to improve public access are created.<p></p>
This feasibility study explores the different methodologies that can be used to assist the preservation and conservation of the collection and improve public access to it. The study aims to produce a strategy that will enable the Record Office to create digital facsimiles of the Wills in its care for access purposes and to also create preservation quality microfilms. The strategy aims to seek the most cost effective and time efficient approach to the problem and identifies ways to optimise the processes by drawing on the experience of other similar projects. This report provides a set of guidelines and recommendations to ensure the best use of the resources available for to provide the most robust preservation strategy and to ensure that future access to the Wills as an information resource can be flexible, both local and remote, and sustainable
Archives Conservation Discussion Group 2011: Digitization and Its Effect on Conservation Treatment Decisions: How Has Wide-Spread Digitizing of Collections Changed Our Approach to Treatment?
In line with this yearâs AIC theme: ETHOS, LOGOS, PATHOS: ethical principles and critical thinking in conservation, The Archives Conservation Discussion Group 2011 examined the impact of providing digital collections in museums and libraries, and their conservation implications. Presentations and a subsequent discussion covered topics such as: How conservators are balancing ethical concerns, especially as dictated by the AIC Code of Ethics, with increased demand from digital projects. How conservators are keeping pace with large-scale or fast-paced digitizing projects, while maintaining standards. And the impact of limiting access to original materials by providing digital surrogates and its effect on treatment decisions
An information and communications technology (ICT)-enabled method for collecting and collating information about pre-service teachers' pedagogical beliefs regarding the integration of ICT
This paper describes a method that utilized technology to collect and collate quantitative and qualitative data about preâservice teachersâ use of networked technologies during a 12âweek undergraduate course, and the impact of this use on their pedagogical beliefs regarding the integration of information and communications technology (ICT). The technologies used captured and analysed studentsâ spoken and written communication while engaging in four synchronous online tasks, and also collected evaluation data from online interviews, surveys and diaries. The richness of data afforded by this ICTâenabled method enabled the research to produce a rich narrative of how the students used the technology and provided evidence of a change in preâservice teachersâ pedagogical beliefs during the course
Guidance for benthic habitat mapping: an aerial photographic approach
This document, Guidance for Benthic Habitat Mapping: An Aerial Photographic Approach, describes proven technology that can be applied in an operational manner by state-level scientists and resource managers. This information is based on the experience gained by NOAA Coastal Services Center staff and state-level cooperators in the production of a series of benthic habitat data sets in Delaware, Florida, Maine, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, the Virgin Islands, and Washington, as well as during Center-sponsored workshops on coral remote sensing and seagrass and aquatic habitat assessment. The original benthic habitat document, NOAA Coastal Change Analysis Program (C-CAP): Guidance for Regional Implementation (Dobson et al.), was published by the
Department of Commerce in 1995. That document summarized procedures that were to be used by scientists throughout the United States to develop consistent and reliable
coastal land cover and benthic habitat information. Advances in technology and new methodologies for generating these data created the need for this updated report,
which builds upon the foundation of its predecessor
