    Perceptions of Doctoral Graduates on the Usefulness of Written Reflections as an Instructional Strategy

    One of the goals of the Ed.D. in Leadership and Professional Practice at Trevecca Nazarene University is for candidates to be reflective practitioners. Since the inception of the program in 1999, written reflections as an instructional strategy has been encouraged by the administration and used by several professors. This focus is supported by the conceptual framework that informs all courses and programs in the School of Education and includes the national standards adopted by INTASC (Interstate New Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium) which calls for teacher education candidates to be reflective practitioners who plan, implement, and evaluate effectively. This standard is applied to all programs, including those at the master’s and doctoral levels. Research by Ballantyne and Packer (1995) in Studies in Continuing Education reported that the analysis of journal entries by 13 students enrolled in education doctoral programs confirmed the usefulness of journals in reflecting on and connecting academic learning and experience

    Like other states, South Carolina has experienced a shortage of educators at all organizational levels within its school districts. Given this dynamic and the relatively limited opportunities for practitioners to earn advanced degrees, several South Carolina institutions of higher education banded together to form a consortium that would provide additional opportunities for educators to earn the degree of Educational Specialist (EdS) with the potential to seamlessly complete doctoral studies. This consortium partnership resulted in a new doctoral program and new EdS programs, all based on the principles of the Carnegie Project on the Education Doctorate (CPED). The synergy that unfolded between institutions resulted in inter-institutional planning, the co-teaching of classes, shared professional development, and collaborative grant writing. This manuscript, which specifically focuses on the partnership between Clemson University and Winthrop University, provides an overview of the goals of the partnership as well as program themes and outcomes

    Actas de las Jornadas de Investigación Predoctoral en Ingeniería InformáticaThis volume contains the proceedings of the Primeras Jornadas de Investigación Predoctoral en Ingeniería Informática - First Doctoral Consortium in Computer Science, JIPII 2021, which was held online on June 15th, 2021. The aim of JIPII 2021 was to provide a forum for PhD students to present and discuss their research under the guidance of a panel of senior researchers. The advances in their PhD theses under development in the Doctoral Program in Computer Science were presented in the Consortium. This Doctoral Program belongs to the Doctoral School of the University of Cadiz (EDUCA). Different stages of research were covered, from the most incipient phase, such as the PhD Thesis plans (or even a Master’s Thesis), to the most advanced phases in which the defence of the PhD Thesis is imminent. We enjoyed twenty very nice and interesting talks, organized in four sessions. We had a total of fifty participants, including speakers and attendees, with an average of thirty-two people in the morning sessions and an average of twenty people in the afternoon sessions. Several people contributed to the success of JIPII 2021. We are grateful to the Academic Committee of the Doctoral Program in Computer Science and the School of Engineering for their support. We would like also to thank the Program Committee for their work in reviewing the papers, as well as all the students and supervisors for their interest and participation. The project addresses such root causes of environmental problems in Mongolia, Ukraine and Vietnam, as poorly formulated policies, inadequate selection of management actions and the lack of suitable technology, by building capacity for academic excellence in doctoral training in environmental studies in partner countries (PCs) and beyond.     Building capacity for public and population health research in Africa : the consortium for advanced research training in Africa (CARTA) model

    Background: Globally, sub-Saharan Africa bears the greatest burden of disease. Strengthened research capacity to understand the social determinants of health among different African populations is key to addressing the drivers of poor health and developing interventions to improve health outcomes and health systems in the region. Yet, the continent clearly lacks centers of research excellence that can generate a strong evidence base to address the region’s socio-economic and health problems. Objective and program overview: We describe the recently launched Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA), which brings together a network of nine academic and four research institutions from West, East, Central, and Southern Africa, and select northern universities and training institutes. CARTA’s program of activities comprises two primary, interrelated, and mutually reinforcing objectives: to strengthen research infrastructure and capacity at African universities; and to support doctoral training through the creation of a collaborative doctoral training program in population and public health. The ultimate goal of CARTA is to build local research capacity to understand the determinants of population health and effectively intervene to improve health outcomes and health systems. Conclusions: CARTA’s focus on the local production of networked and high-skilled researchers committed to working in sub-Saharan Africa, and on the concomitant increase in local research and training capacity of African universities and research institutes addresses the inability of existing programs to create a critical mass of well-trained and networked researchers across the continent. The initiative’s goal of strengthening human resources and university-wide systems critical to the success and sustainability of research productivity in public and population health will rejuvenate institutional teaching, research, and administrative systems
