    This thesis proposes an Intrusion Detection System, WiFi Miner, which applies an infrequent pattern association rule mining Apriori technique to wireless network packets captured through hardware sensors for purposes of real time detection of intrusive or anomalous packets. Contributions of the proposed system includes effectively adapting an efficient data mining association rule technique to important problem of intrusion detection in a wireless network environment using hardware sensors, providing a solution that eliminates the need for hard-to-obtain training data in this environment, providing increased intrusion detection rate and reduction of false alarms. The proposed system, WiFi Miner, solution approach is to find frequent and infrequent patterns on pre-processed wireless connection records using infrequent pattern finding Apriori algorithm also proposed by this thesis. The proposed Online Apriori-Infrequent algorithm improves the join and prune step of the traditional Apriori algorithm with a rule that avoids joining itemsets not likely to produce frequent itemsets as their results, thereby improving efficiency and run times significantly. A positive anomaly score is assigned to each packet (record) for each infrequent pattern found while a negative anomaly score is assigned for each frequent pattern found. So, a record with final positive anomaly score is considered as anomaly based on the presence of more infrequent patterns than frequent patterns found

    NeuDetect: A neural network data mining system for wireless network intrusion detection

    This thesis proposes an Intrusion Detection System, NeuDetect, which applies Neural Network technique to wireless network packets captured through hardware sensors for purposes of real time detection of anomalous packets. To address the problem of high false alarm rate confronted by the current wireless intrusion detection systems, this thesis presents a method of applying the artificial neural networks technique to the wireless network intrusion detection system. The proposed system solution approach is to find normal and anomalous patterns on preprocessed wireless packet records by comparing them with training data using Back-propagation algorithm. An anomaly score is assigned to each packet by calculating the difference between the output error and threshold. If the anomaly score is positive then the wireless packet is flagged as anomalous and is negative then the packet is flagged as normal. If the anomaly score is zero or close to zero it will be flagged as an unknown attack and will be sent back to training process for re-evaluation

    AVOIDIT IRS: An Issue Resolution System To Resolve Cyber Attacks

    Cyber attacks have greatly increased over the years and the attackers have progressively improved in devising attacks against specific targets. Cyber attacks are considered a malicious activity launched against networks to gain unauthorized access causing modification, destruction, or even deletion of data. This dissertation highlights the need to assist defenders with identifying and defending against cyber attacks. In this dissertation an attack issue resolution system is developed called AVOIDIT IRS (AIRS). AVOIDIT IRS is based on the attack taxonomy AVOIDIT (Attack Vector, Operational Impact, Defense, Information Impact, and Target). Attacks are collected by AIRS and classified into their respective category using AVOIDIT.Accordingly, an organizational cyber attack ontology was developed using feedback from security professionals to improve the communication and reusability amongst cyber security stakeholders. AIRS is developed as a semi-autonomous application that extracts unstructured external and internal attack data to classify attacks in sequential form. In doing so, we designed and implemented a frequent pattern and sequential classification algorithm associated with the five classifications in AVOIDIT. The issue resolution approach uses inference to educate the defender on the plausible cyber attacks. The AIRS can work in conjunction with an intrusion detection system (IDS) to provide a heuristic to cyber security breaches within an organization. AVOIDIT provides a framework for classifying appropriate attack information, which is fundamental in devising defense strategies against such cyber attacks. The AIRS is further used as a knowledge base in a game inspired defense architecture to promote game model selection upon attack identification. Future work will incorporate honeypot attack information to improve attack identification, classification, and defense propagation.In this dissertation, 1,025 common vulnerabilities and exposures (CVEs) and over 5,000 lines of log files instances were captured in the AIRS for analysis. Security experts were consulted to create rules to extract pertinent information and algorithms to correlate identified data for notification. The AIRS was developed using the Codeigniter [74] framework to provide a seamless visualization tool for data mining regarding potential cyber attacks relative to web applications. Testing of the AVOIDIT IRS revealed a recall of 88%, precision of 93%, and a 66% correlation metric

    Applying Machine Learning to Cyber Security

    Intrusion Detection Systems (IDS) nowadays are a very important part of a system. In the last years many methods have been proposed to implement this kind of security measure against cyber attacks, including Machine Learning and Data Mining based. In this work we discuss in details the family of anomaly based IDSs, which are able to detect never seen attacks, paying particular attention to adherence to the FAIR principles. This principles include the Accessibility and the Reusability of software. Moreover, as the purpose of this work is the assessment of what is going on in the state of the art we have selected three approaches, according to their reproducibility and we have compared their performances with a common experimental setting. Lastly real world use case has been analyzed, resulting in the proposal of an usupervised ML model for pre-processing and analyzing web server logs. The proposed solution uses clustering and outlier detection techniques to detect attacks in an unsupervised way
