    Children and adolescents in front of screens: a paradigm shift in the relationship and mediation model

    This paper reviews the major theories and research that analyze the relationship between children and screens. In addition, the agents which act as mediators that help children in the interpretation of the messages are considered. As a conclusion, it is observed that the new forms of multiscreen access used by children and adolescents have developed new consumption styles and that information and communication technologies (ICT) have resulted in new styles of interpersonal and group relationships. The impact of the multiscreen society should be analyzed in light of the role played by different mediators and by educommunication. Este artículo revisa las principales teorías e investigaciones que analizan la relación entre los niños y las pantallas. Además, se consideran los agentes que actúan como mediadores que ayudan a los niños en la interpretación de los mensajes. Como conclusión, se observa que las nuevas formas de acceso multipantalla utilizadas por niños y adolescentes han desarrollado nuevos estilos de consumo y que las tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TIC) han dado lugar a nuevos estilos de relaciones interpersonales y grupales.     Unmet goals of tracking: within-track heterogeneity of students' expectations for

    Educational systems are often characterized by some form(s) of ability grouping, like tracking. Although substantial variation in the implementation of these practices exists, it is always the aim to improve teaching efficiency by creating homogeneous groups of students in terms of capabilities and performances as well as expected pathways. If students’ expected pathways (university, graduate school, or working) are in line with the goals of tracking, one might presume that these expectations are rather homogeneous within tracks and heterogeneous between tracks. In Flanders (the northern region of Belgium), the educational system consists of four tracks. Many students start out in the most prestigious, academic track. If they fail to gain the necessary credentials, they move to the less esteemed technical and vocational tracks. Therefore, the educational system has been called a 'cascade system'. We presume that this cascade system creates homogeneous expectations in the academic track, though heterogeneous expectations in the technical and vocational tracks. We use data from the International Study of City Youth (ISCY), gathered during the 2013-2014 school year from 2354 pupils of the tenth grade across 30 secondary schools in the city of Ghent, Flanders. Preliminary results suggest that the technical and vocational tracks show more heterogeneity in student’s expectations than the academic track. If tracking does not fulfill the desired goals in some tracks, tracking practices should be questioned as tracking occurs along social and ethnic lines, causing social inequality

    COMMUNICATION INTERFACE PROXIMITY AND USER ANXIETY: COMPARING DESKTOP, LAPTOP, AND HAND-HELD DEVICES AS MEDIA PLATFORMS FOR EMERGENCY ALERTS

    This study is an experiment investigating the effects of communication interface proximity on college students' anxiety when they receive the alerts about on-campus crimes via e-mails and text messages. It proposes a new dimension for the traditional concept of proximity in journalism and suggests a shift in the emphasis of proximity from audience-to-event to user-to-interface. It draws the theoretical framework from multiple disciplines: human-computer interaction research, the information processing model, media effects research, as well as the psychological research of anxiety. A total of 97 college students in a large mid-Atlantic university participated in this experiment. Communication interface proximity was conceptualized as three different media platforms: desktop computer (stationary), laptop computer (portable), and hand-held device (mobile). The students were assigned to one of the three device groups based on their self-reported computer usage and received four crime alerts per day for two days through one of the devices. They were required to carry a Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM) pictorial scale during the experiment and reply to the alerts as soon as possible using the SAM and felt anxiety scales. They also filled out an online questionnaire at the beginning of the study, at the end of the first day, and at the end of the study, respectively. Subjects who received the crime alerts on hand-held devices reported higher anxiety upon alert receipt than those receiving the alerts on desktop or laptop computers. Anxiety, valence, and arousal reported upon alert receipt for the laptop and desktop groups decreased significantly in early day two, suggesting an "overnight effect" of the crime alerts on these two groups. However, the hand-held group still reported a high level of anxiety upon alert receipt in early day two, suggesting the ubiquitous hand-held device is just under our skin, with no "down time". This study also found that anxiety predicted latency time of response to the alerts and memory for the crime alerts, indicating that anxiety serves as an adaptive heuristic in an emergency and helps people allocate their limited cognitive mental resources, as suggested by the information processing model

    The influence of marketing media on tweens propensity to consume electronic goods.

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2017.Tweens are a different regiment of children who are not reflected as children, but have not technologically advanced into fully autonomous teenagers (Hulan, 2007:31). This target market is viewed as the, “richest generation of children” (Lindstrom, 2004:175). This market has disposable income and the ability to influence purchases which are endorsed, which results in the tween market being acknowledged as a commercial niche market. For an effective marketing campaign, marketing managers need to be mindful of children’s advertising knowledge, as well as the influence and pressure from peer endorsement on purchases which are made. As a result, to define the influence of these variables, a research tool (questionnaire) was given out to respondents involving 390 participants in primary and secondary schools situated in the KwaZulu Natal region, who successfully completed this research instrument. Questionnaires were administered to the tween market during life-orientation class as an exercise in the selected schools. Parent/Guardians consent had to be received before their child was able to participate in the study. Children were also given consent forms to fill in; to make the teacher aware if they wanted to partake in this study. The main aim of this study was to understand the influence marketing media has on tween market consumption, which produces their consumption patterns. Also with the different media channels developing, the marketing teams have to understand how this target market understands and interprets their messages. The key research objective was to define tweens advertising literacy at different stages and their propensity to consume advertising literacy, as well as the degree of parents’ and peers’ influence on their purchasing decisions. Understanding what factors influence the tween market was also looked at to determine their role in purchasing decisions. These factors will assist marketers and professionals when margin structuring marketing and media campaigns aimed at the tween market. Generation Z is defined as the tween market and this was also looked at in detail; it consisted of character, personality and preferences. Their consumption of media and digital media was looked at in detail as it influences marketing campaigns. Data was analyzed using SPSS (Statistics Package for Social Sciences). Findings from the data collection were signified, and compared to the collected works gathered, and an emphasis was on Roedder’s information processing model and Piaget’s Hierarchy of Cognitive development, (Roedder, 1981:145; Piaget, 1960:135). The data gathered was displayed in various chart formats and tables to form an illustration of the results. The results showed there is a sturdy positive association amongst advertising literacy and the different age-groups. Peer influence also has an influence on the tween market purchase decision. It was also established the tween market is inclined to consume endorsed products, which have a high visibility during consumption, then goods with lower consumption conspicuousness. Parental influence also has a strong influence on the tween market and their purchase decisions. Other factors i.e. cultural & social, will also be looked at to gather insights on alternate factors which influence the target audience’s purchasing decisions. From the key gatherings, recommendations and insights were put together for South African managers and marketing professionals. This study report includes recommendations for research and considerations for marketing and media campaigns which will be aimed at tween’s and their purchase patterns. One of the recommendations marketing professional’s states campaigns should consider advertising to the tween market as well, instead of forgetting because they are a niche segment. Empirical findings show children are more naïve consumers and more enthusiastic to buying goods. This makes them an attractive division, as they are eager consumers

    Despite its promised richness, researching past reception has received less attention from scholars than other aspects of media history, such as the retrospective study of media genres, organizations and technologies. This volume aims to contribute to a better knowledge of this neglected field, both by reflecting about theoretical questions and by presenting empirical data. Transformations that occurred throughout the 20th century have to be understood within a history of permanent social re-contextualisation of the media in the changing scenarios of everyday life, where gendered questions make up an important part. The history of media uses and representations also requires scholars to face complex questions about memory, as a mediator in research about the past, but also as an object of study on its own. Memory is a crucial topic, as it calls attention to the processes of meaning-making in which audiences engage through successive acts of re-appropriation of media texts

    Abstract: Lonely Sounds: Popular Recorded Music and American Society, 1949-1979 Lonely Sounds: Popular Recorded Music and American Society, 1949-1979 examines the relationship between the experience of listening to popular music and social disengagement. It finds that technological innovations, the growth of a youth culture, and market forces in the post-World War II era came together to transform the normal musical experience from a social event grounded in live performance into a consumable recorded commodity that satisfied individual desires. The musical turn inward began in the late 1940s. Prior to the postwar era, the popular music experience was communal, rooted in place, and it contained implicit social obligations between the performer and the audience and among members of the audience. Beginning in the late 1940s, technological, social, and cultural innovations, including new radio formats, automobile radios, and an expanding recording industry liberated popular music from some of the restraints of place and time. Listeners in the 1950s acquired expanded opportunities for enjoying music in ways that were more private, mobile, and intensely personal. Not only did the opportunities to listen alone expand enormously, but so also did the inclination. The postwar youth culture that grew up around the Top 40 radio format and 45-rpm singles stood at the vanguard of this revolutionary change in the musical experience. For many young listeners, rock and roll records represented a singular authentic experience. By the middle 1960s, these listeners believed that correctly listening to rock records not only revealed a unique self but also reintegrated alienated individuals into supportive communities. The isolated nature of the listening experience, however, poignantly frustrated such hopes. The dream of social renewal through rock records collapsed in the early 1970s. In its place came a more aggressive emphasis on self-sufficiency and personal control. In the subsequent decade devices such as the Sony Walkman successfully colonized public space, shielding listeners from other sounds while enclosing them in a private sonic environment of their choosing. This revolution in the musical experience, I contend, reflected and contributed to the pervasive sense of loneliness associated with the postwar era

    Characterising the sleep-wake behaviour of adolescents in a sample of South African high school students in Makhanda, Eastern Cape

    Sleep plays a significant role during adolescence. Overall, sleep is essential for growth and development, cognitive function, memory consolidation, concentration, alertness, mental and physical health, as well as the overall quality of life. During adolescence though, sleep-wake behaviour has been shown to undergo drastic changes, progressing from the early ages of 11-13 years through to late adolescence while attending school. During this period, adolescents experience later bedtimes, earlier waketimes, and less than recommended sleep durations, especially on weekdays during the school term. On weekends, however, adolescents tend to further delay their bed and wake times, resulting in discrepancies between week-and-weekend sleep-wake behavior. These changes are driven by a variety of systemic factors, that include biological, psychosocial, school, and behavioural changes that adolescents experience. The interaction of systematic factors has been described as the “Perfect Storm of insufficient and inappropriately-timed sleep” (Carskadon, 2011a; Crowley et al., 2018). While previous research on adolescent sleep has been focused mainly in countries of the Global North, there has been comparatively less research in the Global South, particularly in countries like South Africa, and in out of large city centres like Johannesburg and Cape Town. It is also not known what the impact of certain demographic factors, such as learner sex, boarding/day schooling, and public/private schooling is on sleep-wake habits. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to explore the sleep-wake behaviour of a sample of late adolescents from public and private schools in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape of South Africa and to make comparisons between different groups within. Method: This study is comprised of two phases. Phase one adopted a cross-sectional design to characterise Grade 12 learners' (final year students) sleep-wake behaviour across various public and private schools. This was achieved through the administration of an amended version of the School Sleep Habits Survey (SSHS). The SSHS included questions that capture demographic information, academic performance, sleep duration at different times of the week and also incorporated scales to assess daytime sleepiness, sleep-wake behavior problems, depressive mood, and chronotype. Phase two adopted an observational descriptive design. The sleep-wake behaviour of a sample of Grade 11 learners was tracked for 9 days using the Core Consensus Sleep Diary and Actigraphy. Data were not normally distributed and were thus analysed using non-parametric statistics and all data were displayed as the median and interquartile range (no 1-3). Results: Analysed surveys totalled 231. All participants were Grade 12s (final year of high school), aged between 17-19, from three private schools (n=152) and two public schools (n=79). The sample consisted of students identifying as females (n=94) and males (n=137). Participants self-identified as either Black/African (n=73), White (n=125), Colored (n=32) and as Indian (n=1). Over half of the sample lived in boarding houses/hostels (n=130) and slightly less than half (n=95) were day scholars. For Phase One, the median obtained for self-reported sleep duration on weekdays was 07hrs (06hrs-07hrs:18min) and 08hrs (07hrs-09hrs) on the weekend (p<0.01; z=10). The median for self-reported bedtime on weeknights was 11:00 (10:30-11:30) p.m., while on the weekends, it was an hour later i.e., 12:00 a.m. (11:00 p.m. -12:37 a.m.; p<0.01; z=9.4). Self-reported waketime on weekdays was 06:20 (06:00-06:30) a.m. and it was one-hour forty minutes later on weekends i.e., 08:00 (07:00-09:00) a.m. (p<0.01; z=13). With regards to sex differences on school mornings, females reported waking up 14 minutes later than their male counterparts (p<0.01; z=-3.1). On school mornings, day scholars reported significantly earlier waketimes than boarders (p<0.01; z=8.1). The opposite was found on weekends with day scholars reporting significantly later waketimes than boarders (p<0.01; z=-4.1) while day scholars reported going to bed significantly later than boarders during weekends (p<0.01; z=-2.7). There were noteworthy differences between types of schools with public school learners reporting earlier bed (p<0.01; z=3.9) and wake times (p<0.01; z=10) than private school learners on weekdays. On the weekend, however, public school learners reporting later bed (p=0.01; z=-2.7) and wake times (p<0.01; z=-4.4) than private school learners. Overall, the Grade 12 learners scored 12 (11-15) on the depressed mood scale indicating a trend towards high self-reported depressive symptoms, and 26 (23-30) on the ME scale, which demonstrated that this sample population reflects a preference for neither evenings nor mornings. The majority (75 %; n=174) of the Grade12 learners perceived themselves as getting too little sleep, 59% (n=134) reported waking up at least once during the night and 92% (n=213) reported experiencing varying degrees of daytime sleepiness. There was a relationship between caffeine consumption and usage of electronic devices (EDs) before bedtime and some sleep parameters. Specifically, the frequency of consumption of coffee/tea and soda had a medium and positive correlation with sleep onset latency as well as to the scale of sleep-wake problems. Academic performance was also positively and significantly correlated with self-reported mean weekday waketime and negatively correlated with mean weekend sleep duration as well as Weekend Waketime Delay (WWD). For Phase Two, the median self-reported sleep duration for 14 female boarders recorded in sleep diaries i.e.,07:32 (07:22-07:55) and the total sleep time (TST) recorded by the actigraphy i.e., 07:06 (06:54-07:35) and was less than the recommended sleep duration of 8-10 hours for adolescents and not significantly different (p=0.18; z=1.3). However, median sleep duration on the weekend was significantly longer on both actigraphs (08:16; 07:22-08:40) and sleep diaries (08:24; 07:59-08:51) and not significantly different (p=0.3; z=1.1). Overall, bedtimes, waketimes, and sleep onset latency, for both weekdays and weekends, did not differ significantly between the sleep diary responses and actigraph recordings. Discussion: Adolescents in this cohort, like many around the world report weekday sleep durations that are shorter than the recommended 8-10 hours. This may probably partly be explained by later bedtimes influenced by academic obligations, bedtime autonomy, and screen time as well as early waketimes influenced by school start times as indicated in the reasons given for bedtimes. Insufficient sleep during school nights, in this cohort, likely resulted in an accumulated sleep debt which may explain the extended sleep duration and later waketimes on weekends. Weekday waketimes were probably determined by commuting and school-related demands, specifically, school start times as indicated in the reasons given for waketimes. Thus, the results of this study do, in part, align with the factors outlined in the Perfect Storm model of poorly timed and insufficient sleep in adolescents proposed by Carskadon (2011a). Personal characteristics or contextual factors, such as being a boarder or a day scholar, attending a public or private school as well sex differences, accompanied by lifestyle factors such as the consumption of caffeine and usage of electrical devices may have interacted and influenced bed and wake times, resulting in what has been termed “a Perfect Storm of insufficient and inappropriately-timed sleep” in this cohort. Conclusion: The current study provided new insight into the sleep-wake behaviour of late adolescents in Makhanda, Eastern Cape of South Africa. More research is encouraged in the South African context. This knowledge can be used to implement contextually appropriate sleep hygiene education programs in the school curriculum and on an individual level. Furthermore, the results point to the fact that early school start times, in concert with other lifestyle and personal factors may be contributing to insufficient sleep in this group.     Digital technologies have become an essential part of our lives. In many parts of the world, activities such as socializing, providing health care, leisure and education are entirely or partially relying on the internet. Moreover, the COVID-19 world pandemic has also contributed significantly to our dependency on the on-line world. While the advancement of the internet brings many advantages, there are also disadvantages such as potential loss of privacy and security. While the users enjoy surfing on the web, service providers may collect a variety of information about their users, such as the users’ location, gender, and religion. Moreover, the attackers may try to violate the users’ security, for example, by infecting the users’ devices with malware. In this PhD dissertation, to provide means to protect networking we propose several privacy-preserving protocols. Our protocols empower internet users to get a variety of services, while at the same time ensuring users’ privacy and security in the digital world. In other words, we design our protocols such that the users only share the amount of information with the service providers that is absolutely necessary to gain the service. Moreover, our protocols only add minimal additional time and communication costs, while leveraging cryptographic schemes to ensure users’ privacy and security. The dissertation contains two main themes of protocols: privacy-preserving set operations and privacy-preserving graph queries. These protocols can be applied to a variety of application areas. We delve deeper into three application areas: privacy-preserving technologies for malware protection, protection of remote access, and protecting minors.Digitaaliteknologiasta on tullut oleellinen osa ihmisten elämää. Monissa osissa maailmaa sellaiset toiminnot kuten terveydenhuolto, vapaa-ajan vietto ja opetus ovat osittain tai kokonaan riippuvaisia internetistä. Lisäksi COVID-19 -pandemia on lisännyt ihmisten riippuvuutta tietoverkoista. Vaikkakin internetin kehittyminen on tuonut paljon hyvää, se on tuonut mukanaan myös haasteita yksityisyydelle ja tietoturvalle. Käyttäjien selatessa verkkoa palveluntarjoajat voivat kerätä käyttäjästä monenlaista tietoa, kuten esimerkiksi käyttäjän sijainnin, sukupuolen ja uskonnon. Lisäksi hyökkääjät voivat yrittää murtaa käyttäjän tietoturvan esimerkiksi asentamalla hänen koneelleen haittaohjelmia. Tässä väitöskirjassa esitellään useita turvallisuutta suojaavia protokollia tietoverkossa tapahtuvan toiminnan turvaamiseen. Nämä protokollat mahdollistavat internetin käytön monilla tavoilla samalla kun ne turvaavat käyttäjän yksityisyyden ja tietoturvan digitaalisessa maailmassa. Toisin sanoen nämä protokollat on suunniteltu siten, että käyttäjät jakavat palveluntarjoajille vain sen tiedon, joka on ehdottoman välttämätöntä palvelun tuottamiseksi. Protokollat käyttävät kryptografisia menetelmiä käyttäjän yksityisyyden sekä tietoturvan varmistamiseksi, ja ne hidastavat kommunikaatiota mahdollisimman vähän. Tämän väitöskirjan sisältämät protokollat voidaan jakaa kahteen eri teemaan: protokollat yksityisyyden suojaaville joukko-operaatioille ja protokollat yksityisyyden suojaaville graafihauille.
