    Performance of XOR Rule for Decentralized Detection of Deterministic Signals in Bivariate Gaussian Noise

    In this paper, we consider the performance of exclusive-OR (XOR) rule in detecting the presence or absence of a deterministic signal in bivariate Gaussian noise. Signals, when present at the two sensors, are assumed unequal, whereas the noise components have identical marginal distribution but are correlated. The sensors send their one-bit quantized data to a fusion center, which then employs the XOR rule to arrive at the final decision. Here we prove that, in the limit as the correlation coefficient r approaches 1, the optimum fusion rule for both parallel and tandem topologies is XOR with identical, alternating partitions (XORAP) of the observations at the sensors. We further quantify the asymptotic decrease of the Bayes error of XORAP towards zero as a constant multiplied by \sqrt 1-r , as r approaches 1. When compared to the asymptotic Bayes error of CLRT, which decreases to zero exponentially fast, as a function of 1/(1-r) , the Bayes error of XORAP decreases to zero much slower

    Thirty Years of Machine Learning: The Road to Pareto-Optimal Wireless Networks

    Future wireless networks have a substantial potential in terms of supporting a broad range of complex compelling applications both in military and civilian fields, where the users are able to enjoy high-rate, low-latency, low-cost and reliable information services. Achieving this ambitious goal requires new radio techniques for adaptive learning and intelligent decision making because of the complex heterogeneous nature of the network structures and wireless services. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have great success in supporting big data analytics, efficient parameter estimation and interactive decision making. Hence, in this article, we review the thirty-year history of ML by elaborating on supervised learning, unsupervised learning, reinforcement learning and deep learning. Furthermore, we investigate their employment in the compelling applications of wireless networks, including heterogeneous networks (HetNets), cognitive radios (CR), Internet of things (IoT), machine to machine networks (M2M), and so on. This article aims for assisting the readers in clarifying the motivation and methodology of the various ML algorithms, so as to invoke them for hitherto unexplored services as well as scenarios of future wireless networks.Comment: 46 pages, 22 fig

    Decision-Making for Search and Classification using Multiple Autonomous Vehicles over Large-Scale Domains

    This dissertation focuses on real-time decision-making for large-scale domain search and object classification using Multiple Autonomous Vehicles (MAV). In recent years, MAV systems have attracted considerable attention and have been widely utilized. Of particular interest is their application to search and classification under limited sensory capabilities. Since search requires sensor mobility and classification requires a sensor to stay within the vicinity of an object, search and classification are two competing tasks. Therefore, there is a need to develop real-time sensor allocation decision-making strategies to guarantee task accomplishment. These decisions are especially crucial when the domain is much larger than the field-of-view of a sensor, or when the number of objects to be found and classified is much larger than that of available sensors. In this work, the search problem is formulated as a coverage control problem, which aims at collecting enough data at every point within the domain to construct an awareness map. The object classification problem seeks to satisfactorily categorize the property of each found object of interest. The decision-making strategies include both sensor allocation decisions and vehicle motion control. The awareness-, Bayesian-, and risk-based decision-making strategies are developed in sequence. The awareness-based approach is developed under a deterministic framework, while the latter two are developed under a probabilistic framework where uncertainty in sensor measurement is taken into account. The risk-based decision-making strategy also analyzes the effect of measurement cost. It is further extended to an integrated detection and estimation problem with applications in optimal sensor management. Simulation-based studies are performed to confirm the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms

    MAC-PHY Frameworks For LTE And WiFi Networks\u27 Coexistence Over The Unlicensed Band

    The main focus of this dissertation is to address these issues and to analyze the interactions between LTE and WiFi coexisting on the unlicensed spectrum. This can be done by providing some improvements in the first two communication layers in both technologies. Regarding the physical (PHY) layer, efficient spectrum sensing and data fusion techniques that consider correlated spectrum sensing readings at the LTE/WiFi users (sensors) are needed. Failure to consider such correlation has been a major shortcoming of the literature. This resulted in poorly performing spectrum sensing systems if such correlation is not considered in correlated-measurements environments

    Bathtub-Shaped Failure Rate of Sensors for Distributed Detection and Fusion

    We study distributed detection and fusion in sensor networks with bathtub-shaped failure (BSF) rate of the sensors which may or not send data to the Fusion Center (FC). The reliability of semiconductor devices is usually represented by the failure rate curve (called the “bathtub curve”), which can be divided into the three following regions: initial failure period, random failure period, and wear-out failure period. Considering the possibility of the failed sensors which still work but in a bad situation, it is unreasonable to trust the data from these sensors. Based on the above situation, we bring in new characteristics to failed sensors. Each sensor quantizes its local observation into one bit of information which is sent to the FC for overall fusion because of power, communication, and bandwidth constraints. Under this sensor failure model, the Extension Log-likelihood Ratio Test (ELRT) rule is derived. Finally, the ROC curve for this model is presented. The simulation results show that the ELRT rule improves the robust performance of the system, compared with the traditional fusion rule without considering sensor failures

    Traffic characterization in a communications channel for monitoring and control in real-time systems

    The response time for remote monitoring and control in real-time systems is a sensitive issue in device interconnection elements. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the traffic of the communication system in pre-established time windows. In this paper, a methodology based on computational intelligence is proposed for identifying the availability of a data channel and the variables or characteristics that affect the performance and data transfer, which is made up of four stages: a) integration of a communication system with an acquisition module and a final control structure; b) communication channel characterization by means of traffic variables; and c) relevance analysis from the characterization space using SFFS (sequential forward oating selection); d) Channel congestion classification as Low or High using a classifier based on Naive Bayes algorithm. The experimental setup emulates a real process using an on/off remote control of a DC motor on an Ethernet network. The communication time between the client and server was integrated with the operation and control times, to study the whole response time. This proposed approach allows support decisions about channel availability, to establish predictions about the length of the time window when the availability conditions are unknown
