Ankara : The Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering and The Institute of Engineering and Science of Bilkent Univ., 2000.Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 2000.Includes bibliographical references leaves 63-68This thesis addresses the problem of fault detection and isolation in linear systems based on unknown input observers. Functional disturbance decoupled observers which estimate specified or unspecified linear functions of system states regardless of the disturbances are first studied. Necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such observers are presented. The investigation is extended to simultaneous disturbance decoupled observers where multiple systems are observed by a single disturbance decoupled observer. The application of disturbance decoupled observers to fault detection and diagnosis are explicitly outlined, and a new scheme that is based on simultaneous unknown input observers is proposed to enhance the already existing schemes. Finally, a detailed simulation example is carried out to examine the utility of the proposed scheme.Ammar, NejibM.S

LMI-Based Reset Unknown Input Observer for State Estimation of Linear Uncertain Systems

This paper proposes a novel kind of Unknown Input Observer (UIO) called Reset Unknown Input Observer (R-UIO) for state estimation of linear systems in the presence of disturbance using Linear Matrix Inequality (LMI) techniques. In R-UIO, the states of the observer are reset to the after-reset value based on an appropriate reset law in order to decrease the L2L_2 norm and settling time of estimation error. It is shown that the application of the reset theory to the UIOs in the LTI framework can significantly improve the transient response of the observer. Moreover, the devised approach can be applied to both SISO and MIMO systems. Furthermore, the stability and convergence analysis of the devised R-UIO is addressed. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed method is demonstrated by simulation results

Design of reduced-order state/unknown input observers: a descriptor system approach

This paper addresses the problem of estimating simultaneously a linear function of both the state and unknown input of linear system with unknown inputs. By adopting the descriptor system approach, the problem can be conveniently solved. Observers proposed in this paper are of low-order and do not include the derivatives of the outputs. New conditions for the existence of reduced-order observers are derived. A design procedure for the determination of the observer parameters can also be easily derived based on the derived existence conditions <br /
