    Semantic multimedia remote display for mobile thin clients

    Current remote display technologies for mobile thin clients convert practically all types of graphical content into sequences of images rendered by the client. Consequently, important information concerning the content semantics is lost. The present paper goes beyond this bottleneck by developing a semantic multimedia remote display. The principle consists of representing the graphical content as a real-time interactive multimedia scene graph. The underlying architecture features novel components for scene-graph creation and management, as well as for user interactivity handling. The experimental setup considers the Linux X windows system and BiFS/LASeR multimedia scene technologies on the server and client sides, respectively. The implemented solution was benchmarked against currently deployed solutions (VNC and Microsoft-RDP), by considering text editing and WWW browsing applications. The quantitative assessments demonstrate: (1) visual quality expressed by seven objective metrics, e.g., PSNR values between 30 and 42 dB or SSIM values larger than 0.9999; (2) downlink bandwidth gain factors ranging from 2 to 60; (3) real-time user event management expressed by network round-trip time reduction by factors of 4-6 and by uplink bandwidth gain factors from 3 to 10; (4) feasible CPU activity, larger than in the RDP case but reduced by a factor of 1.5 with respect to the VNC-HEXTILE

    Collaborative, distributed and scalable platform based on mobile, cloud, micro services and containers for intensive computing tasks

    Compute-heavy workloads are traditionally run on x86-based HPC platforms and Intel, AMD or Nvidia GPUs; these require a high initial capital expense and ongoing maintenance costs. ARM-based mobile devicesoffer a rad-ically different paradigm with substantially lower capital and maintenance costs and higher gains in performance and efficiency in recent years. When compared to their x-86 brethren, they have become ubiquitous in consumer markets and are making steady gains in the server market. Given this shifting computer paradigm, it is conceivable that a cost- and power-efficient solution for our world’s data processing would include those very same ARM-based mobile devices while they are idling. Given that context, we developed and deployed an auto-scalable, distributed and redundant platform on the basis of a cloud-based service managed via container orchestration and microservices that are in charge of recycling and optimizing these idle resources. We tested the platform performing distributed video compression.     Service Migration from Cloud to Multi-tier Fog Nodes for Multimedia Dissemination with QoE Support.

    A wide range of multimedia services is expected to be offered for mobile users via various wireless access networks. Even the integration of Cloud Computing in such networks does not support an adequate Quality of Experience (QoE) in areas with high demands for multimedia contents. Fog computing has been conceptualized to facilitate the deployment of new services that cloud computing cannot provide, particularly those demanding QoE guarantees. These services are provided using fog nodes located at the network edge, which is capable of virtualizing their functions/applications. Service migration from the cloud to fog nodes can be actuated by request patterns and the timing issues. To the best of our knowledge, existing works on fog computing focus on architecture and fog node deployment issues. In this article, we describe the operational impacts and benefits associated with service migration from the cloud to multi-tier fog computing for video distribution with QoE support. Besides that, we perform the evaluation of such service migration of video services. Finally, we present potential research challenges and trends

    Proactive multi-tenant cache management for virtualized ISP networks

    The content delivery market has mainly been dominated by large Content Delivery Networks (CDNs) such as Akamai and Limelight. However, CDN traffic exerts a lot of pressure on Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks. Recently, ISPs have begun deploying so-called Telco CDNs, which have many advantages, such as reduced ISP network bandwidth utilization and improved Quality of Service (QoS) by bringing content closer to the end-user. Virtualization of storage and networking resources can enable the ISP to simultaneously lease its Telco CDN infrastructure to multiple third parties, opening up new business models and revenue streams. In this paper, we propose a proactive cache management system for ISP-operated multi-tenant Telco CDNs. The associated algorithm optimizes content placement and server selection across tenants and users, based on predicted content popularity and the geographical distribution of requests. Based on a Video-on-Demand (VoD) request trace of a leading European telecom operator, the presented algorithm is shown to reduce bandwidth usage by 17% compared to the traditional Least Recently Used (LRU) caching strategy, both inside the network and on the ingress links, while at the same time offering enhanced load balancing capabilities. Increasing the prediction accuracy is shown to have the potential to further improve bandwidth efficiency by up to 79%

    The CASPER user-centric approach for advanced service provisioning in mobile networks

    Abstract This paper presents an overview of the project CASPER, 1 a 4-year Marie Curie Research and Innovation Staff Exchange (RISE) project running between 2016 and 2020, describing its objectives, approach, architecture, tools and key achievements. CASPER combines academic and industrial forces towards leveraging the expected benefits of Quality of Experience (QoE) exploitation in future networks. In order to achieve that, a QoE orchestrator has been proposed which implements the basic functionalities of QoE monitoring, estimation and management. With means of simulation and testbed emulation, CASPER has managed to develop a proprietary SDN Controller, which implements QoE-based traffic rerouting for the challenging scenario of HTTP adaptive video streaming, leading to more stable and higher QoE scores compared to a state-of-the-art SDN Controller implementation
