Autonomous Algorithms for Centralized and Distributed Interference Coordination: A Virtual Layer Based Approach
Interference mitigation techniques are essential for improving the
performance of interference limited wireless networks. In this paper, we
introduce novel interference mitigation schemes for wireless cellular networks
with space division multiple access (SDMA). The schemes are based on a virtual
layer that captures and simplifies the complicated interference situation in
the network and that is used for power control. We show how optimization in
this virtual layer generates gradually adapting power control settings that
lead to autonomous interference minimization. Thereby, the granularity of
control ranges from controlling frequency sub-band power via controlling the
power on a per-beam basis, to a granularity of only enforcing average power
constraints per beam. In conjunction with suitable short-term scheduling, our
algorithms gradually steer the network towards a higher utility. We use
extensive system-level simulations to compare three distributed algorithms and
evaluate their applicability for different user mobility assumptions. In
particular, it turns out that larger gains can be achieved by imposing average
power constraints and allowing opportunistic scheduling instantaneously, rather
than controlling the power in a strict way. Furthermore, we introduce a
centralized algorithm, which directly solves the underlying optimization and
shows fast convergence, as a performance benchmark for the distributed

Survey of Spectrum Sharing for Inter-Technology Coexistence
Increasing capacity demands in emerging wireless technologies are expected to
be met by network densification and spectrum bands open to multiple
technologies. These will, in turn, increase the level of interference and also
result in more complex inter-technology interactions, which will need to be
managed through spectrum sharing mechanisms. Consequently, novel spectrum
sharing mechanisms should be designed to allow spectrum access for multiple
technologies, while efficiently utilizing the spectrum resources overall.
Importantly, it is not trivial to design such efficient mechanisms, not only
due to technical aspects, but also due to regulatory and business model
constraints. In this survey we address spectrum sharing mechanisms for wireless
inter-technology coexistence by means of a technology circle that incorporates
in a unified, system-level view the technical and non-technical aspects. We
thus systematically explore the spectrum sharing design space consisting of
parameters at different layers. Using this framework, we present a literature
review on inter-technology coexistence with a focus on wireless technologies
with equal spectrum access rights, i.e. (i) primary/primary, (ii)
secondary/secondary, and (iii) technologies operating in a spectrum commons.
Moreover, we reflect on our literature review to identify possible spectrum
sharing design solutions and performance evaluation approaches useful for
future coexistence cases. Finally, we discuss spectrum sharing design
challenges and suggest future research directions
Plug-and-Play Decentralized Model Predictive Control
In this paper we consider a linear system structured into physically coupled
subsystems and propose a decentralized control scheme capable to guarantee
asymptotic stability and satisfaction of constraints on system inputs and
states. The design procedure is totally decentralized, since the synthesis of a
local controller uses only information on a subsystem and its neighbors, i.e.
subsystems coupled to it. We first derive tests for checking if a subsystem can
be plugged into (or unplugged from) an existing plant without spoiling overall
stability and constraint satisfaction. When this is possible, we show how to
automatize the design of local controllers so that it can be carried out in
parallel by smart actuators equipped with computational resources and capable
to exchange information with neighboring subsystems. In particular, local
controllers exploit tube-based Model Predictive Control (MPC) in order to
guarantee robustness with respect to physical coupling among subsystems.
Finally, an application of the proposed control design procedure to frequency

Cost Efficient Distributed Load Frequency Control in Power Systems
The introduction of new technologies and increased penetration of renewable resources is altering the power distribution landscape which now includes a larger numbers of micro-generators. The centralized strategies currently employed for performing frequency control in a cost efficient way need to be revisited and decentralized to conform with the increase of distributed generation in the grid. In this paper, the use of Multi-Agent and Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning techniques to train models to perform cost efficient frequency control through decentralized decision making is proposed. More specifically, we cast the frequency control problem as a Markov Decision Process and propose the use of reward composition and action composition multi-objective techniques and compare the results between the two. Reward composition is achieved by increasing the dimensionality of the reward function, while action composition is achieved through linear combination of actions produced by multiple single objective models. The proposed framework is validated through comparing the observed dynamics with the acceptable limits enforced in the industry and the cost optimal setups
Analysis of the effect of clock drifts on frequency regulation and power sharing in inverter-based islanded microgrids

This paper analyses the effect that local clock drifts have in the parallel operation of voltage source inverters (VSIs) in islanded microgrids (MG). The state-of-the-art control policies for frequency regulation and active power sharing in VSIs-based MGs are reviewed and selected prototype policies are then re-formulated in terms of clock drifts. Next, steady-state properties for these policies are analyzed. For each of the policies, analytical expressions are developed to provide an exact quantification of the impact that drifts have on frequency and active power equilibrium points. In addition, a closed-loop model that accommodates all the policies is derived, and the stability of the equilibrium points is characterized in terms of the clock drifts. Finally, the implementation of the analyzed policies in a laboratory MG provides experimental results that confirm the theoretical analysis.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Control limitations from distributed sensing: theory and Extremely Large Telescope application
We investigate performance bounds for feedback control of distributed plants
where the controller can be centralized (i.e. it has access to measurements
from the whole plant), but sensors only measure differences between neighboring
subsystem outputs. Such "distributed sensing" can be a technological necessity
in applications where system size exceeds accuracy requirements by many orders
of magnitude. We formulate how distributed sensing generally limits feedback
performance robust to measurement noise and to model uncertainty, without
assuming any controller restrictions (among others, no "distributed control"
restriction). A major practical consequence is the necessity to cut down
integral action on some modes. We particularize the results to spatially
invariant systems and finally illustrate implications of our developments for
stabilizing the segmented primary mirror of the European Extremely Large

Plug-and-Play Model Predictive Control based on robust control invariant sets
In this paper we consider a linear system represented by a coupling graph
between subsystems and propose a distributed control scheme capable to
guarantee asymptotic stability and satisfaction of constraints on system inputs
and states. Most importantly, as in Riverso et al., 2012 our design procedure
enables plug-and-play (PnP) operations, meaning that (i) the addition or
removal of subsystems triggers the design of local controllers associated to
successors to the subsystem only and (ii) the synthesis of a local controller
for a subsystem requires information only from predecessors of the subsystem
and it can be performed using only local computational resources. Our method
hinges on local tube MPC controllers based on robust control invariant sets and
it advances the PnP design procedure proposed in Riverso et al., 2012 in
several directions. Quite notably, using recent results in the computation of
robust control invariant sets, we show how critical steps in the design of a
local controller can be solved through linear programming. Finally, an
application of the proposed control design procedure to frequency control in
power networks is presented
