    Distributed Detection and Estimation in Wireless Sensor Networks

    In this article we consider the problems of distributed detection and estimation in wireless sensor networks. In the first part, we provide a general framework aimed to show how an efficient design of a sensor network requires a joint organization of in-network processing and communication. Then, we recall the basic features of consensus algorithm, which is a basic tool to reach globally optimal decisions through a distributed approach. The main part of the paper starts addressing the distributed estimation problem. We show first an entirely decentralized approach, where observations and estimations are performed without the intervention of a fusion center. Then, we consider the case where the estimation is performed at a fusion center, showing how to allocate quantization bits and transmit powers in the links between the nodes and the fusion center, in order to accommodate the requirement on the maximum estimation variance, under a constraint on the global transmit power. We extend the approach to the detection problem. Also in this case, we consider the distributed approach, where every node can achieve a globally optimal decision, and the case where the decision is taken at a central node. In the latter case, we show how to allocate coding bits and transmit power in order to maximize the detection probability, under constraints on the false alarm rate and the global transmit power. Then, we generalize consensus algorithms illustrating a distributed procedure that converges to the projection of the observation vector onto a signal subspace. We then address the issue of energy consumption in sensor networks, thus showing how to optimize the network topology in order to minimize the energy necessary to achieve a global consensus. Finally, we address the problem of matching the topology of the network to the graph describing the statistical dependencies among the observed variables.Comment: 92 pages, 24 figures.     A scheme for robust distributed sensor fusion based on average consensus

    We consider a network of distributed sensors, where each sensor takes a linear measurement of some unknown parameters, corrupted by independent Gaussian noises. We propose a simple distributed iterative scheme, based on distributed average consensus in the network, to compute the maximum-likelihood estimate of the parameters. This scheme doesn't involve explicit point-to-point message passing or routing; instead, it diffuses information across the network by updating each node's data with a weighted average of its neighbors' data (they maintain the same data structure). At each step, every node can compute a local weighted least-squares estimate, which converges to the global maximum-likelihood solution. This scheme is robust to unreliable communication links. We show that it works in a network with dynamically changing topology, provided that the infinitely occurring communication graphs are jointly connected

    Gossip Algorithms for Distributed Signal Processing

    Gossip algorithms are attractive for in-network processing in sensor networks because they do not require any specialized routing, there is no bottleneck or single point of failure, and they are robust to unreliable wireless network conditions. Recently, there has been a surge of activity in the computer science, control, signal processing, and information theory communities, developing faster and more robust gossip algorithms and deriving theoretical performance guarantees. This article presents an overview of recent work in the area. We describe convergence rate results, which are related to the number of transmitted messages and thus the amount of energy consumed in the network for gossiping. We discuss issues related to gossiping over wireless links, including the effects of quantization and noise, and we illustrate the use of gossip algorithms for canonical signal processing tasks including distributed estimation, source localization, and compression.Comment: Submitted to Proceedings of the IEEE, 29 page

    Compressive Privacy for a Linear Dynamical System

    We consider a linear dynamical system in which the state vector consists of both public and private states. One or more sensors make measurements of the state vector and sends information to a fusion center, which performs the final state estimation. To achieve an optimal tradeoff between the utility of estimating the public states and protection of the private states, the measurements at each time step are linearly compressed into a lower dimensional space. Under the centralized setting where all measurements are collected by a single sensor, we propose an optimization problem and an algorithm to find the best compression matrix. Under the decentralized setting where measurements are made separately at multiple sensors, each sensor optimizes its own local compression matrix. We propose methods to separate the overall optimization problem into multiple sub-problems that can be solved locally at each sensor. We consider the cases where there is no message exchange between the sensors; and where each sensor takes turns to transmit messages to the other sensors. Simulations and empirical experiments demonstrate the efficiency of our proposed approach in allowing the fusion center to estimate the public states with good accuracy while preventing it from estimating the private states accurately

    Distributed signal processing and optimization based on in-network subspace projections

    We study distributed optimization and processing of subspace-constrained signals in multi-agent networks with sparse connectivity. We introduce the first optimization framework based on distributed subspace projections, aimed at minimizing a network cost function depending on the specific processing task, while imposing subspace constraints on the final solution. The proposed method hinges on (sub)gradient optimization techniques while leveraging distributed projections as a mechanism to enforce subspace constraints in a cooperative and distributed fashion. Asymptotic convergence rates to optimal solutions of the problem are established under different assumptions (e.g., nondifferentiability, nonconvexity, etc.) on the objective function. We also introduce an extension of the framework that works with constant step-sizes, thus enabling faster convergence to optimal solutions of the optimization problem. Our algorithmic framework is very flexible and can be customized to a variety of problems in distributed signal processing. Finally, numerical tests on synthetic and realistic data illustrate how the proposed methods compare favorably to existing distributed algorithms

This dissertation focuses on localization of people in wireless sensor networks using radio frequency (RF) signals, speci cally received signal strength (RSS) measurements. A static sensor network can make RSS measurements of the signal from a transmitting badge that a person wears in order to locate the badge. We call this kind of localization method radio device localization. Since the human body causes RSS changes between pairwise sensor nodes of a static network, we can also use RSS measurements from pairwise nodes of a network to locate people, even if they are not carrying any radio device. We call this device-free localization (DFL). The rst contribution of this dissertation is to radio device localization.     Identifying High-Traffic Patterns in the Workplace With Radio Tomographic Imaging in 3D Wireless Sensor Networks

    The rapid progress of wireless communication and embedded mircro-sensing electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) technologies has resulted in a growing confidence in the use of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) comprised of low-cost, low-power devices performing various monitoring tasks. Radio Tomographic Imaging (RTI) is a technology for localizing, tracking, and imaging device-free objects in a WSN using the change in received signal strength (RSS) of the radio links the object is obstructing. This thesis employs an experimental indoor three-dimensional (3-D) RTI network constructed of 80 wireless radios in a 100 square foot area. Experimental results are presented from a series of stationary target localization and target tracking experiments using one and two targets. Preliminary results demonstrate a 3-D RTI network can be effectively used to generate 3-D RSS-based images to extract target features such as size and height, and identify high-traffic patterns in the workplace by tracking asset movement
