Advanced Message Routing for Scalable Distributed Simulations
The Joint Forces Command (JFCOM) Experimentation Directorate (J9)'s recent Joint Urban Operations (JUO)
experiments have demonstrated the viability of Forces Modeling and Simulation in a distributed environment. The
JSAF application suite, combined with the RTI-s communications system, provides the ability to run distributed
simulations with sites located across the United States, from Norfolk, Virginia to Maui, Hawaii. Interest-aware
routers are essential for communications in the large, distributed environments, and the current RTI-s framework
provides such routers connected in a straightforward tree topology. This approach is successful for small to medium
sized simulations, but faces a number of significant limitations for very large simulations over high-latency, wide
area networks. In particular, traffic is forced through a single site, drastically increasing distances messages must
travel to sites not near the top of the tree. Aggregate bandwidth is limited to the bandwidth of the site hosting the
top router, and failures in the upper levels of the router tree can result in widespread communications losses
throughout the system.
To resolve these issues, this work extends the RTI-s software router infrastructure to accommodate more
sophisticated, general router topologies, including both the existing tree framework and a new generalization of the
fully connected mesh topologies used in the SF Express ModSAF simulations of 100K fully interacting vehicles.
The new software router objects incorporate the scalable features of the SF Express design, while optionally using
low-level RTI-s objects to perform actual site-to-site communications. The (substantial) limitations of the original
mesh router formalism have been eliminated, allowing fully dynamic operations. The mesh topology capabilities
allow aggregate bandwidth and site-to-site latencies to match actual network performance. The heavy resource load at
the root node can now be distributed across routers at the participating sites
The GalMer database: Galaxy Mergers in the Virtual Observatory
We present the GalMer database, a library of galaxy merger simulations, made
available to users through tools compatible with the Virtual Observatory (VO)
standards adapted specially for this theoretical database. To investigate the
physics of galaxy formation through hierarchical merging, it is necessary to
simulate galaxy interactions varying a large number of parameters:
morphological types, mass ratios, orbital configurations, etc. On one side,
these simulations have to be run in a cosmological context, able to provide a
large number of galaxy pairs, with boundary conditions given by the large-scale
simulations, on the other side the resolution has to be high enough at galaxy
scales, to provide realistic physics. The GalMer database is a library of
thousands simulations of galaxy mergers at moderate spatial resolution and it
is a compromise between the diversity of initial conditions and the details of
underlying physics. We provide all coordinates and data of simulated particles
in FITS binary tables. The main advantages of the database are VO access
interfaces and value-added services which allow users to compare the results of
the simulations directly to observations: stellar population modelling, dust
extinction, spectra, images, visualisation using dedicated VO tools. The GalMer
value-added services can be used as virtual telescope producing broadband
images, 1D spectra, 3D spectral datacubes, thus making our database oriented
towards the usage by observers. We present several examples of the GalMer
database scientific usage obtained from the analysis of simulations and
modelling their stellar population properties, including: (1) studies of the
star formation efficiency in interactions; (2) creation of old counter-rotating
components; (3) reshaping metallicity profiles in elliptical galaxies; (4)
orbital to internal angular momentum transfer; (5) reproducing observed colour

Shape: A 3D Modeling Tool for Astrophysics
We present a flexible interactive 3D morpho-kinematical modeling application
for astrophysics. Compared to other systems, our application reduces the
restrictions on the physical assumptions, data type and amount that is required
for a reconstruction of an object's morphology. It is one of the first publicly
available tools to apply interactive graphics to astrophysical modeling. The
tool allows astrophysicists to provide a-priori knowledge about the object by
interactively defining 3D structural elements. By direct comparison of model
prediction with observational data, model parameters can then be automatically
optimized to fit the observation. The tool has already been successfully used

21st Century Simulation: Exploiting High Performance Computing and Data Analysis
This paper identifies, defines, and analyzes the limitations imposed on Modeling and Simulation by outmoded
paradigms in computer utilization and data analysis. The authors then discuss two emerging capabilities to
overcome these limitations: High Performance Parallel Computing and Advanced Data Analysis. First, parallel
computing, in supercomputers and Linux clusters, has proven effective by providing users an advantage in
computing power. This has been characterized as a ten-year lead over the use of single-processor computers.
Second, advanced data analysis techniques are both necessitated and enabled by this leap in computing power.
JFCOM's JESPP project is one of the few simulation initiatives to effectively embrace these concepts. The
challenges facing the defense analyst today have grown to include the need to consider operations among non-combatant
populations, to focus on impacts to civilian infrastructure, to differentiate combatants from non-combatants,
and to understand non-linear, asymmetric warfare. These requirements stretch both current
computational techniques and data analysis methodologies. In this paper, documented examples and potential
solutions will be advanced. The authors discuss the paths to successful implementation based on their experience.
Reviewed technologies include parallel computing, cluster computing, grid computing, data logging, OpsResearch,
database advances, data mining, evolutionary computing, genetic algorithms, and Monte Carlo sensitivity analyses.
The modeling and simulation community has significant potential to provide more opportunities for training and
analysis. Simulations must include increasingly sophisticated environments, better emulations of foes, and more
realistic civilian populations. Overcoming the implementation challenges will produce dramatically better insights,
for trainees and analysts. High Performance Parallel Computing and Advanced Data Analysis promise increased
understanding of future vulnerabilities to help avoid unneeded mission failures and unacceptable personnel losses.
The authors set forth road maps for rapid prototyping and adoption of advanced capabilities. They discuss the
beneficial impact of embracing these technologies, as well as risk mitigation required to ensure success
Interactive real-time physics: an intuitive approach to form-finding and structural analysis for design and education
Real-time physics simulation has been extensively used in computer games, but its potential has yet to be fully realised in design and education. We present an interactive 3D physics engine with a wide variety of applications. In common with traditional FEM, the use of a local element stiffness matrix is retained. However, unlike typical non-linear FEM routines, elements forces, moments and inertia are appropriately lumped at nodes following the Dynamic Relaxation Method. A semi-implicit time integration scheme updates linear and angular momentum, and subsequently the local coordinate frames of the nodes. The Co-Rotational formulation is used to compute the resultant field of displacements in global coordinates including large deformations. The results obtained compare well against established commercial software. We demonstrate that the method presented allows the making of interactive structural models that can be used in teaching to develop an intuitive understanding of structural behaviour. We also show that the same interactive physics framework allows real-time optimization that can be used for geometric and structural design application
HoME: a Household Multimodal Environment
We introduce HoME: a Household Multimodal Environment for artificial agents
to learn from vision, audio, semantics, physics, and interaction with objects
and other agents, all within a realistic context. HoME integrates over 45,000
diverse 3D house layouts based on the SUNCG dataset, a scale which may
facilitate learning, generalization, and transfer. HoME is an open-source,
OpenAI Gym-compatible platform extensible to tasks in reinforcement learning,
language grounding, sound-based navigation, robotics, multi-agent learning, and
more. We hope HoME better enables artificial agents to learn as humans do: in
