The organization and management of the Virtual Astronomical Observatory
The U.S. Virtual Astronomical Observatory (VAO; http://www.us-vao.org/) has
been in operation since May 2010. Its goal is to enable new science through
efficient integration of distributed multi-wavelength data. This paper
describes the management and organization of the VAO, and emphasizes the
techniques used to ensure efficiency in a distributed organization. Management
methods include using an annual program plan as the basis for establishing
contracts with member organizations, regular communication, and monitoring of
processes.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures. SPIE Conference 8449: Modeling, Systems

Redesigning work organizations and technologies: experiences from European projects
Currently distributed business process (re) design (resulting in components of business networks) basically relies on technical criteria. And that are the main purposes of most research projects supported by EC. Through the process of building a European Research Area, this means a strong influence in the national research programmes. However it is generally accepted that it should also take into account social criteria and aspects such as the quality of working life, or participation in decision processes. Those were some of the objectives of projects in de 80s decade, and framed some of the main concepts and scientific approaches to work organisation. The democratic participation of network and organisations members in the design process is a critical success factor. This is not accepted by everyone, but is based in sufficient case studies. Nevertheless, in order to achieve an optimization that can satisfying the requirements of agility of a network of enterprises, more complex design methods must be developed. Thus, the support to the collaborative design of distributed work in a network of enterprises, through a concurrent approaching business processes, work organisation and task content is a key factor to achieve such purposes. Increasing needs in terms of amounts of information, agility, and support for collaboration without time and space constrains, imposes the use of a computer-based model.business process; networks; decision processes; collaborative design;
Collaboration and Virtualization in Large Information Systems Projects
A project is evolving through different phases from idea and conception until the experiments, implementation and maintenance. The globalization, the Internet, the Web and the mobile computing changed many human activities, and in this respect, the realization of the Information System (IS) projects. The projects are growing, the teams are geographically distributed, and the users are heterogeneous. In this respect, the realization of the large Information Technology (IT) projects needs to use collaborative technologies. The distribution of the team, the users' heterogeneity and the project complexity determines the virtualization. This paper is an overview of these aspects for large IT projects. It shortly present a general framework developed by the authors for collaborative systems in general and adapted to collaborative project management. The general considerations are illustrated on the case of a large IT project in which the authors were involved.large IT projects, collaborative systems, virtualization, framework for collaborative virtual systems
Specification of vertical semantic consistency rules of UML class diagram refinement using logical approach
Unified Modelling Language (UML) is the most popular modelling language use for
software design in software development industries with a class diagram being the
most frequently use diagram. Despite the popularity of UML, it is being affected by
inconsistency problems of its diagrams at the same or different abstraction levels.
Inconsistency in UML is mostly caused by existence of various views on the same
system and sometimes leads to potentially conflicting system specifications. In
general, syntactic consistency can be automatically checked and therefore is
supported by current UML Computer-aided Software Engineering (CASE) tools.
Semantic consistency problems, unlike syntactic consistency problems, there exists
no specific method for specifying semantic consistency rules and constraints.
Therefore, this research has specified twenty-four abstraction rules of classâs relation
semantic among any three related classes of a refined class diagram to semantically
equivalent relations of two of the classes using a logical approach. This research has
also formalized three vertical semantic consistency rules of a class diagram
refinement identified by previous researchers using a logical approach and a set of
formalized abstraction rules. The results were successfully evaluated using hotel
management system and passenger list system case studies and were found to be
reliable and efficient
