From 19.11.2006 to 22.11.2006, the Dagstuhl Seminar 06472 ``XQuery Implementation Paradigms'' was held in the International Conference and Research Center (IBFI), Schloss Dagstuhl. During the seminar, several participants presented their current research, and ongoing work and open problems were discussed. Abstracts of the presentations given during the seminar as well as abstracts of seminar results and ideas are put together in this paper. Constraint-based Query Distribution Framework for an Integrated Global Schema
Distributed heterogeneous data sources need to be queried uniformly using
global schema. Query on global schema is reformulated so that it can be
executed on local data sources. Constraints in global schema and mappings are
used for source selection, query optimization,and querying partitioned and
replicated data sources. The provided system is all XML-based which poses query
in XML form, transforms, and integrates local results in an XML document.
Contributions include the use of constraints in our existing global schema
which help in source selection and query optimization, and a global query

Query management in a sensor environment
Traditional sensor network deployments consisted of fixed infrastructures and were relatively small in size. More and more, we see the deployment of ad-hoc sensor networks with heterogeneous devices on a larger scale, posing new challenges for device management and query processing. In this paper, we present our design and prototype implementation of XSense, an architecture supporting metadata and query services for an underlying large scale dynamic P2P sensor network. We cluster sensor devices into manageable groupings to optimise the query process and automatically locate appropriate clusters based on keyword abstraction from queries. We present experimental analysis to show the benefits of our approach and demonstrate improved query performance and scalability
A Framework for XML-based Integration of Data, Visualization and Analysis in a Biomedical Domain
Biomedical data are becoming increasingly complex and heterogeneous in nature. The data are stored in distributed information systems, using a variety of data models, and are processed by increasingly more complex tools that analyze and visualize them. We present in this paper our framework for integrating biomedical research data and tools into a unique Web front end. Our framework is applied to the University of Washingtonâs Human Brain Project. SpeciïŹcally, we present solutions to four integration tasks: deïŹnition of complex mappings from relational sources to XML, distributed XQuery processing, generation of heterogeneous output formats, and the integration of heterogeneous data visualization and analysis tools
Semi-automatic semantic enrichment of raw sensor data
One of the more recent sources of large volumes of generated data is sensor devices, where dedicated sensing equipment is used to monitor events and happenings in a wide range of domains, including monitoring human biometrics. In recent trials to examine the effects that key moments in movies have on the human body, we fitted fitted with a number of biometric sensor devices and monitored them as they watched a range of dierent movies in groups. The purpose of these experiments was to examine the correlation between humans' highlights in movies as observed from biometric sensors, and highlights in the same movies as identified by our automatic movie analysis techniques. However,the problem with this type of experiment is that both the analysis of the video stream and the sensor data readings are not directly usable
in their raw form because of the sheer volume of low-level data values generated both from the sensors and from the movie analysis. This work describes the semi-automated enrichment of both video analysis and sensor data and the mechanism used to query the data in both centralised
environments, and in a peer-to-peer architecture when the number of sensor devices grows to large numbers. We present and validate a scalable means of semi-automating the semantic enrichment of sensor data, thereby providing a means of large-scale sensor management

An effective data placement strategy for XML documents
As XML is increasingly being used in Web applications, new
technologies need to be investigated for processing XML documents with high
performance. Parallelism is a promising solution for structured document
processing and data placement is a major factor for system performance
improvement in parallel processing. This paper describes an effective XML
document data placement strategy. The new strategy is based on a multilevel
graph partitioning algorithm with the consideration of the unique features of
XML documents and query distributions. A new algorithm, which is based on
XML query schemas to derive the weighted graph from the labelled directed
graph presentation of XML documents, is also proposed. Performance analysis
on the algorithm presented in the paper shows that the new data placement
strategy exhibits low workload skew and a high degree of parallelism
State-of-the-art on evolution and reactivity
This report starts by, in Chapter 1, outlining aspects of querying and updating resources on
the Web and on the Semantic Web, including the development of query and update languages
to be carried out within the Rewerse project.
From this outline, it becomes clear that several existing research areas and topics are of
interest for this work in Rewerse. In the remainder of this report we further present state of
the art surveys in a selection of such areas and topics. More precisely: in Chapter 2 we give
an overview of logics for reasoning about state change and updates; Chapter 3 is devoted to briefly describing existing update languages for the Web, and also for updating logic programs;
in Chapter 4 event-condition-action rules, both in the context of active database systems and
in the context of semistructured data, are surveyed; in Chapter 5 we give an overview of some relevant rule-based agents frameworks
