    A recommender system for e-retail

    The e-retail sector in South Africa has a significant opportunity to capture a large portion of the country's retail industry. Central to seizing this opportunity is leveraging the advantages that the online setting affords. In particular, the e-retailer can offer an extremely large catalogue of products; far beyond what a traditional retailer is capable of supporting. However, as the catalogue grows, it becomes increasingly difficult for a customer to efficiently discover desirable products. As a consequence, it is important for the e-retailer to develop tools that automatically explore the catalogue for the customer. In this dissertation, we develop a recommender system (RS), whose purpose is to provide suggestions for products that are most likely of interest to a particular customer. There are two primary contributions of this dissertation. First, we describe a set of six characteristics that all effective RS's should possess, namely; accuracy, responsiveness, durability, scalability, model management, and extensibility. Second, we develop an RS that is capable of serving recommendations in an actual e-retail environment. The design of the RS is an attempt to embody the characteristics mentioned above. In addition, to show how the RS supports model selection, we present a proof-of-concept experiment comparing two popular methods for generating recommendations that we implement for this dissertation, namely, implicit matrix factorisation (IMF) and Bayesian personalised ranking (BPR)

    An Evaluation of the Use of Diversity to Improve the Accuracy of Predicted Ratings in Recommender Systems

    The diversity; versus accuracy trade off, has become an important area of research within recommender systems as online retailers attempt to better serve their customers and gain a competitive advantage through an improved customer experience. This dissertation attempted to evaluate the use of diversity measures in predictive models as a means of improving predicted ratings. Research literature outlines a number of influencing factors such as personality, taste, mood and social networks in addition to approaches to the diversity challenge post recommendation. A number of models were applied included DecisionStump, Linear Regression, J48 Decision Tree and Naive Bayes. Various evaluation metrics such as precision, recall, ROC area, mean squared error and correlation coefficient were used to evaluate the model types. The results were below a benchmark selected during the literature review. The experiment did not demonstrate that diversity measures as inputs improve the accuracy of predicted ratings. However, the evaluation results for the model without diversity measures were low also and comparable to those with diversity indicating that further research in this area may be worthwhile. While the experiment conducted did not clearly demonstrate that the inclusion of diversity measures as inputs improve the accuracy of predicted ratings, approaches to data extraction, pre-processing, and model selection could inform further research. Areas of further research identified within this paper may also add value for those interested in this topic

    Manipulating the Capacity of Recommendation Models in Recall-Coverage Optimization

    Traditional approaches in Recommender Systems ignore the problem of long-tail recommendations. There is no systematic approach to control the magnitude of long-tail recommendations generated by the models, and there is not even proper methodology to evaluate the quality of long-tail recommendations. This thesis addresses the long-tail recommendation problem from both the algorithmic and evaluation perspective. We proposed controlling the magnitude of long-tail recommendations generated by models through the manipulation with capacity hyperparameters of learning algorithms, and we dene such hyperparameters for multiple state-of-the-art algorithms. We also summarize multiple such algorithms under the common framework of the score function, which allows us to apply popularity-based regularization to all of them. We propose searching for Pareto-optimal states in the Recall-Coverage plane as the right way to search for long-tail, high-accuracy models. On the set of exhaustive experiments, we empirically demonstrate the corectness of our theory on a mixture of public and industrial datasets for 5 dierent algorithms and their dierent versions.Traditional approaches in Recommender Systems ignore the problem of long-tail recommendations.     Supporting lay users in privacy decisions when sharing sensitive data

    The first part of the thesis focuses on assisting users in choosing their privacy settings, by using machine learning to derive the optimal set of privacy settings for the user. In contrast to other work, our approach uses context factors as well as individual factors to provide a personalized set of privacy settings. The second part consists of a set of intelligent user interfaces to assist the users throughout the complete privacy journey, from defining friend groups that allow targeted information sharing; through user interfaces for selecting information recipients, to find possible errors or unusual settings, and to refine them; up to mechanisms to gather in-situ feedback on privacy incidents, and investigating how to use these to improve a user’s privacy in the future. Our studies have shown that including tailoring the privacy settings significantly increases the correctness of the predicted privacy settings; whereas the user interfaces have been shown to significantly decrease the amount of unwanted disclosures.Insbesondere nach den jüngsten Datenschutzskandalen in sozialen Netzwerken wird der Datenschutz für Benutzer immer wichtiger. Obwohl die meisten Benutzer behaupten Wert auf Datenschutz zu legen, verhalten sie sich online allerdings völlig anders: Sie lassen die meisten Datenschutzeinstellungen der online genutzten Dienste, wie z. B. von sozialen Netzwerken oder Diensten zur Standortfreigabe, unberührt und passen sie nicht an ihre Datenschutzanforderungen an. In dieser Arbeit werde ich einen Ansatz zur Lösung dieses Problems vorstellen, der auf zwei verschiedenen Säulen basiert. Der erste Teil konzentriert sich darauf, Benutzer bei der Auswahl ihrer Datenschutzeinstellungen zu unterstützen, indem maschinelles Lernen verwendet wird, um die optimalen Datenschutzeinstellungen für den Benutzer abzuleiten. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Arbeiten verwendet unser Ansatz Kontextfaktoren sowie individuelle Faktoren, um personalisierte Datenschutzeinstellungen zu generieren. Der zweite Teil besteht aus einer Reihe intelligenter Benutzeroberflächen, die die Benutzer in verschiedene Datenschutzszenarien unterstützen. Dies beginnt bei einer Oberfläche zur Definition von Freundesgruppen, die im Anschluss genutzt werden können um einen gezielten Informationsaustausch zu ermöglichen, bspw. in sozialen Netzwerken; über Benutzeroberflächen um die Empfänger von privaten Daten auszuwählen oder mögliche Fehler oder ungewöhnliche Datenschutzeinstellungen zu finden und zu verfeinern; bis hin zu Mechanismen, um In-Situ- Feedback zu Datenschutzverletzungen zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Entstehung zu sammeln und zu untersuchen, wie diese verwendet werden können, um die Privatsphäreeinstellungen eines Benutzers anzupassen. Unsere Studien haben gezeigt, dass die Verwendung von individuellen Faktoren die Korrektheit der vorhergesagten Datenschutzeinstellungen erheblich erhöht. Es hat sich gezeigt, dass die Benutzeroberflächen die Anzahl der Fehler, insbesondere versehentliches Teilen von Daten, erheblich verringern
