In recent years, the concept of Microgrids (MGs) has become more popular due to a significant integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) into electric power systems. Microgrids are small-scale power grids consisting of localized grouping of heterogeneous Distributed Generators (DGs), storage systems, and loads. MGs may operate either in autonomous islanded mode or connected to the main power system. Despite the significant benefits of increasing RESs, many new challenges raise in controlling MGs. Hence, a three layered hierarchical architecture consisting of three control loops closed on the DGs dynamics has been introduced for MGs. The inner loop is called Primary Control (PC), and it provides the references for the DG’s DC-AC power converters. In general, the PC is implemented in a decentralized way with the aim to establish, by means of a droop control term, the desired sharing of power among DGs while preserving the MG stability. Then, because of inverterbased DGs have no inertia, a Secondary Control (SC) layer is needed to compensate the frequency and voltage deviations introduced by the PC’s droop control terms. Finally, an operation control is designed to optimize the operation of the MGs by providing power setpoints to the lower control layers. This thesis is mainly devoted to the design of robust distributed secondary frequency and voltage restoration control strategies for AC MGs to avoid central controllers and complexity of communication networks. Different distributed strategies are proposed in this work: (i) Robust Adaptive Distributed SC with Communication delays (ii) Robust Optimal Distributed Voltage SC with Communication Delays and (iii) Distributed Finite-Time SC by Coupled Sliding-Mode Technique. In all three proposed approaches, the problem is addressed in a multi-agent fashion where the generator plays the role of cooperative agents communicating over a network and physically coupled through the power system. The first approach provides an exponentially converging voltage and frequency restoration rate in the presence of both, model uncertainties, and multiple time-varying delays in the DGs’s communications. This approach consist of two terms: 1) a decentralized Integral Sliding Mode Control (ISMC) aimed to enforce each agent (DG) to behaves as reference unperturbed dynamic; 2) an ad-hoc designed distributed protocol aimed to globally, exponentially, achieves the frequency and voltage restoration while fulfilling the power-sharing constraints in spite of the communication delays. The second approach extends the first one by including an optimization algorithm to find the optimal control gains and estimate the corresponding maximum delay tolerated by the controlled system. In the third approach, the problem of voltage and frequency restoration as well as active power sharing are solved in finite-time by exploiting delay-free communications among DGs and considering model uncertainties. In this approach, for DGs with no direct access to their reference values, a finite-time distributed sliding mode estimator is implemented for both secondary frequency and voltage schemes. The estimator determines local estimates of the global reference values of the voltage and frequency for DGs in a finite time and provides this information for the distributed SC schemes. This dissertation also proposes a novel certainty Model Predictive Control (MPC) approach for the operation of islanded MG with very high share of renewable energy sources. To this aim, the conversion losses of storage units are formulated by quadratic functions to reduce the error in storage units state of charge prediction

[EN] Microgrids have emerged as a solution to address new challenges in power systems with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER). Inverter-based microgrids (IBMG) need to implement proper control systems to avoid stability and reliability issues. Thus, several researchers have introduced multi-objective control strategies for distributed generation on IBMG. This paper presents a review of the different approaches that have been proposed by several authors of multi-objective control. This work describes the main features of the inverter as a key component of microgrids. Details related to accomplishing efficient generation from a control systems' view have been observed. This study addresses the potential of multi-objective control to overcome conflicting objectives with balanced results. Finally, this paper shows future trends in control objectives and discussion of the different multi-objective approaches.Gonzales-Zurita, Ó.; Clairand, J.; Peñalvo-López, E.; Escrivá-Escrivá, G. An Online Data-Driven Method for Microgrid Secondary Voltage and Frequency Control with Ensemble Koopman Modeling

Low inertia, nonlinearity and a high level of uncertainty (varying topologies and operating conditions) pose challenges to microgrid (MG) systemwide operation. This paper proposes an online adaptive Koopman operator optimal control (AKOOC) method for MG secondary voltage and frequency control. Unlike typical data-driven methods that are data-hungry and lack guaranteed stability, the proposed AKOOC requires no warm-up training yet with guaranteed bounded-input-bounded-output (BIBO) stability and even asymptotical stability under some mild conditions. The proposed AKOOC is developed based on an ensemble Koopman state space modeling with full basis functions that combines both linear and nonlinear bases without the need of event detection or switching. An iterative learning method is also developed to exploit model parameters, ensuring the effectiveness and the adaptiveness of the designed control. Simulation studies in the 4-bus (with detailed inner-loop control) MG system and the 34-bus MG system showed improved modeling accuracy and control, verifying the effectiveness of the proposed method subject to various changes of operating conditions even with time delay, measurement noise, and missing measurements.Comment: Accepted by IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid for future publicatio

Therefore, the collaborative microgrids are essentially required to apply an EMS, underlying an operative control strategy in order to provide an efficient system. An EMS is apt to optimize the operation of microgrids from several points of view. Optimal production planning, optimal demand-side management, fuel and emission constraints, the revenue of trading spinning and non-spinning reserve capacity can effectively be managed by EMS. Consequently, the importance of optimization is explicit in microgrid applications. In this paper, the most common control strategies in the microgrid community with potential pros and cons are analyzed. Moreover, a comprehensive review of single objective and multi-objective optimization methods is performed by considering the practical and technical constraints, uncertainty, and intermittency of renewable energies sources. The Pareto-optimal solution as the most popular multi-objective optimization approach is investigated for the advanced optimization algorithms. Eventually, feature selection and neural network-based clustering algorithms in order to analyze the Pareto-optimal set are introduced. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades (MICINN)–Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI), and by the European Regional Development Funds (ERDF), a way of making Europe, under Grant PGC2018-098946-B-I00 funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033/.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Power quality is the manifestation of a disruption in the supply voltage, current or frequency that damages the utility equipment and has become an important issue with the introduction of more sophisticated and sensitive devices. So, the supply power quality issue still remains a major challenge as its degradation can cause huge destabilization of electrical networks. As renewable energy sources have irregular nature, a microgrid essentially needs energy storage system containing advanced power electronic converters which is the root cause of majority of power quality disturbances. Also, the integration of non-linear and unbalanced loads into the grid adds to its power quality problems. This article gives a compact overview on the identification, categorization and mitigation of these power quality events in a microgrid by using various Artificial Intelligence-based techniques like Optimization techniques, Adaptive Learning techniques, Signal Processing and Pattern Recognition, Neural Networks and Fuzzy Logic

Review of distributed control and optimization in energy internet: From traditional methods to artificial intelligence-based methods

Abstract: Energy internet (EI) can alleviate the arduous challenges brought about by the energy crisis and global warming and has aroused the concern of many scholars. In the research of EI control systems, the access of distributed energy causes the power system to exhibit complex nonlinearity, high uncertainty and strong coupling. Traditional control and optimization methods often have limited effectiveness in solving these problems. With the widespread application of distributed control technology and the maturity of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, the combination of distributed control and AI has become an effective method to break through current research bottlenecks. This study reviews the research progress of EI distributed control technologies based on AI in recent years. It can be found that AI‐based distributed control methods have many advantages in maintaining EI stability and achieving optimal energy management. This combination of AI and distributed control makes EI control systems more intelligent, safe and efficient, which will be an important direction for future research. The purpose of this study is to provide a reference as well as useful research ideas for the study of EI control systems

Distributed generations with continuously growing penetration levels offer potential solutions to energy security and reliability with minimum environmental impacts. Distributed Generations when connected to the area electric power systems provide numerous advantages. However, grid integration of distributed generations presents several technical challenges which has forced the systems planners and operators to account for the repercussions on the distribution feeders which are no longer passive in the presence of distributed generations. Grid integration of distributed generations requires accurate and reliable islanding detection methodology for secure system operation. Two distributed generation islanding detection methodologies are proposed in this dissertation. First, a passive islanding detection technique for grid-connected distributed generations based on parallel decision trees is proposed. The proposed approach relies on capturing the underlying signature of a wide variety of system events on a set of critical system parameters and utilizes multiple optimal decision tress in a parallel network for classification of system events. Second, a hybrid islanding detection method for grid-connected inverter based distributed generations combining decision trees and Sandia frequency shift method is also proposed. The proposed method combines passive and active islanding detection techniques to aggregate their individual advantages and reduce or eliminate their drawbacks. In smart grid paradigm, microgrids are the enabling engine for systematic integration of distributed generations with the utility grid. A systematic approach for controlled islanding of grid-connected microgrids is also proposed in this dissertation. The objective of the proposed approach is to develop an adaptive controlled islanding methodology to be implemented as a preventive control component in emergency control strategy for microgrid operations. An emergency power management strategy for microgrid autonomous operation subsequent to inadvertent islanding events is also proposed in this dissertation. The proposed approach integrates microgrid resources such as energy storage systems, demand response resources, and controllable micro-sources to layout a comprehensive power management strategy for ensuring secure and stable microgrid operation following an unplanned islanding event. In this dissertation, various case studies are presented to validate the proposed methods. The simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methodologies
