    Specification of multiparty audio and video interaction based on the Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing

    The Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) is an emerging ISO/ITU-T standard. It provides a framework of abstractions based on viewpoints, and it defines five viewpoint languages to model open distributed systems. This paper uses the viewpoint languages to specify multiparty audio/video exchange in distributed systems. To the designers of distributed systems, it shows how the concepts and rules of RM-ODP can be applied.\ud \ud The ODP ¿binding object¿ is an important concept to model continuous data flows in distributed systems. We take this concept as a basis for multiparty audio and video flow exchanges, and we provide five ODP viewpoint specifications, each emphasising a particular concern. To ensure overall correctness, special attention is paid to the mapping between the ODP viewpoint specifications

    TINA as a virtual market place for telecommunication and information services: the VITAL experiment

    The VITAL (Validation of Integrated Telecommunication Architectures for the Long-Term) project has defined, implemented and demonstrated an open distributed telecommunication architecture (ODTA) for deploying, managing and using a set of heterogeneous multimedia, multi-party, and mobility services. The architecture was based on the latest specifications released by TINA-C. The architecture was challenged in a set of trials by means of a heterogeneous set of applications. Some of the applications were developed within the project from scratch, while some others focused on integrating commercially available applications. The applications were selected in such a way as to assure full coverage of the architecture implementation and reflect a realistic use of it. The VITAL experience of refining and implementing TINA specifications and challenging the resulting platform by a heterogeneous set of services has proven the openness, flexibility and reusability of TINA. This paper describes the VITAL approach when choosing the different services and how they challenge and interact with the architecture, focusing especially on the service architecture and the Ret reference point definitions. The VITAL adjustments and enhancements to the TINA architecture are described. This paper contributes to proving that the TINA-based VITAL ODTA allows for easy and cost-effective development and deployment of advanced end-user and operator services, and can indeed act as the basis for a virtual market place for telecommunications service

    A methodological approach to BISDN signalling performance

    Sophisticated signalling protocols are required to properly handle the complex multimedia, multiparty services supported by the forthcoming BISDN. The implementation feasibility of these protocols should be evaluated during their design phase, so that possible performance bottlenecks are identified and removed. In this paper we present a methodology for evaluating the performance of BISDN signalling systems under design. New performance parameters are introduced and their network-dependent values are extracted through a message flow model which has the capability to describe the impact of call and bearer control separation on the signalling performance. Signalling protocols are modelled through a modular decomposition of the seven OSI layers including the service user to three submodels. The workload model is user descriptive in the sense that it does not approximate the direct input traffic required for evaluating the performance of a layer protocol; instead, through a multi-level approach, it describes the actual implications of user signalling activity for the general signalling traffic. The signalling protocol model is derived from the global functional model of the signalling protocols and information flows using a network of queues incorporating synchronization and dependency functions. The same queueing approach is followed for the signalling transfer network which is used to define processing speed and signalling bandwidth requirements and to identify possible performance bottlenecks stemming from the realization of the related protocols

    The Integrated Media Approach to Networked Multimedia Systems

    Applications which require real-time multimedia services[13] face a number of difficult problems in the transmission of multimedia information. Among the most difficult problems are the heterogeneity of end nodes and the heterogeneity of media Quality of Service (QoS) requirements. End nodes typically consist of a computer and number of sensory input and output devices, such as displays, microphones, and cameras. QoS requirements[18] include degrees of reliability, jitter, and delay. We propose an integrated approach to address these problems. Multimedia input data comprise a sensory environment which an application will make available; these data are packaged together into an Integrated Multimedia Message (IMM). From a received IMM, output data are selectively reproduced to create another sensory environment. We propose an IMM format and protocol behaviors for generation, presentation, and synchronization of these messages. While IMM\u27s are aesthetically pleasing, well-suited to proposed high- speed networks, and ease intramessage synchronization, they are potentially plagued by the need to deliver QoS which meets the worst-case requirements of all of their components[6]. We believe that this problem can be addressed, and are testing that belief experimentally with the U. Penn Experimental Multimedia Conferencing System, which will be embedded in the AURORA Gigabit Testbed

    QoS adaptation in multimedia multicast conference applications for e-learning services

    The evolution of the World Wide Web (WWW) service has incorporated new distributed multimedia conference applications, powering a new generation of e-learning development, and allowing improved interactivity and pro- human relations. Groupware applications are increasingly representative in the Internet home applications market, however, the Quality of Service (QoS) provided by the network is still a limitation impairing their performance. Such applications have found in multicast technology an ally contributing for their efficient implementation and scalability. Additionally, consider QoS as design goal at application level becomes crucial for groupware development, enabling QoS proactivity to applications. The applications’ ability to adapt themselves dynamically according to the resources availability can be considered a quality factor. Tolerant real-time applications, such as videoconferences, are in the frontline to benefit from QoS adaptation. However, not all include adaptive technology able to provide both end-system and network quality awareness. Adaptation, in these cases, can be achieved by introducing a multiplatform middleware layer responsible for tutoring the applications' resources (enabling adjudication or limitation) based on the available processing and networking capabilities. Congregating these technological contributions, an adaptive platform has been developed integrating public domain multicast tools, applied to a web-based distance learning system. The system is user-centered (e-student), aiming at good pedagogical practices and proactive usability for multimedia and network resources. The services provided, including QoS adapted interactive multimedia multicast conferences (MMC), are fully integrated and transparent to end-users. QoS adaptation, when treated systematically in tolerant real-time applications, denotes advantages in group scalability and QoS sustainability in heterogeneous and unpredictable environments such as the Internet

    Distributed Rate Allocation in Switch-Based Multiparty Videoconferencing System

    Multiparty videoconferences, or more generally multiparty video calls, are gaining a lot of popularity as they offer a rich communication experience. These applications have, however, large requirements in terms of both network and computational resources and have to deal with sets of heterogenous clients. The multiparty videoconferencing systems are usually either based on expensive central nodes, called Multipoint Control Units (MCU), with transcoding capabilities, or on a peer-to-peer architecture where users cooperate to distribute more efficiently the different video streams. Whereas the first class of systems requires an expensive central hardware, the second one depends completely on the redistribution capacity of the users, which sometimes might neither provide sufficient bandwidth nor be reliable enough. In this work we propose an alternative solution where we use a central node to distribute the video streams, but at the same time we maintain the hardware complexity and the computational requirements of this node as low as possible, e.g. it has no video decoding capabilities. We formulate the rate allocation problem as an optimization problem that aims at maximizing the Quality of Service (QoS) of the videoconference. We propose two different distributed algorithms for solving the optimization problem: the first algorithm is able to find an approximate solution of the problem in a one-shot execution, whereas the second algorithm, based on Lagrangian relaxation, performs iterative updates of the optimization variables in order to gradually increase the value of the objective function. The two algorithms, though being disjointed, nicely complement each other. If executed in sequence, they allow to achieve both, a quick approximate rate reallocation in case of a sudden change of the system conditions, and a precise refinement of the variables which avoids problems caused by possible faulty approximate solutions. We have further implemented our solution in a network simulator where we show that our rate allocation algorithm is able to properly optimize users' QoS. We also illustrate the benefits of our solution in terms of network usage and overall utility when compared to a baseline heuristic method operating on the same system architecture
