Linear programming and other classical optimization techniques have found important applications in communication systems for many decades. Recently, there has been a surge in research activities that utilize the latest developments in nonlinear optimization to tackle a much wider scope of work in the analysis and design of communication systems. These activities involve every “layer” of the protocol stack and the principles of layered network architecture itself, and have made intellectual and practical impacts significantly beyond the established frameworks of optimization of communication systems in the early 1990s. These recent results are driven by new demands in the areas of communications and networking, as well as new tools emerging from optimization theory. Such tools include the powerful theories and highly efficient computational algorithms for nonlinear convex optimization, together with global solution methods and relaxation techniques for nonconvex optimization

The advances in hardware and wireless technologies have made mobile communication devices affordable by a vast user community. With the advent of rich multimedia and social networking content, an influx of myriads of applications, and Internet supported services, there is an increasing user demand for the Internet connectivity anywhere and anytime. Mobility management is thus a crucial requirement for the Internet today. This work targets novel mobility management techniques, designed to work with the Floating Cloud Tiered (FCT) internetworking model, proposed for a future Internet. We derive the FCT internetworking model from the tiered structure existing among Internet Service Provider (ISP) networks, to define their business and peering relationships. In our novel mobility management scheme, we define Virtual Mobility Domains (VMDs) of various scopes, that can support both intra and inter-domain roaming using a single address for a mobile node. The scheme is network based and hence imposes no operational load on the mobile node. This scheme is the first of its kind, by leveraging the tiered structure and its hierarchical properties, the collaborative network-based mobility management mechanism, and the inheritance information in the tiered addresses to route packets. The contributions of this PhD thesis can be summarized as follows: · We contribute to the literature with a comprehensive analysis of the future Internet architectures and mobility protocols over the period of 2002-2012, in light of their identity and handoff management schemes. We present a qualitative evaluation of current and future schemes on a unified platform. · We design and implement a novel user-centric future Internet mobility architecture called Virtual Mobility Domain. VMD proposes a seamless, network-based, unique collaborative mobility management within/across ASes and ISPs in the FCT Internetworking model. The analytical and simulation-based handoff performance analysis of the VMD architecture in comparison with the IPv6-based mobility protocols presents the considerable performance improvements achieved by the VMD architecture. · We present a novel and user-centric handoff cost framework to analyze handoff performance of different mobility schemes. The framework helps to examine the impacts of registration costs, signaling overhead, and data loss for Internet connected mobile users employing a unified cost metric. We analyze the effect of each parameter in the handoff cost framework on the handoff cost components. We also compare the handoff performance of IPv6-based mobility protocols to the VMD. · We present a handoff cost optimization problem and analysis of its characteristics. We consider a mobility user as the primary focus of our study. We then identify the suitable mathematical methods that can be leveraged to solve the problem. We model the handoff cost problem in an optimization tool. We also conduct a mobility study - best of our knowledge, first of its kind - on providing a guide for finding the number of handoffs in a typical VMD for any given user\u27s mobility model. Plugging the output of mobility study, we then conduct a numerical analysis to find out optimum VMD for a given user mobility model and check if the theoretical inferences are in agreement with the output of the optimization tool

This thesis focus on the digital equalization of fiber impairments for coherent optical transmission systems. New efficient and low-complexity equalization and mitigation techniques that counteract fiber nonlinear impairments are proposed and the tradeoff between performance and complexity is numerically assessed and experimentally demonstrated in metro and long-haul 400G superchannels-based transmission systems. Digital backpropagation (DBP) based on low-complexity split-step Fourier method and Volterra series nonlinear equalizers are experimentally assessed in an uniform superchannel system. In contrast with standard DBP methods, these techniques prove to be able to be implemented with larger step-sizes, consequently requiring a reduced number of multiplications, and still achieve a significant reach extension over linear equalization techniques. Moreover, given its structure, the complexity of the proposed Volterra-based DBP approach can be easily adjusted by changing the nonlinear filter dimension according to the system requirements, thus providing a higher flexibility to the nonlinear equalization block. A frequency-hybrid superchannel envisioning near-future flexible networks is then proposed as a way to increase the system bit-rate granularity. The problematic of the power-ratio between superchannel carriers is addressed and optimized for linear and nonlinear operation regimes using three distinct FEC paradigms. Applying a single FEC to the entire superchannel has a simpler implementation and is found to be a more robust approach, tolerating larger uncertainties on the system parameters optimization. We also investigate the performance gain provided by the application of different DBP techniques in frequency-hybrid superchannel systems, and its implications on the optimum power-ratio. It is shown that the application of DBP can be restricted to the carrier transporting the higher cardinality QAM format, since the DBP benefit on the other carriers is negligible, which might bring a substantially complexity reduction of the DBP technique applied to the superchannel.

The increasing demand for higher data rates is driving the adoption of high-spectral-efficiency (SE) transmission in communication systems. The well-known 1.53 dB gap between Shannon\u27s capacity and the mutual information (MI) of uniform quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) formats indicates the importance of power efficiency, particularly in high-SE transmission scenarios, such as fiber-optic communication systems and wireless backhaul links. Shaping techniques are the only way to close this gap, by adapting the uniform input distribution to the capacity-achieving distribution. The two categories of shaping are probabilistic shaping (PS) and geometric shaping (GS). Various methods have been proposed for performing PS and GS, each with distinct implementation complexity and performance characteristics. In general, the complexity of these methods grows dramatically with the SE and number of dimensions.Among different methods, multidimensional Voronoi constellations (VCs) provide a good trade-off between high shaping gains and low-complexity encoding/decoding algorithms due to their nice geometric structures. However, VCs with high shaping gains are usually very large and the huge cardinality makes system analysis and design cumbersome, which motives this thesis. In this thesis, we develop a set of methods to make VCs applicable to communication systems with a low complexity. The encoding and decoding, labeling, and coded modulation schemes of VCs are investigated. Various system performance metrics including uncoded/coded bit error rate, MI, and generalized mutual information (GMI) are studied and compared with QAM formats for both the additive white Gaussian noise channel and nonlinear fiber channels. We show that the proposed methods preserve high shaping gains of VCs, enabling significant improvements on system performance for high-SE transmission in both the additive white Gaussian noise channel and nonlinear fiber channel. In addition, we propose general algorithms for estimating the MI and GMI, and approximating the log-likelihood ratios in soft-decision forward error correction codes for very large constellations

학위논문(박사) -- 서울대학교대학원 : 공과대학 전기·정보공학부, 2022. 8. 정덕균.In this dissertation, major concerns in the clocking of modern serial links are discussed. As sub-rate, multi-standard architectures are becoming predominant, the conventional clocking methodology seems to necessitate innovation in terms of low-cost implementation. Frequency synthesis with active, inductor-less oscillators replacing LC counterparts are reviewed, and solutions for two major drawbacks are proposed. Each solution is verified by prototype chip design, giving a possibility that the inductor-less oscillator may become a proper candidate for future high-speed serial links. To mitigate the high flicker noise of a high-frequency ring oscillator (RO), a reference multiplication technique that effectively extends the bandwidth of the following all-digital phase-locked loop (ADPLL) is proposed. The technique avoids any jitter accumulation, generating a clean mid-frequency clock, overall achieving high jitter performance in conjunction with the ADPLL. Timing constraint for the proper reference multiplication is first analyzed to determine the calibration points that may correct the existent phase errors. The weight for each calibration point is updated by the proposed a priori probability-based least-mean-square (LMS) algorithm. To minimize the time required for the calibration, each gain for the weight update is adaptively varied by deducing a posteriori which error source dominates the others. The prototype chip is fabricated in a 40-nm CMOS technology, and its measurement results verify the low-jitter, high-frequency clock generation with fast calibration settling. The presented work achieves an rms jitter of 177/223 fs at 8/16-GHz output, consuming 12.1/17-mW power. As the second embodiment, an RO-based ADPLL with an analog technique that addresses the high supply sensitivity of the RO is presented. Unlike prior arts, the circuit for the proposed technique does not extort the RO voltage headroom, allowing high-frequency oscillation. Further, the performance given from the technique is robust over process, voltage, and temperature (PVT) variations, avoiding the use of additional calibration hardware. Lastly, a comprehensive analysis of phase noise contribution is conducted for the overall ADPLL, followed by circuit optimizations, to retain the low-jitter output. Implemented in a 40-nm CMOS technology, the frequency synthesizer achieves an rms jitter of 289 fs at 8 GHz output without any injected supply noise. Under a 20-mVrms white supply noise, the ADPLL suppresses supply-noise-induced jitter by -23.8 dB.본 논문은 현대 시리얼 링크의 클락킹에 관여되는 주요한 문제들에 대하여 기술한다. 준속도, 다중 표준 구조들이 채택되고 있는 추세에 따라, 기존의 클라킹 방법은 낮은 비용의 구현의 관점에서 새로운 혁신을 필요로 한다. abstract: Small wireless cells have the potential to overcome bottlenecks in wireless access through the sharing of spectrum resources. A novel access backhaul network architecture based on a Smart Gateway (Sm-GW) between the small cell base stations, e.g., LTE eNBs, and the conventional backhaul gateways, e.g., LTE Servicing/Packet Gateways (S/P-GWs) has been introduced to address the bottleneck. The Sm-GW flexibly schedules uplink transmissions for the eNBs. Based on software defined networking (SDN) a management mechanism that allows multiple operator to flexibly inter-operate via multiple Sm-GWs with a multitude of small cells has been proposed. This dissertation also comprehensively survey the studies that examine the SDN paradigm in optical networks. Along with the PHY functional split improvements, the performance of Distributed Converged Cable Access Platform (DCCAP) in the cable architectures especially for the Remote-PHY and Remote-MACPHY nodes has been evaluated. In the PHY functional split, in addition to the re-use of infrastructure with a common FFT module for multiple technologies, a novel cross functional split interaction to cache the repetitive QAM symbols across time at the remote node to reduce the transmission rate requirement of the fronthaul link has been proposed.Dissertation/ThesisDoctoral Dissertation Electrical Engineering 201
