    Texture Segregation By Visual Cortex: Perceptual Grouping, Attention, and Learning

    A neural model is proposed of how laminar interactions in the visual cortex may learn and recognize object texture and form boundaries. The model brings together five interacting processes: region-based texture classification, contour-based boundary grouping, surface filling-in, spatial attention, and object attention. The model shows how form boundaries can determine regions in which surface filling-in occurs; how surface filling-in interacts with spatial attention to generate a form-fitting distribution of spatial attention, or attentional shroud; how the strongest shroud can inhibit weaker shrouds; and how the winning shroud regulates learning of texture categories, and thus the allocation of object attention. The model can discriminate abutted textures with blurred boundaries and is sensitive to texture boundary attributes like discontinuities in orientation and texture flow curvature as well as to relative orientations of texture elements. The model quantitatively fits a large set of human psychophysical data on orientation-based textures. Object boundar output of the model is compared to computer vision algorithms using a set of human segmented photographic images. The model classifies textures and suppresses noise using a multiple scale oriented filterbank and a distributed Adaptive Resonance Theory (dART) classifier. The matched signal between the bottom-up texture inputs and top-down learned texture categories is utilized by oriented competitive and cooperative grouping processes to generate texture boundaries that control surface filling-in and spatial attention. Topdown modulatory attentional feedback from boundary and surface representations to early filtering stages results in enhanced texture boundaries and more efficient learning of texture within attended surface regions. Surface-based attention also provides a self-supervising training signal for learning new textures. Importance of the surface-based attentional feedback in texture learning and classification is tested using a set of textured images from the Brodatz micro-texture album.     Automatic Classification of Seafloor Image Data by Geospatial Texture Descriptors

    A novel approach for automatic context-sensitive classification of spatially distributed image data is introduced. The proposed method targets applications of seafloor habitat mapping but is generally not limited to this domain or use case. Spatial context information is incorporated in a two-stage classification process, where in the second step a new descriptor for patterns of feature class occurrence according to a generically defined classification scheme is applied. The method is based on supervised machine learning, where numerous state-of-the-art approaches are applicable. The descriptor computation originates from texture analysis in digital image processing. Patterns of feature class occurrence are perceived as a texture-like phenomenon and the descriptors are therefore denoted by Geospatial Texture Descriptors. The proposed method was extensively validated based on a set of more than 4000 georeferenced video mosaics acquired at the Haakon Mosby Mud Volcano north-west of Norway recorded during cruise ARK XIX3b of the German research vessel Polarstern. The underlying classification scheme was derived from a scheme developed for manual annotation of the same dataset applied in the course of Jerosch [2006]. Features of interest are related to methane discharge at mud volcanoes, which are considered a significant source of methane emission. In the experimental evaluation, based on the prepared training and test data, a major improvement of the classification precision compared to local classification as well as classification based on the raw data from the local spatial context was achieved by the application of the proposed method. The classification precision was particularly improved for rarely occurring classes. In a further comparison with annotated data available from Jerosch [2006] the regional setting of the investigation area obtained by the application of the proposed method was found almost equivalent to the results of an experienced scientist

    ARTSCENE: A Neural System for Natural Scene Classification

    How do humans rapidly recognize a scene? How can neural models capture this biological competence to achieve state-of-the-art scene classification? The ARTSCENE neural system classifies natural scene photographs by using multiple spatial scales to efficiently accumulate evidence for gist and texture. ARTSCENE embodies a coarse-to-fine Texture Size Ranking Principle whereby spatial attention processes multiple scales of scenic information, ranging from global gist to local properties of textures. The model can incrementally learn and predict scene identity by gist information alone and can improve performance through selective attention to scenic textures of progressively smaller size. ARTSCENE discriminates 4 landscape scene categories (coast, forest, mountain and countryside) with up to 91.58% correct on a test set, outperforms alternative models in the literature which use biologically implausible computations, and outperforms component systems that use either gist or texture information alone.     Distributed computing methodology for training neural networks in an image-guided diagnostic application

    Distributed computing is a process through which a set of computers connected by a network is used collectively to solve a single problem. In this paper, we propose a distributed computing methodology for training neural networks for the detection of lesions in colonoscopy. Our approach is based on partitioning the training set across multiple processors using a parallel virtual machine. In this way, interconnected computers of varied architectures can be used for the distributed evaluation of the error function and gradient values, and, thus, training neural networks utilizing various learning methods. The proposed methodology has large granularity and low synchronization, and has been implemented and tested. Our results indicate that the parallel virtual machine implementation of the training algorithms developed leads to considerable speedup, especially when large network architectures and training sets are used

    A Theoretical Analysis of Deep Neural Networks for Texture Classification

    We investigate the use of Deep Neural Networks for the classification of image datasets where texture features are important for generating class-conditional discriminative representations. To this end, we first derive the size of the feature space for some standard textural features extracted from the input dataset and then use the theory of Vapnik-Chervonenkis dimension to show that hand-crafted feature extraction creates low-dimensional representations which help in reducing the overall excess error rate. As a corollary to this analysis, we derive for the first time upper bounds on the VC dimension of Convolutional Neural Network as well as Dropout and Dropconnect networks and the relation between excess error rate of Dropout and Dropconnect networks. The concept of intrinsic dimension is used to validate the intuition that texture-based datasets are inherently higher dimensional as compared to handwritten digits or other object recognition datasets and hence more difficult to be shattered by neural networks. We then derive the mean distance from the centroid to the nearest and farthest sampling points in an n-dimensional manifold and show that the Relative Contrast of the sample data vanishes as dimensionality of the underlying vector space tends to infinity.Comment: Accepted in International Joint Conference on Neural Networks, IJCNN 201

    Automating the construction of scene classifiers for content-based video retrieval

    This paper introduces a real time automatic scene classifier within content-based video retrieval. In our envisioned approach end users like documentalists, not image processing experts, build classifiers interactively, by simply indicating positive examples of a scene. Classification consists of a two stage procedure. First, small image fragments called patches are classified. Second, frequency vectors of these patch classifications are fed into a second classifier for global scene classification (e.g., city, portraits, or countryside). The first stage classifiers can be seen as a set of highly specialized, learned feature detectors, as an alternative to letting an image processing expert determine features a priori. We present results for experiments on a variety of patch and image classes. The scene classifier has been used successfully within television archives and for Internet porn filtering
