Millimeter-wave Evolution for 5G Cellular Networks
Triggered by the explosion of mobile traffic, 5G (5th Generation) cellular
network requires evolution to increase the system rate 1000 times higher than
the current systems in 10 years. Motivated by this common problem, there are
several studies to integrate mm-wave access into current cellular networks as
multi-band heterogeneous networks to exploit the ultra-wideband aspect of the
mm-wave band. The authors of this paper have proposed comprehensive
architecture of cellular networks with mm-wave access, where mm-wave small cell
basestations and a conventional macro basestation are connected to
Centralized-RAN (C-RAN) to effectively operate the system by enabling power
efficient seamless handover as well as centralized resource control including
dynamic cell structuring to match the limited coverage of mm-wave access with
high traffic user locations via user-plane/control-plane splitting. In this
paper, to prove the effectiveness of the proposed 5G cellular networks with
mm-wave access, system level simulation is conducted by introducing an expected
future traffic model, a measurement based mm-wave propagation model, and a
centralized cell association algorithm by exploiting the C-RAN architecture.
The numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed network to realize
1000 times higher system rate than the current network in 10 years which is not
achieved by the small cells using commonly considered 3.5 GHz band.
Furthermore, the paper also gives latest status of mm-wave devices and
regulations to show the feasibility of using mm-wave in the 5G systems.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figures, accepted to be published in IEICE Transactions

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces in Challenging Environments: Underwater, Underground, Industrial and Disaster
Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) have been introduced to improve
the signal propagation characteristics by focusing the signal power in the
preferred direction, thus making the communication environment "smart". The
typical use cases and applications for the "smart" environment include beyond
5G communication networks, smart cities, etc. The main advantage of employing
RISs in such networks is a more efficient exploitation of spatial degrees of
freedom. This advantage manifests in better interference mitigation as well as
increased spectral and energy efficiency due to passive beam steering.
Challenging environments comprise a range of scenarios, which share the fact
that it is extremely difficult to establish a communication link using
conventional technology due to many impairments typically associated with the
propagation medium and increased signal scattering. Although the challenges for
the design of communication networks, and specifically the Internet of Things
(IoT), in such environments are known, there is no common enabler or solution
for all these applications. Interestingly, the use of RISs in such scenarios
can become such an enabler and a game changer technology. Surprisingly, the
benefits of RIS for wireless networking in underwater and underground medium as
well as in industrial and disaster environments have not been addressed yet. In
this paper, we aim at filling this gap by discussing potential use cases,
deployment strategies and design aspects for RIS devices in underwater IoT,
underground IoT as well as Industry 4.0 and emergency networks. In addition,
novel research challenges to be addressed in this context are described.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, submitted for publication in IEEE journa
Pushing AI to Wireless Network Edge: An Overview on Integrated Sensing, Communication, and Computation towards 6G
Pushing artificial intelligence (AI) from central cloud to network edge has
reached board consensus in both industry and academia for materializing the
vision of artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) in the sixth-generation (6G)
era. This gives rise to an emerging research area known as edge intelligence,
which concerns the distillation of human-like intelligence from the huge amount
of data scattered at wireless network edge. In general, realizing edge
intelligence corresponds to the process of sensing, communication, and
computation, which are coupled ingredients for data generation, exchanging, and
processing, respectively. However, conventional wireless networks design the
sensing, communication, and computation separately in a task-agnostic manner,
which encounters difficulties in accommodating the stringent demands of
ultra-low latency, ultra-high reliability, and high capacity in emerging AI
applications such as auto-driving. This thus prompts a new design paradigm of
seamless integrated sensing, communication, and computation (ISCC) in a
task-oriented manner, which comprehensively accounts for the use of the data in
the downstream AI applications. In view of its growing interest, this article
provides a timely overview of ISCC for edge intelligence by introducing its
basic concept, design challenges, and enabling techniques, surveying the
state-of-the-art development, and shedding light on the road ahead
Optimisation of Mobile Communication Networks - OMCO NET
The mini conference “Optimisation of Mobile Communication Networks” focuses on advanced methods for search and optimisation applied to wireless communication networks. It is sponsored by Research & Enterprise Fund Southampton Solent University.
The conference strives to widen knowledge on advanced search methods capable of optimisation of wireless communications networks. The aim is to provide a forum for exchange of recent knowledge, new ideas and trends in this progressive and challenging area. The conference will popularise new successful approaches on resolving hard tasks such as minimisation of transmit power, cooperative and optimal routing
Location Awareness in Beyond 5G Networks
Location awareness is essential for enabling contextual
services and for improving network management in 5th
generation (5G) and beyond 5G (B5G) networks. This paper
provides an overview of the expanding opportunities offered
by location awareness in wireless networks, discusses soft information
(SI)-based approaches for improved location awareness,
and presents case studies in conformity to the 3rd Generation
Partnership Project (3GPP) standardization by the European
Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). Results show
that SI-based approaches can provide a new level of location
awareness in 5G and B5G networks
Towards joint communication and sensing (Chapter 4)
Localization of user equipment (UE) in mobile communication networks has been supported from the early stages of 3rd generation partnership project (3GPP). With 5th Generation (5G) and its target use cases, localization is increasingly gaining importance. Integrated sensing and localization in 6th Generation (6G) networks promise the introduction of more efficient networks and compelling applications to be developed
