    Spatial and temporal EEG dynamics of dual-task driving performance

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Driver distraction is a significant cause of traffic accidents. The aim of this study is to investigate Electroencephalography (EEG) dynamics in relation to distraction during driving. To study human cognition under a specific driving task, simulated real driving using virtual reality (VR)-based simulation and designed dual-task events are built, which include unexpected car deviations and mathematics questions.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We designed five cases with different stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) to investigate the distraction effects between the deviations and equations. The EEG channel signals are first converted into separated brain sources by independent component analysis (ICA). Then, event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP) changes of the EEG power spectrum are used to evaluate brain dynamics in time-frequency domains.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Power increases in the theta and beta bands are observed in relation with distraction effects in the frontal cortex. In the motor area, alpha and beta power suppressions are also observed. All of the above results are consistently observed across 15 subjects. Additionally, further analysis demonstrates that response time and multiple cortical EEG power both changed significantly with different SOA.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study suggests that theta power increases in the frontal area is related to driver distraction and represents the strength of distraction in real-life situations.</p

    Applications of brain imaging methods in driving behaviour research

    Applications of neuroimaging methods have substantially contributed to the scientific understanding of human factors during driving by providing a deeper insight into the neuro-cognitive aspects of driver brain. This has been achieved by conducting simulated (and occasionally, field) driving experiments while collecting driver brain signals of certain types. Here, this sector of studies is comprehensively reviewed at both macro and micro scales. Different themes of neuroimaging driving behaviour research are identified and the findings within each theme are synthesised. The surveyed literature has reported on applications of four major brain imaging methods. These include Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI), Electroencephalography (EEG), Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) and Magnetoencephalography (MEG), with the first two being the most common methods in this domain. While collecting driver fMRI signal has been particularly instrumental in studying neural correlates of intoxicated driving (e.g. alcohol or cannabis) or distracted driving, the EEG method has been predominantly utilised in relation to the efforts aiming at development of automatic fatigue/drowsiness detection systems, a topic to which the literature on neuro-ergonomics of driving particularly has shown a spike of interest within the last few years. The survey also reveals that topics such as driver brain activity in semi-automated settings or the brain activity of drivers with brain injuries or chronic neurological conditions have by contrast been investigated to a very limited extent. Further, potential topics in relation to driving behaviour are identified that could benefit from the adoption of neuroimaging methods in future studies

    Attention, concentration, and distraction measure using EEG and eye tracking in virtual reality

    Attention is important in learning, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Driving, and many other fields. Hence, intelligent tutoring systems, Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder diagnosis systems, and distraction detection of driver systems should be able to correctly monitor the attention levels of individuals in real time in order to estimate their attentional state. We study the feasibility of detecting distraction and concentration by monitoring participants' attention levels while they complete cognitive tasks using Electroencephalography and Eye Tracking in a virtual reality environment. Furthermore, we investigate the possibility of improving the concentration of participants using relaxation in virtual reality. We developed an indicator that estimates levels of attention with a real value using EEG data. The participant-independent indicator based on EEG data we used to assess the concentration levels of participants correctly predicts the concentration state with an accuracy (F1 = 73%). Furthermore, the participant-independent distraction model based on Eye Tracking data correctly predicted the distraction state of participants with an accuracy (F1 = 89%) in a participant-independent validation setting.La concentration est importante dans l’apprentissage, Le trouble du dĂ©ficit de l’attention avec ou sans hyperactivitĂ©, la conduite automobile et dans de nombreux autres domaines.     An EEG-based brain-computer interface for dual task driving detection

    The development of brain-computer interfaces (BCI) for multiple applications has undergone extensive growth in recent years. Since distracted driving is a significant cause of traffic accidents, this study proposes one BCI system based on EEG for distracted driving. The removal of artifacts and the selection of useful brain sources are the essential and critical steps in the application of electroencephalography (EEG)-based BCI. In the first model, artifacts are removed, and useful brain sources are selected based on the independent component analysis (ICA). In the second model, all distracted and concentrated EEG epochs are recognized with a self-organizing map (SOM). This BCI system automatically identified independent components with artifacts for removal and detected distracted driving through the specific brain sources which are also selected automatically. The accuracy of the proposed system approached approximately 90% for the recognition of EEG epochs of distracted and concentrated driving according to the selected frontal and left motor components. © 2013

    Systematic Review of Experimental Paradigms and Deep Neural Networks for Electroencephalography-Based Cognitive Workload Detection

    This article summarizes a systematic review of the electroencephalography (EEG)-based cognitive workload (CWL) estimation. The focus of the article is twofold: identify the disparate experimental paradigms used for reliably eliciting discreet and quantifiable levels of cognitive load and the specific nature and representational structure of the commonly used input formulations in deep neural networks (DNNs) used for signal classification. The analysis revealed a number of studies using EEG signals in its native representation of a two-dimensional matrix for offline classification of CWL. However, only a few studies adopted an online or pseudo-online classification strategy for real-time CWL estimation. Further, only a couple of interpretable DNNs and a single generative model were employed for cognitive load detection till date during this review. More often than not, researchers were using DNNs as black-box type models. In conclusion, DNNs prove to be valuable tools for classifying EEG signals, primarily due to the substantial modeling power provided by the depth of their network architecture. It is further suggested that interpretable and explainable DNN models must be employed for cognitive workload estimation since existing methods are limited in the face of the non-stationary nature of the signal.Comment: 10 Pages, 4 figure

    Systems engineering approaches to safety in transport systems

    openDuring driving, driver behavior monitoring may provide useful information to prevent road traffic accidents caused by driver distraction. It has been shown that 90% of road traffic accidents are due to human error and in 75% of these cases human error is the only cause. Car manufacturers have been interested in driver monitoring research for several years, aiming to enhance the general knowledge of driver behavior and to evaluate the functional state as it may drastically influence driving safety by distraction, fatigue, mental workload and attention. Fatigue and sleepiness at the wheel are well known risk factors for traffic accidents. The Human Factor (HF) plays a fundamental role in modern transport systems. Drivers and transport operators control a vehicle towards its destination in according to their own sense, physical condition, experience and ability, and safety strongly relies on the HF which has to take the right decisions. On the other hand, we are experiencing a gradual shift towards increasingly autonomous vehicles where HF still constitutes an important component, but may in fact become the "weakest link of the chain", requiring strong and effective training feedback. The studies that investigate the possibility to use biometrical or biophysical signals as data sources to evaluate the interaction between human brain activity and an electronic machine relate to the Human Machine Interface (HMI) framework. The HMI can acquire human signals to analyse the specific embedded structures and recognize the behavior of the subject during his/her interaction with the machine or with virtual interfaces as PCs or other communication systems. Based on my previous experience related to planning and monitoring of hazardous material transport, this work aims to create control models focused on driver behavior and changes of his/her physiological parameters. Three case studies have been considered using the interaction between an EEG system and external device, such as driving simulators or electronical components. A case study relates to the detection of the driver's behavior during a test driver. Another case study relates to the detection of driver's arm movements according to the data from the EEG during a driver test. The third case is the setting up of a Brain Computer Interface (BCI) model able to detect head movements in human participants by EEG signal and to control an electronic component according to the electrical brain activity due to head turning movements.     The impact of multisensory integration and perceptual load in virtual reality settings on performance, workload and presence

    Real-world experience is typically multimodal. Evidence indicates that the facilitation in the detection of multisensory stimuli is modulated by the perceptual load, the amount of information involved in the processing of the stimuli. Here, we used a realistic virtual reality environment while concomitantly acquiring Electroencephalography (EEG) and Galvanic Skin Response (GSR) to investigate how multisensory signals impact target detection in two conditions, high and low perceptual load. Different multimodal stimuli (auditory and vibrotactile) were presented, alone or in combination with the visual target. Results showed that only in the high load condition, multisensory stimuli significantly improve performance, compared to visual stimulation alone. Multisensory stimulation also decreases the EEG-based workload. Instead, the perceived workload, according to the "NASA Task Load Index" questionnaire, was reduced only by the trimodal condition (i.e., visual, auditory, tactile). This trimodal stimulation was more effective in enhancing the sense of presence, that is the feeling of being in the virtual environment, compared to the bimodal or unimodal stimulation. Also, we show that in the high load task, the GSR components are higher compared to the low load condition. Finally, the multimodal stimulation (Visual-Audio-Tactile-VAT and Visual-Audio-VA) induced a significant decrease in latency, and a significant increase in the amplitude of the P300 potentials with respect to the unimodal (visual) and visual and tactile bimodal stimulation, suggesting a faster and more effective processing and detection of stimuli if auditory stimulation is included. Overall, these findings provide insights into the relationship between multisensory integration and human behavior and cognition
