Analysis, design and development of a single switch flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter for low power battery charging applications

    Get PDF
The design and performance analysis of a power factor corrected (PFC), single-phase, single switch flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter is carried out for low power battery charging applications. The proposed configuration of the flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter consists of only one switch and operates in discontinuous current mode (DCM), resulting in simplicity in design and manufacturing and reduction in input current total harmonic distortion (THD). The design procedure of the flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter is presented for the battery charging application. To verify and investigate the design and performance, a simulation study of the flyback buck-boost converter in DCM is performed using the PSIM6.0 platform. A laboratory prototype of the proposed single switch flyback buck-boost ac-dc converter is developed and test results are presented to validate the design and developed model of the system

A comparative study of electric power distribution systems for spacecraft

    Get PDF
The electric power distribution systems for spacecraft are compared concentrating on two interrelated issues: the choice between dc and high frequency ac, and the converter/inverter topology to be used at the power source. The relative merits of dc and ac distribution are discussed. Specific converter and inverter topologies are identified and analyzed in detail for the purpose of detailed comparison. Finally, specific topologies are recommended for use in dc and ac systems

High frequency electronic ballast provides line frequency lamp current

    Get PDF
Most electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps provide a sinusoidal lamp current at the switching frequency. The high-frequency current flowing through the lamp can generate significant radiated noise, which is unacceptable in noise-sensitive applications, such as fluorescent lights in airplanes. Using shielded enclosures for the lamps may solve the problem, but it is expensive. A discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) electronic ballast topology is presented which drives the lamp with line frequency current, just like a magnetic ballast. However, compared to a magnetic ballast, its weight is substantially reduced due to operation at 40 kHz switching frequency. The topology also ensures unity power factor at the input and stable lamp operation at the output

Power Quality Enhancement in Hybrid Photovoltaic-Battery System based on three–Level Inverter associated with DC bus Voltage Control

    Get PDF
This modest paper presents a study on the energy quality produced by a hybrid system consisting of a Photovoltaic (PV) power source connected to a battery. A three-level inverter was used in the system studied for the purpose of improving the quality of energy injected into the grid and decreasing the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). A Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm based on a Fuzzy Logic Controller (FLC) is used for the purpose of ensuring optimal production of photovoltaic energy. In addition, another FLC controller is used to ensure DC bus stabilization. The considered system was implemented in the Matlab /SimPowerSystems environment. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed inverter at three levels in improving the quality of energy injected from the system into the grid.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio

Analiza dizajna LCLC rezonantnog invertera za dvostupanjsko dvofazno napajanje

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the design analysis and synthesis of power resonant inverter with sinusoidal output voltage for sensitive loads. The proposed filter must be capable of removing higher harmonic components from the supplying voltage to reach a harmonic distortion of roughly 5% in the whole range of the load (0 − 100%). The inverter can be supplied from either single-phase voltage inverter in full- or half- bridge connection, or from simple DC/DC buck converter. Non-symmetrical control causes higher harmonic content, both odd and even. Simulation and experimental results based on designed parameters and subsequently obtained from Matlab and OrCad models confirm good quality of output quantities, voltage and current.

Comparison of single-phase matrix converter and H-bridge converter for radio frequency induction heating

    Get PDF
This paper compares the newly developed single-phase matrix converter and the more conventional H- bridge converter for radio frequency induction heating. Both the converters exhibit unity power factor, very low total harmonic distortion at the utility supply interface, good controllability under soft switching condition for a wide range of power, and high efficiencies, whilst still having simple structures. A novel switching control pattern has been proposed for the matrix converter in order to maintain the comparable performance to the H-bridge converter. Simulation and experimental results for both converters are presented. Comparisons between two converters have confirmed the excellent performance of the proposed matrix converter

Harmonic correction in power supplies feeding non-linear loads

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the design of an electronic circuit which can be used in conjunction with the power supplies used at the input of non-linear loads (computers, TV sets, etc.) in order to filter out the input current harmonics in such loads. The electronic circuit will fill the gaps of the distorted current waveform so that it becomes sinusoidal and also in phase with the mains supply. In this paper different configurations of the proposed electronic circuit are covered (depending on the location with respect to the non-linear load). An optimization algorithm is carried out in order to find the best location, minimum device rating for different type of loads. The proposed circuit monitors the input current, output voltage and power rating of the power supply. The circuit will then decide whether to filter the input current harmonics or the output voltage harmonics. The circuit will also optimize the best switching frequency for the required load so that the power supply operates at the maximum possible efficiency
