    Decoder-driven mode decision in a block-based distributed video codec

    Distributed Video Coding (DVC) is a video coding paradigm in which the computational complexity is shifted from the encoder to the decoder. DVC is based on information theoretic results suggesting that, under ideal conditions, the same rate-distortion performance can be achieved as for traditional video codecs. In practice however, there is still a significant performance gap between the two coding architectures. One of the main reasons for this gap is the lack of multiple coding modes in current DVC solutions. In this paper, we propose a block-based distributed video codec that supports three coding modes: Wyner-Ziv, skip, and intra. The mode decision process is entirely decoder-driven. Skip blocks are selected based on the estimated accuracy of the side information. The choice between intra and Wyner-Ziv coding modes is made on a rate-distortion basis, by selecting the coding mode with the lowest rate while assuring equal distortion for both modes. Experimental results illustrate that the proposed block-based architecture has some advantages over classical bitplane-based approaches. Introducing skip and intra coded blocks yields average bitrate gains of up to 33.7% over our basic configuration supporting Wyner-Ziv mode only, and up to 29.7% over the reference bitplane-based DISCOVER codec

    2-step scalar deadzone quantization for bitplane image coding

    Modern lossy image coding systems generate a quality progressive codestream that, truncated at increasing rates, produces an image with decreasing distortion. Quality progressivity is commonly provided by an embedded quantizer that employs uniform scalar deadzone quantization (USDQ) together with a bitplane coding strategy. This paper introduces a 2-step scalar deadzone quantization (2SDQ) scheme that achieves same coding performance as that of USDQ while reducing the coding passes and the emitted symbols of the bitplane coding engine. This serves to reduce the computational costs of the codec and/or to code high dynamic range images. The main insights behind 2SDQ are the use of two quantization step sizes that approximate wavelet coefficients with more or less precision depending on their density, and a rate-distortion optimization technique that adjusts the distortion decreases produced when coding 2SDQ indexes. The integration of 2SDQ in current codecs is straightforward. The applicability and efficiency of 2SDQ are demonstrated within the framework of JPEG2000

    Efficient error control in 3D mesh coding

    Our recently proposed wavelet-based L-infinite-constrained coding approach for meshes ensures that the maximum error between the vertex positions in the original and decoded meshes is guaranteed to be lower than a given upper bound. Instantiations of both L-2 and L-infinite coding approaches are demonstrated for MESHGRID, which is a scalable 3D object encoding system, part of MPEG-4 AFX. In this survey paper, we compare the novel L-infinite distortion estimator against the L-2 distortion estimator which is typically employed in 3D mesh coding systems. In addition, we show that, under certain conditions, the L-infinite estimator can be exploited to approximate the Hausdorff distance in real-time implementation

    The problem of finding efficient communications techniques to distribute multi-view video content across different devices and users in a network is receiving a great attention in the last years. Much interest in particular has been devoted recently to the so called field of Distributed Video Coding (DVC). After briefly reporting traditional approaches to multiview coding, this chapter will introduce the field of DVC for multi-camera systems. The theoretical background of Distributed Source Coding (DSC) is first concisely presented and the problem of the application of DSC principles to the case of video sources is then analyzed. The topic is presented discussing approaches to the problem of DVC in both single-view and in multi-view applications
