    An extensive and autonomous deep space navigation system using radio pulsars

    Interstellar navigation poses significant challenges in all aspects of a spacecraft. One of them is reliable, low-cost, real-time navigation, especially when there is a considerable distance between Earth and the spacecraft in question. In this paper, a complete system for navigation using pulsar radio emissions is described and analysed. The system uses a pulsar‟s emissions in the radio spectrum to create a novel system capable of fully autonomous navigation. The system is roughly divided into two parts, the front - end and the back - end, as well as their subdivisions. The front - end performs initial signal reception and pre-processing. It applies time-based coherent de-dispersion to allow for low-power on-board processing, and uses a very wide bandwidth to limit the required antenna size. As a result, the electronics required performing the processing is complex, but the system is well limited in both size and power consumption

    Adaptive Vectorial Filter for Grid Synchronization of Power Converters Under Unbalanced and/or Distorted Grid Conditions

    This paper presents a new synchronization scheme for detecting multiple positive-/negative-sequence frequency harmonics in three-phase systems for grid-connected power converters. The proposed technique is called MAVF-FLL because it is based on the use of multiple adaptive vectorial filters (AVFs) working together inside a harmonic decoupling network, resting on a frequency-locked loop (FLL) which makes the system frequency adaptive. The method uses the vectorial properties of the three-phase input signal in the αÎČ reference frame in order to obtain the different harmonic components. The MAVF-FLL is fully designed and analyzed, addressing the tuning procedure in order to obtain the desired and predefined performance. The proposed algorithm is evaluated by both simulation and experimental results, demonstrating its ability to perform as required for detecting different harmonic components under a highly unbalanced and distorted input grid voltage

    Particle filtering for frequency estimation from acoustic time-series in dispersive media

    Acoustic signals propagating in the ocean carry information about geometry and environmental parameters within the propagation medium. Accurately retrieving this information leads us to effectively estimate parameters that are of utmost importance in environmental studies, climate monitoring, and defense. This dissertation focuses on the development of sequential Bayesian filtering methods to obtain accurate estimates of instantaneous frequencies using Short Term Fourier Transforms within the acoustic field measured at an array of hydrophones, which can be used in a subsequent step for the estimation of propagation related parameters. We develop a particle filter to estimate these frequencies along with modal amplitudes, variance, model order. In the first part of our work, we consider a Gaussian model for the error in the data measurements, which has been the standard approach in instantaneous frequency estimation to date. We here design a filter that identifies the true structure of the data errors and implement a χ2 model to capture this structure appropriately. We demonstrate both with synthetic and real data that our approach is superior to the conventional method, especially for low Signal-to-Noise-Ratios
