Discontinuity-Aware Base-Mesh Modeling of Depth for Scalable Multiview Image Synthesis and Compression
This thesis is concerned with the challenge of deriving disparity from sparsely communicated depth for performing disparity-compensated view synthesis for compression and rendering of multiview images. The modeling of depth is essential for deducing disparity at view locations where depth is not available and is also critical for visibility reasoning and occlusion handling.
This thesis first explores disparity derivation methods and disparity-compensated view synthesis approaches. Investigations reveal the merits of adopting a piece-wise continuous mesh description of depth for deriving disparity at target view locations to enable disparity-compensated backward warping of texture. Visibility information can be reasoned due to the correspondence relationship between views that a mesh model provides, while the connectivity of a mesh model assists in resolving depth occlusion.
The recent JPEG 2000 Part-17 extension defines tools for scalable coding of discontinuous media using breakpoint-dependent DWT, where breakpoints describe discontinuity boundary geometry. This thesis proposes a method to efficiently reconstruct depth coded using JPEG 2000 Part-17 as a piece-wise continuous mesh, where discontinuities are driven by the encoded breakpoints. Results show that the proposed mesh can accurately represent decoded depth while its complexity scales along with decoded depth quality.
The piece-wise continuous mesh model anchored at a single viewpoint or base-view can be augmented to form a multi-layered structure where the underlying layers carry depth information of regions that are occluded at the base-view. Such a consolidated mesh representation is termed a base-mesh model and can be projected to many viewpoints, to deduce complete disparity fields between any pair of views that are inherently consistent. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the base-mesh model in multiview synthesis and compression compared to other state-of-the-art methods, including the JPEG Pleno light field codec. The proposed base-mesh model departs greatly from conventional pixel-wise or block-wise depth models and their forward depth mapping for deriving disparity ingrained in existing multiview processing systems.
When performing disparity-compensated view synthesis, there can be regions for which reference texture is unavailable, and inpainting is required. A new depth-guided texture inpainting algorithm is proposed to restore occluded texture in regions where depth information is either available or can be inferred using the base-mesh model
Methods for Real-time Visualization and Interaction with Landforms
This thesis presents methods to enrich data modeling and analysis in the geoscience domain with a particular focus on geomorphological applications. First, a short overview of the relevant characteristics of the used remote sensing data and basics of its processing and visualization are provided. Then, two new methods for the visualization of vector-based maps on digital elevation models (DEMs) are presented. The first method uses a texture-based approach that generates a texture from the input maps at runtime taking into account the current viewpoint. In contrast to that, the second method utilizes the stencil buffer to create a mask in image space that is then used to render the map on top of the DEM. A particular challenge in this context is posed by the view-dependent level-of-detail representation of the terrain geometry. After suitable visualization methods for vector-based maps have been investigated, two landform mapping tools for the interactive generation of such maps are presented. The user can carry out the mapping directly on the textured digital elevation model and thus benefit from the 3D visualization of the relief. Additionally, semi-automatic image segmentation techniques are applied in order to reduce the amount of user interaction required and thus make the mapping process more efficient and convenient. The challenge in the adaption of the methods lies in the transfer of the algorithms to the quadtree representation of the data and in the application of out-of-core and hierarchical methods to ensure interactive performance. Although high-resolution remote sensing data are often available today, their effective resolution at steep slopes is rather low due to the oblique acquisition angle. For this reason, remote sensing data are suitable to only a limited extent for visualization as well as landform mapping purposes. To provide an easy way to supply additional imagery, an algorithm for registering uncalibrated photos to a textured digital elevation model is presented. A particular challenge in registering the images is posed by large variations in the photos concerning resolution, lighting conditions, seasonal changes, etc. The registered photos can be used to increase the visual quality of the textured DEM, in particular at steep slopes. To this end, a method is presented that combines several georegistered photos to textures for the DEM. The difficulty in this compositing process is to create a consistent appearance and avoid visible seams between the photos. In addition to that, the photos also provide valuable means to improve landform mapping. To this end, an extension of the landform mapping methods is presented that allows the utilization of the registered photos during mapping. This way, a detailed and exact mapping becomes feasible even at steep slopes
Bridging the gap between reconstruction and synthesis
Aplicat embargament des de la data de defensa fins el 15 de gener de 20223D reconstruction and image synthesis are two of the main pillars in computer vision. Early works focused on simple tasks such as multi-view reconstruction and texture synthesis. With the spur of Deep Learning, the field has rapidly progressed, making it possible to achieve more complex and high level tasks. For example, the 3D reconstruction results of traditional multi-view approaches are currently obtained with single view methods. Similarly, early pattern based texture synthesis works have resulted in techniques that allow generating novel high-resolution images.
In this thesis we have developed a hierarchy of tools that cover all these range of problems, lying at the intersection of computer vision, graphics and machine learning. We tackle the problem of 3D reconstruction and synthesis in the wild. Importantly, we advocate for a paradigm in which not everything should be learned. Instead of applying Deep Learning naively we propose novel representations, layers and architectures that directly embed prior 3D geometric knowledge for the task of 3D reconstruction and synthesis. We apply these techniques to problems including scene/person reconstruction and photo-realistic rendering. We first address methods to reconstruct a scene and the clothed people in it while estimating the camera position. Then, we tackle image and video synthesis for clothed people in the wild. Finally, we bridge the gap between reconstruction and synthesis under the umbrella of a unique novel formulation. Extensive experiments conducted along this thesis show that the proposed techniques improve the performance of Deep Learning models in terms of the quality of the reconstructed 3D shapes / synthesised images, while reducing the amount of supervision and training data required to train them.
In summary, we provide a variety of low, mid and high level algorithms that can be used to incorporate prior knowledge into different stages of the Deep Learning pipeline and improve performance in tasks of 3D reconstruction and image synthesis.La reconstrucció 3D i la síntesi d'imatges són dos dels pilars fonamentals en visió per computador. Els estudis previs es centren en tasques senzilles com la reconstrucció amb informació multi-càmera i la síntesi de textures. Amb l'aparició del "Deep Learning", aquest camp ha progressat ràpidament, fent possible assolir tasques molt més complexes. Per exemple, per obtenir una reconstrucció 3D, tradicionalment s'utilitzaven mètodes multi-càmera, en canvi ara, es poden obtenir a partir d'una sola imatge. De la mateixa manera, els primers treballs de síntesi de textures basats en patrons han donat lloc a tècniques que permeten generar noves imatges completes en alta resolució. En aquesta tesi, hem desenvolupat una sèrie d'eines que cobreixen tot aquest ventall de problemes, situats en la intersecció entre la visió per computador, els gràfics i l'aprenentatge automàtic. Abordem el problema de la reconstrucció i la síntesi 3D en el món real. És important destacar que defensem un paradigma on no tot s'ha d'aprendre. Enlloc d'aplicar el "Deep Learning" de forma naïve, proposem representacions novedoses i arquitectures que incorporen directament els coneixements geomètrics ja existents per a aconseguir la reconstrucció 3D i la síntesi d'imatges. Nosaltres apliquem aquestes tècniques a problemes com ara la reconstrucció d'escenes/persones i a la renderització d'imatges fotorealistes. Primer abordem els mètodes per reconstruir una escena, les persones vestides que hi ha i la posició de la càmera. A continuació, abordem la síntesi d'imatges i vídeos de persones vestides en situacions quotidianes. I finalment, aconseguim, a través d'una nova formulació única, connectar la reconstrucció amb la síntesi. Els experiments realitzats al llarg d'aquesta tesi demostren que les tècniques proposades milloren el rendiment dels models de "Deepp Learning" pel que fa a la qualitat de les reconstruccions i les imatges sintetitzades alhora que redueixen la quantitat de dades necessàries per entrenar-los. En resum, proporcionem una varietat d'algoritmes de baix, mitjà i alt nivell que es poden utilitzar per incorporar els coneixements previs a les diferents etapes del "Deep Learning" i millorar el rendiment en tasques de reconstrucció 3D i síntesi d'imatges.Postprint (published version

Inertial-aided Visual Perception of Geometry and Semantics
We describe components of a visual perception system to understand the geometry and semantics of the three-dimensional scene by utilizing monocular cameras and inertial measurement units (IMUs). The use of the two sensor modalities is motivated by the wide availability of the camera-IMU sensor packages present in mobile devices from phones to cars, and their complementary sensing capabilities: IMUs can track the motion of the sensor platform over a short period of time accurately, and provide a scaled and gravity-aligned global reference frame, while cameras can capture rich photometric signatures of the scene, and provide relative motion constraints between images up to scale. We first show that visual 3D reconstruction can be improved by leveraging the global orientation frame -- easily inferred from inertials. In the gravity-aligned global orientation frame, a shape prior can be imposed in depth prediction from a single image, where the normal vectors to surfaces of objects of certain classes tend to align with gravity or orthogonal to it. Adding such a prior to baseline methods for monocular depth prediction yields improvements beyond the state-of-the-art and illustrates the power of utilizing inertials in 3D reconstruction. The global reference provided by inertials is not only gravity-aligned but also scaled, which is exploited in depth completion: We describe a method to infer dense metric depth from camera motion and sparse depth as estimated using a visual-inertial odometry system. Unlike other scenarios using point clouds from lidar or structured light sensors, we have few hundreds to few thousand points, insufficient to inform the topology of the scene. Our method first constructs a piecewise planar scaffolding of the scene, and then uses it to infer dense depth using the image along with the sparse points. We use a predictive cross-modal criterion, akin to “self-supervision,” measuring photometric consistency across time, forward-backward pose consistency, and geometric compatibility with the sparse point cloud. We also launch the first visual-inertial + depth dataset (dubbed ``VOID''), which we hope will foster additional exploration into combining the complementary strengths of visual and inertial sensors. To compare our method to prior work, we adopt the unsupervised KITTI depth completion benchmark, and show state-of-the-art performance on it.In addition to dense geometry, the camera-IMU sensor package can also be used to recover the semantics of the scene. We present two methods to augment a point cloud map with class-labeled objects represented in the form of either scaled and oriented bounding boxes or CAD models. The tradeoff of the two shape representation resides in their generality and capability to model detailed structures. While being more generic, 3D bounding boxes fail to model the details of the objects, whereas CAD models preserve the finest shape details but require more computation and are limited to previously seen objects. Nevertheless, both methods populate an unknown environment with 3D objects placed in a Euclidean reference frame inferred causally and on-line using monocular video along with inertial sensors. Besides, both methods include bottom-up and top-down components, whereby deep networks trained for detection provide likelihood scores for object hypotheses provided by a nonlinear filter, whose state serves as memory. We test our methods on KITTI and SceneNN datasets, and also introduce the VISMA dataset, which contains ground truth pose, point-cloud map, and object models, along with time-stamped inertial measurements.To reduce the drift of the visual-inertial SLAM system -- a building block of all the visual perception systems we have built, we introduce an efficient loop closure detection approach based on the idea of hierarchical pooling of image descriptors. We also open-sourced a full-fledged SLAM system equipped with mapping and loop closure capabilities. The code is publicly available at https://github.com/ucla-vision/xivo
Viewpoint-Free Photography for Virtual Reality
Viewpoint-free photography, i.e., interactively controlling the viewpoint of a photograph after capture, is a standing challenge. In this thesis, we investigate algorithms to enable viewpoint-free photography for virtual reality (VR) from casual capture, i.e., from footage easily captured with consumer cameras. We build on an extensive body of work in image-based rendering (IBR). Given images of an object or scene, IBR methods aim to predict the appearance of an image taken from a novel perspective. Most IBR methods focus on full or near-interpolation, where the output viewpoints either lie directly between captured images, or nearby. These methods are not suitable for VR, where the user has significant range of motion and can look in all directions. Thus, it is essential to create viewpoint-free photos with a wide field-of-view and sufficient positional freedom to cover the range of motion a user might experience in VR. We focus on two VR experiences: 1) Seated VR experiences, where the user can lean in different directions. This simplifies the problem, as the scene is only observed from a small range of viewpoints. Thus, we focus on easy capture, showing how to turn panorama-style capture into 3D photos, a simple representation for viewpoint-free photos, and also how to speed up processing so users can see the final result on-site. 2) Room-scale VR experiences, where the user can explore vastly different perspectives. This is challenging: More input footage is needed, maintaining real-time display rates becomes difficult, view-dependent appearance and object backsides need to be modelled, all while preventing noticeable mistakes. We address these challenges by: (1) creating refined geometry for each input photograph, (2) using a fast tiled rendering algorithm to achieve real-time display rates, and (3) using a convolutional neural network to hide visual mistakes during compositing. Overall, we provide evidence that viewpoint-free photography is feasible from casual capture. We thoroughly compare with the state-of-the-art, showing that our methods achieve both a numerical improvement and a clear increase in visual quality for both seated and room-scale VR experiences
