On First-Order Definable Colorings
We address the problem of characterizing -coloring problems that are
first-order definable on a fixed class of relational structures. In this
context, we give several characterizations of a homomorphism dualities arising
in a class of structure
Forcing a sparse minor
This paper addresses the following question for a given graph : what is
the minimum number such that every graph with average degree at least
contains as a minor? Due to connections with Hadwiger's Conjecture,
this question has been studied in depth when is a complete graph. Kostochka
and Thomason independently proved that . More generally,
Myers and Thomason determined when has a super-linear number of
edges. We focus on the case when has a linear number of edges. Our main
result, which complements the result of Myers and Thomason, states that if
has vertices and average degree at least some absolute constant, then
. Furthermore, motivated by the case when
has small average degree, we prove that if has vertices and edges,
then (where the coefficient of 1 in the term is best
possible)
Splitters and Decomposers for Binary Matroids
Let denote the class of binary matroids with no minors
isomorphic to . In this paper we give a decomposition theorem
for , where is a certain 10-element rank-4
matroid. As corollaries we obtain decomposition theorems for the classes
obtained by excluding the Kuratowski graphs and . These decomposition
theorems imply results on internally -connected matroids by Zhou

Graphs and Ideals generated by some 2-minors
Let G be a finite graph on [n] = {1,2,3,...,n}, X a 2 times n matrix of
indeterminates over a field K, and S = K[X] a polynomial ring over K. In this
paper, we study about ideals I_G of S generated by 2-minors [i,j] of X which
correspond to edges {i,j} of G. In particular, we construct a Groebner basis of
I_G as a set of paths of G and compute a primary decomposition.Comment: 14 pages, to appear in Communications in Algebr
