Three-coloring triangle-free graphs on surfaces III. Graphs of girth five
We show that the size of a 4-critical graph of girth at least five is bounded
by a linear function of its genus. This strengthens the previous bound on the
size of such graphs given by Thomassen. It also serves as the basic case for
the description of the structure of 4-critical triangle-free graphs embedded in
a fixed surface, presented in a future paper of this series.Comment: 53 pages, 7 figures; updated according to referee remark
Long path and cycle decompositions of even hypercubes
We consider edge decompositions of the -dimensional hypercube into
isomorphic copies of a given graph . While a number of results are known
about decomposing into graphs from various classes, the simplest cases of
paths and cycles of a given length are far from being understood. A conjecture
of Erde asserts that if is even, and divides the number
of edges of , then the path of length decomposes . Tapadia et
al.\ proved that any path of length , where , satisfying these
conditions decomposes . Here, we make progress toward resolving Erde's
conjecture by showing that cycles of certain lengths up to
decompose . As a consequence, we show that can be decomposed into
copies of any path of length at most dividing the number of edges of
, thereby settling Erde's conjecture up to a linear factor
Developments on Spectral Characterizations of Graphs
In [E.R. van Dam and W.H. Haemers, Which graphs are determined by their spectrum?, Linear Algebra Appl. 373 (2003), 241-272] we gave a survey of answers to the question of which graphs are determined by the spectrum of some matrix associated to the graph. In particular, the usual adjacency matrix and the Laplacian matrix were addressed. Furthermore, we formulated some research questions on the topic. In the meantime some of these questions have been (partially) answered. In the present paper we give a survey of these and other developments.2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 05C50Spectra of graphs;Cospectral graphs;Generalized adjacency matrices;Distance-regular graphs
