    Apperceptive patterning: Artefaction, extensional beliefs and cognitive scaffolding

    In “Psychopower and Ordinary Madness” my ambition, as it relates to Bernard Stiegler’s recent literature, was twofold: 1) critiquing Stiegler’s work on exosomatization and artefactual posthumanism—or, more specifically, nonhumanism—to problematize approaches to media archaeology that rely upon technical exteriorization; 2) challenging how Stiegler engages with Giuseppe Longo and Francis Bailly’s conception of negative entropy. These efforts were directed by a prevalent techno-cultural qualifier: the rise of Synthetic Intelligence (including neural nets, deep learning, predictive processing and Bayesian models of cognition). This paper continues this project but first directs a critical analytic lens at the Derridean practice of the ontologization of grammatization from which Stiegler emerges while also distinguishing how metalanguages operate in relation to object-oriented environmental interaction by way of inferentialism. Stalking continental (Kapp, Simondon, Leroi-Gourhan, etc.) and analytic traditions (e.g., Carnap, Chalmers, Clark, Sutton, Novaes, etc.), we move from artefacts to AI and Predictive Processing so as to link theories related to technicity with philosophy of mind. Simultaneously drawing forth Robert Brandom’s conceptualization of the roles that commitments play in retrospectively reconstructing the social experiences that lead to our endorsement(s) of norms, we compliment this account with Reza Negarestani’s deprivatized account of intelligence while analyzing the equipollent role between language and media (both digital and analog)

    Spontaneous Meta-Arithmetic as the First Step Toward School Algebra

    Taking as a point of departure the vision of school algebra as a formalized meta-discourse of arithmetic, we have been following six pairs of 7th-grade students (12-13 years old) as they gradually modify their spontaneous meta-arithmetic toward the “official” algebraic form of talk. In this paper we take a look at the very beginning of this process. Preliminary analyses of data have shown, unsurprisingly, that while reflecting on arithmetic processes and relations, the uninitiated 7th graders were employing colloquial means, which could not protect them against occasional ambiguities. More unexpectedly, this spontaneous meta-arithmetic, although not supported by any previous algebraic schooling, displayed some algebra-like features, not to be normally found in everyday discourses

    The study is entitled Translation Techniques of English to Indonesian Subtitles by Anitoki in the Movie Weathering with You. The research aims to classify of translation techniques and describe the quality of translation proposed by Molina and Albir (2002) and Nababan and Sumardiono (2012). The research uses descriptive qualitative research. The object of the study is Weathering with You Movie. The researcher analyzed the collected data and found 532 data of sentences taken in this movie. There are sixteen of translation techniques found in this research study. They are: 1) Adaptation, 2) Amplification, 3) Borrowing, 4) Calque, 5) Compensation, 6) Description, 7) Discursive Creation, 8) Established Equivalence, 9) Generalization, 10) Linguistic Amplification, 11) Linguistic Compression, 12) Literal Translation, 13) Modulation, 14) Reduction, 15) Substitution, 16) Transposition. Then, the researcher also found the translation quality assessment in accuracy, acceptability, and readability.     EXPLORING STUDENTS’ STRATEGIES IN TRANSLATING AUTHENTIC TEXTS FROM ENGLISH TO INDONESIAN LANGUAGE

    Translation is an essential skill for language learners, especially students. Many translation techniques can be used by translators. This study aimed to identify the dominant translation techniques employed by sixth-semester students in the English Education Department at state university Z. To comprehend the phenomenon of this study, qualitative research approaches were utilized. Relevant theories were discussed to achieve the research objectives. The data were gathered by asking the students to translate a video and we recorded them when they did it.  A total of 402 utterances of the translation results from the students were used as the data for this study. The researchers analyzed the data by making a transcription of the video. We then read the transcription of the video (translation results from the students), identified the translation techniques used by the students, classified these techniques based on the video, analyzed the data, and made conclusions.  The findings revealed that 11 translation techniques were employed by the sixth-semester students. These techniques include amplification, borrowing, calque, established equivalents, generalization, linguistic amplification, linguistic compression, literal translation, modulation, reduction, and transposition. Among these techniques, literal translation is the dominant translation technique used by students with a frequency125 out of 402 utterances.     This research aims at (1) To Clasify the function of noun clause and their translation found in the book “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass"and (2) To Classify the methods used by translator in translating noun clause found in the book “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll. This research is qualitative descriptive with the data aim the form of the function of noun clause taken translation method research type the data were collected from the book “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll and its translation into “Petualangan Alice di Negeri Ajaib dan Dunia di Balik Cermin”. The data equalited using dokumentation an content analysis tehory (smith : 2001) and (Vinay and Derbalnet and Molina Albir : 2002). The technique of data collection used in this research was content analysis. The data analysis consists of data reduction, data display, and drawing conclusion. Based on the analysis conducted, it was found that in English noun clause found in the book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass”, the most dominant type of noun clause is subject noun clause with 24 (24,4%) data. Then, followed by direct object noun clause which appear 22 times (22,4%). Object complement appear in 18 data (18,3%), appositive appear in 14 data (14,2%), adjective phrase complement appear in 7 data (7,14%), prepositional complement appear in 6 data (6,12%), and the least is indirect object appear in 5 data (5,10%). Then, the most dominant type of English noun clause is subject noun clause with 24 (24,4%) data. Then, followed by direct object noun clause which appear 22 times (22,4%). There are 8 translation method used out of 18 translation method proposed by Vinay and Drabelnet and Molina Albir. The most frequently translation method used in translating the noun clause in the book “Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass" by Lewis Carroll is establish or establish equivalence which appear 53 times (54,08%). Then literal translation 19 appear in 19 data (19,38%), compensation appear in 7 data (7,14%), calque appear in 6 data (6,12%), transposition 6 data (6,12%), descriptive in 4 data (4,08%), particularization in 1 data (1,02), and the last is discursive creation in 3 data (3,06%)

    Translating from English into Indonesian: Which techniques to teach EFL students to be professional translators?

    The credits for translation courses offered at the study program of English Language Teaching at a university level in Indonesia are very limited, which is not sufficient to teach and facilitate practices for all techniques of translation. Therefore, the students should only be taught techniques frequently used in translation from English to Indonesian. This research was to analyze translation techniques commonly used in translating from English to Indonesian. The data were collected from Colors magazine, an in-flight magazine for Garuda Indonesia. The magazine comes in two languages. The sentences were extracted, and translated sentences in Indonesian were compared to the original version in English. The research results showed that the most frequently used techniques in translating from English into Indonesian are amplification (23.36%), reduction (15.20%), transposition (12.32%), borrowing (12%), modulation (11.68%), and literal translation (10.08%). Therefore, it is recommended that lecturers teaching students majoring English Language Teaching provide them with those techniques of translations with practices, feedbacks and explicit instruction for revisions
