    This Book includes the abstracts of the talks presented at the 2016 International Symposium on Business and Industrial Statistics, held at Barcelona, June 8-10, 2016, hosted at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - Barcelona TECH, by the Department of Statistics and Operations Research. The location of the meeting was at ETSEIB Building (Escola Tecnica Superior d'Enginyeria Industrial) at Avda Diagonal 647. The meeting organizers celebrated the continued success of ISBIS and ENBIS society, and the meeting draw together the international community of statisticians, both academics and industry professionals, who share the goal of making statistics the foundation for decision making in business and related applications.     The exponentiated discrete Weibull Distribution

    In this paper, the exponentiated discrete Weibull distribution is introduced. This new generalization of the discrete Weibull distribution can also be considered as a discrete analogue of the exponentiated Weibull distribution. A special case of this exponentiated discrete Weibull distribution defines a new generalization of the discrete Rayleigh distribution for the first time in the literature. In addition, discrete generalized exponential and geometric distributions are some special sub-models of the new distribution. Here, some basic distributional properties, moments, and order statistics of this new discrete distribution are studied. We will see that the hazard rate function can be in- creasing, decreasing, bathtub, and upside-down bathtub shaped. Estimation of the parameters is illustrated using the maximum likelihood method.     A Physics of Failure Based Qualification Process for Flexible Display Interconnect Materials

    The next paradigm shift in display technology involves making them flexible, bringing with it many challenges with respect to product reliability. To compound the problem, industry is continuously introducing novel materials and experimenting with device geometries to improve flexibility and optical performance. Hence, a method to rapidly qualify these new designs for high reliability applications is imperative. This dissertation involves the development of a qualification process for gate line interconnects used in flexible displays. The process starts with the observed failure mode of permanent horizontal lines in the displays, followed by the identification of the underlying failure mechanism. Finite element analyses are developed to determine the relationship between the physical flexing and the mechanical stress imposed on the traces. The design of an accelerated life test is performed based on the known agent of failure being cyclic bending that induces a tensile strain. A versatile dedicated test system is designed and integrated in order to rapidly capture changes in resistance of multiple traces during test. Dedicated test structures are also designed and fabricated to facilitate in-situ electrical measurements and direct observations. Since the test structures were consumed during the integration of the test system, random failure times are used in the process of determining a life-stress model. Different models are compared with respect to their applicability to the underlying failure mechanism as well as parameter estimation techniques. This methodology may be applied towards the rapid qualification of other novel materials, process conditions, and device geometries prior to their widespread use in future display systems

    DFTCalc: a tool for efficient fault tree analysis (extended version)

    Effective risk management is a key to ensure that our nuclear power plants, medical equipment, and power grids are dependable; and is often required by law. Fault Tree Analysis (FTA) is a widely used methodology here, computing important dependability measures like system reliability. This paper presents DFTCalc, a powerful tool for FTA, providing (1) efficient fault tree modelling via compact representations; (2) effective analysis, allowing a wide range of dependability properties to be analysed (3) efficient analysis, via state-of-the-art stochastic techniques; and (4) a flexible and extensible framework, where gates can easily be changed or added. Technically, DFTCalc is realised via stochastic model checking, an innovative technique offering a wide plethora of pow- erful analysis techniques, including aggressive compression techniques to keep the underlying state space small

    Discrete distributions with bathtub-shaped hazard rates

    Discrete distributions with bathtub shaped hazard rates have recently become of interest in reliability modelling and analysis. In the present work, we address the problem of obtaining distributions having such hazard rates when the lifetime is discrete. The methods considered here include discretising continuous bathtub models, construction using the score function, construction from decreasing hazard rate distributions and some other methods currently available in the continuous case.     Urban transport governance reform in Barcelona

    The unusual mixed public-private structure of the urban bus market in the metropolitan area of Barcelona provides an interesting context in which to analyze the management challenges and opportunities of the partial privatization of public services. Initiatives used by the public regulator to promote competition for contracts, such as short term concessions to private contractors and the removal of entry barriers, have considerable potential for improving efficiency and quality. The growth in the share of routes managed by private firms in recent years shows that privatization is a credible threat that may well stimulate improved performance among public managers. The type of reform implemented in Barcelona is of interest to all metropolitan areas large enough to operate under constant returns to scale regimes, and suitable for potential concessions of routes in segregated areas inside the metropolitan area, so as not to miss out on the benefits of economies of density.Privatization, mixed public-private, regulation, competition JEL classification:

    Electronic/electric technology benefits study

    The benefits and payoffs of advanced electronic/electric technologies were investigated for three types of aircraft. The technologies, evaluated in each of the three airplanes, included advanced flight controls, advanced secondary power, advanced avionic complements, new cockpit displays, and advanced air traffic control techniques. For the advanced flight controls, the near term considered relaxed static stability (RSS) with mechanical backup. The far term considered an advanced fly by wire system for a longitudinally unstable airplane. In the case of the secondary power systems, trades were made in two steps: in the near term, engine bleed was eliminated; in the far term bleed air, air plus hydraulics were eliminated. Using three commercial aircraft, in the 150, 350, and 700 passenger range, the technology value and pay-offs were quantified, with emphasis on the fiscal benefits. Weight reductions deriving from fuel saving and other system improvements were identified and the weight savings were cycled for their impact on TOGW (takeoff gross weight) and upon the performance of the airframes/engines.
