Discovering Links for Metadata Enrichment on Computer Science Papers
At the very beginning of compiling a bibliography, usually only basic
information, such as title, authors and publication date of an item are known.
In order to gather additional information about a specific item, one typically
has to search the library catalog or use a web search engine. This look-up
procedure implies a manual effort for every single item of a bibliography. In
this technical report we present a proof of concept which utilizes Linked Data
technology for the simple enrichment of sparse metadata sets. This is done by
discovering owl:sameAs links be- tween an initial set of computer science
papers and resources from external data sources like DBLP, ACM and the Semantic
Web Conference Corpus. In this report, we demonstrate how the link discovery
tool Silk is used to detect additional information and to enrich an initial set
of records in the computer science domain. The pros and cons of silk as link

Automated Discovery of Internet Censorship by Web Crawling
Censorship of the Internet is widespread around the world. As access to the
web becomes increasingly ubiquitous, filtering of this resource becomes more
pervasive. Transparency about specific content that citizens are denied access
to is atypical. To counter this, numerous techniques for maintaining URL filter
lists have been proposed by various individuals and organisations that aim to
empirical data on censorship for benefit of the public and wider censorship
research community.
We present a new approach for discovering filtered domains in different
countries. This method is fully automated and requires no human interaction.
The system uses web crawling techniques to traverse between filtered sites and
implements a robust method for determining if a domain is filtered. We
demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach by running experiments to search
for filtered content in four different censorship regimes. Our results show
that we perform better than the current state of the art and have built domain
filter lists an order of magnitude larger than the most widely available public
lists as of Jan 2018. Further, we build a dataset mapping the interlinking
nature of blocked content between domains and exhibit the tightly networked
nature of censored web resources
Report of the Stanford Linked Data Workshop
The Stanford University Libraries and Academic Information Resources (SULAIR) with the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) conducted at week-long workshop on the prospects for a large scale, multi-national, multi-institutional prototype of a Linked Data environment for discovery of and navigation among the rapidly, chaotically expanding array of academic information resources. As preparation for the workshop, CLIR sponsored a survey by Jerry Persons, Chief Information Architect emeritus of SULAIR that was published originally for workshop participants as background to the workshop and is now publicly available. The original intention of the workshop was to devise a plan for such a prototype. However, such was the diversity of knowledge, experience, and views of the potential of Linked Data approaches that the workshop participants turned to two more fundamental goals: building common understanding and enthusiasm on the one hand and identifying opportunities and challenges to be confronted in the preparation of the intended prototype and its operation on the other. In pursuit of those objectives, the workshop participants produced:1. a value statement addressing the question of why a Linked Data approach is worth prototyping;2. a manifesto for Linked Libraries (and Museums and Archives and …);3. an outline of the phases in a life cycle of Linked Data approaches;4. a prioritized list of known issues in generating, harvesting & using Linked Data;5. a workflow with notes for converting library bibliographic records and other academic metadata to URIs;6. examples of potential “killer apps” using Linked Data: and7. a list of next steps and potential projects.This report includes a summary of the workshop agenda, a chart showing the use of Linked Data in cultural heritage venues, and short biographies and statements from each of the participants
Ontology mapping by concept similarity
This paper presents an approach to the problem of mapping ontologies. The motivation for the research stems from the Diogene Project which is developing a web training environment for ICT professionals. The system includes high quality training material from registered content providers, and free web material will also be made available through the project's "Web Discovery" component. This involves using web search engines to locate relevant material, and mapping the ontology at the core of the Diogene system to other ontologies that exist on the Semantic Web. The project's approach to ontology mapping is presented, and an evaluation of this method is described
Service Learning in Undergraduate Nursing Education: Strategies to Facilitate Meaningful Reflection
Service learning is recognized as a valuable pedagogy involving experiential learning, reflection, and reciprocal learning. Students develop critical thinking and social awareness by using the crucial activity of reflecting upon their experiential learning with community partners. The purpose of this paper is to demystify the process of reflection by identifying best practices to enhance reflection and offering suggestions for grading. By understanding “the what” and “the how” of reflection, educators can implement service learning experiences designed to include the essential component of reflection. Strategies for facilitating meaningful reflection are described including descriptions of what students should reflect upon and how to initiate reflection through writing, reading, doing, and telling. Grading rubrics are suggested to facilitate evaluation of student reflection. When properly implemented, service learning encourages students to be good citizens of the world. By using best practices associated with reflection, students can be challenged to think critically about the world and how their service can achieve community goals
Effect of heuristics on serendipity in path-based storytelling with linked data
Path-based storytelling with Linked Data on the Web provides users the ability to discover concepts in an entertaining and educational way. Given a query context, many state-of-the-art pathfinding approaches aim at telling a story that coincides with the user's expectations by investigating paths over Linked Data on the Web. By taking into account serendipity in storytelling, we aim at improving and tailoring existing approaches towards better fitting user expectations so that users are able to discover interesting knowledge without feeling unsure or even lost in the story facts. To this end, we propose to optimize the link estimation between - and the selection of facts in a story by increasing the consistency and relevancy of links between facts through additional domain delineation and refinement steps. In order to address multiple aspects of serendipity, we propose and investigate combinations of weights and heuristics in paths forming the essential building blocks for each story. Our experimental findings with stories based on DBpedia indicate the improvements when applying the optimized algorithm
Enabling quantitative data analysis through e-infrastructures
This paper discusses how quantitative data analysis in the social sciences can engage with and exploit an e-Infrastructure. We highlight how a number of activities which are central to quantitative data analysis, referred to as ‘data management’, can benefit from e-infrastructure support. We conclude by discussing how these issues are relevant to the DAMES (Data Management through e-Social Science) research Node, an ongoing project that aims to develop e-Infrastructural resources for quantitative data analysis in the social sciences
Cross-lingual Linking on the Multilingual Web of Data (position statement)
Recently, the Semantic Web has experienced signi�cant advancements in standards and techniques, as well as in the amount of semantic information available online. Even so, mechanisms are still needed to automatically reconcile semantic information when it is expressed in di�erent natural languages, so that access to Web information across language barriers can be improved. That requires developing techniques for discovering and representing cross-lingual links on the Web of Data.
