A discontinuous Galerkin method for a new class of Green-Naghdi equations on simplicial unstructured meshes
In this paper, we introduce a discontinuous Finite Element formulation on
simplicial unstructured meshes for the study of free surface flows based on the
fully nonlinear and weakly dispersive Green-Naghdi equations. Working with a
new class of asymptotically equivalent equations, which have a simplified
analytical structure, we consider a decoupling strategy: we approximate the
solutions of the classical shallow water equations supplemented with a source
term globally accounting for the non-hydrostatic effects and we show that this
source term can be computed through the resolution of scalar elliptic
second-order sub-problems. The assets of the proposed discrete formulation are:
(i) the handling of arbitrary unstructured simplicial meshes, (ii) an arbitrary
order of approximation in space, (iii) the exact preservation of the motionless
steady states, (iv) the preservation of the water height positivity, (v) a
simple way to enhance any numerical code based on the nonlinear shallow water
equations. The resulting numerical model is validated through several
benchmarks involving nonlinear wave transformations and run-up over complex
topographies
hp-Version discontinuous Galerkin finite element methods for semilinear parabolic problems
We consider the hp-version interior penalty discontinuous Galerkin finite element method (hp-DGFEM) for semilinear parabolic equations with mixed Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions. Our main concern is the error analysis of the hp--DGFEM on shape--regular spatial meshes. We derive error bounds under various hypotheses on the regularity of the solution, for both the symmetric and non--symmetric versions of DGFEM
On Multiscale Methods in Petrov-Galerkin formulation
In this work we investigate the advantages of multiscale methods in
Petrov-Galerkin (PG) formulation in a general framework. The framework is based
on a localized orthogonal decomposition of a high dimensional solution space
into a low dimensional multiscale space with good approximation properties and
a high dimensional remainder space{, which only contains negligible fine scale
information}. The multiscale space can then be used to obtain accurate Galerkin
approximations. As a model problem we consider the Poisson equation. We prove
that a Petrov-Galerkin formulation does not suffer from a significant loss of
accuracy, and still preserve the convergence order of the original multiscale
method. We also prove inf-sup stability of a PG Continuous and a Discontinuous
Galerkin Finite Element multiscale method. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the
Petrov-Galerkin method can decrease the computational complexity significantly,
allowing for more efficient solution algorithms. As another application of the
framework, we show how the Petrov-Galerkin framework can be used to construct a
locally mass conservative solver for two-phase flow simulation that employs the
Buckley-Leverett equation. To achieve this, we couple a PG Discontinuous
Galerkin Finite Element method with an upwind scheme for a hyperbolic
conservation law
A discontinuous Galerkin method for the Vlasov-Poisson system
A discontinuous Galerkin method for approximating the Vlasov-Poisson system
of equations describing the time evolution of a collisionless plasma is
proposed. The method is mass conservative and, in the case that piecewise
constant functions are used as a basis, the method preserves the positivity of
the electron distribution function and weakly enforces continuity of the
electric field through mesh interfaces and boundary conditions. The performance
of the method is investigated by computing several examples and error estimates
associated system's approximation are stated. In particular, computed results
are benchmarked against established theoretical results for linear advection
and the phenomenon of linear Landau damping for both the Maxwell and Lorentz
distributions. Moreover, two nonlinear problems are considered: nonlinear
Landau damping and a version of the two-stream instability are computed. For
the latter, fine scale details of the resulting long-time BGK-like state are
presented. Conservation laws are examined and various comparisons to theory are
made. The results obtained demonstrate that the discontinuous Galerkin method
is a viable option for integrating the Vlasov-Poisson system.Comment: To appear in Journal for Computational Physics, 2011. 63 pages, 86
