    A Family of Maximum Margin Criterion for Adaptive Learning

    In recent years, pattern analysis plays an important role in data mining and recognition, and many variants have been proposed to handle complicated scenarios. In the literature, it has been quite familiar with high dimensionality of data samples, but either such characteristics or large data have become usual sense in real-world applications. In this work, an improved maximum margin criterion (MMC) method is introduced firstly. With the new definition of MMC, several variants of MMC, including random MMC, layered MMC, 2D^2 MMC, are designed to make adaptive learning applicable. Particularly, the MMC network is developed to learn deep features of images in light of simple deep networks. Experimental results on a diversity of data sets demonstrate the discriminant ability of proposed MMC methods are compenent to be adopted in complicated application scenarios.Comment: 14 page

    3D Face Recognition: Feature Extraction Based on Directional Signatures from Range Data and Disparity Maps

    In this paper, the author presents a work on i) range data and ii) stereo-vision system based disparity map profiling that are used as signatures for 3D face recognition. The signatures capture the intensity variations along a line at sample points on a face in any particular direction. The directional signatures and some of their combinations are compared to study the variability in recognition performances. Two 3D face image datasets namely, a local student database captured with a stereo vision system and the FRGC v1 range dataset are used for performance evaluation

    Handwritten Character Recognition of South Indian Scripts: A Review

    Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian scripts especially for the South Indian scripts.
