Handwritten Character Recognition of South Indian Scripts: A Review
Handwritten character recognition is always a frontier area of research in
the field of pattern recognition and image processing and there is a large
demand for OCR on hand written documents. Even though, sufficient studies have
performed in foreign scripts like Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters, only
a very few work can be traced for handwritten character recognition of Indian
scripts especially for the South Indian scripts. This paper provides an
overview of offline handwritten character recognition in South Indian Scripts,

Out-of-sample generalizations for supervised manifold learning for classification
Supervised manifold learning methods for data classification map data samples
residing in a high-dimensional ambient space to a lower-dimensional domain in a
structure-preserving way, while enhancing the separation between different
classes in the learned embedding. Most nonlinear supervised manifold learning
methods compute the embedding of the manifolds only at the initially available
training points, while the generalization of the embedding to novel points,
known as the out-of-sample extension problem in manifold learning, becomes
especially important in classification applications. In this work, we propose a
semi-supervised method for building an interpolation function that provides an
out-of-sample extension for general supervised manifold learning algorithms
studied in the context of classification. The proposed algorithm computes a
radial basis function (RBF) interpolator that minimizes an objective function
consisting of the total embedding error of unlabeled test samples, defined as
their distance to the embeddings of the manifolds of their own class, as well
as a regularization term that controls the smoothness of the interpolation
function in a direction-dependent way. The class labels of test data and the
interpolation function parameters are estimated jointly with a progressive
procedure. Experimental results on face and object images demonstrate the
potential of the proposed out-of-sample extension algorithm for the
classification of manifold-modeled data sets
Multispectral Palmprint Encoding and Recognition
Palmprints are emerging as a new entity in multi-modal biometrics for human
identification and verification. Multispectral palmprint images captured in the
visible and infrared spectrum not only contain the wrinkles and ridge structure
of a palm, but also the underlying pattern of veins; making them a highly
discriminating biometric identifier. In this paper, we propose a feature
encoding scheme for robust and highly accurate representation and matching of
multispectral palmprints. To facilitate compact storage of the feature, we
design a binary hash table structure that allows for efficient matching in
large databases. Comprehensive experiments for both identification and
verification scenarios are performed on two public datasets -- one captured
with a contact-based sensor (PolyU dataset), and the other with a contact-free
sensor (CASIA dataset). Recognition results in various experimental setups show
that the proposed method consistently outperforms existing state-of-the-art
methods. Error rates achieved by our method (0.003% on PolyU and 0.2% on CASIA)
are the lowest reported in literature on both dataset and clearly indicate the
viability of palmprint as a reliable and promising biometric. All source codes

Kannada Character Recognition System A Review
Intensive research has been done on optical character recognition ocr and a
large number of articles have been published on this topic during the last few
decades. Many commercial OCR systems are now available in the market, but most
of these systems work for Roman, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic characters. There
are no sufficient number of works on Indian language character recognition
especially Kannada script among 12 major scripts in India. This paper presents
a review of existing work on printed Kannada script and their results. The
characteristics of Kannada script and Kannada Character Recognition System kcr
are discussed in detail. Finally fusion at the classifier level is proposed to
