Smoothing Dynamic Systems with State-Dependent Covariance Matrices
Kalman filtering and smoothing algorithms are used in many areas, including
tracking and navigation, medical applications, and financial trend filtering.
One of the basic assumptions required to apply the Kalman smoothing framework
is that error covariance matrices are known and given. In this paper, we study
a general class of inference problems where covariance matrices can depend
functionally on unknown parameters. In the Kalman framework, this allows
modeling situations where covariance matrices may depend functionally on the
state sequence being estimated. We present an extended formulation and
generalized Gauss-Newton (GGN) algorithm for inference in this context. When
applied to dynamic systems inference, we show the algorithm can be implemented
to preserve the computational efficiency of the classic Kalman smoother. The
new approach is illustrated with a synthetic numerical example.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
Accurate angle-of-arrival measurement using particle swarm optimization
As one of the major methods for location positioning, angle-of-arrival (AOA) estimation is a significant technology in radar, sonar, radio astronomy, and mobile communications. AOA measurements can be exploited to locate mobile units, enhance communication efficiency and network capacity, and support location-aided routing, dynamic network management, and many location-based services. In this paper, we propose an algorithm for AOA estimation in colored noise fields and harsh application scenarios. By modeling the unknown noise covariance as a linear combination of known weighting matrices, a maximum likelihood (ML) criterion is established, and a particle swarm optimization (PSO) paradigm is designed to optimize the cost function. Simulation results demonstrate that the paired estimator PSO-ML significantly outperforms other popular techniques and produces superior AOA estimates
On the construction of probabilistic Newton-type algorithms
It has recently been shown that many of the existing quasi-Newton algorithms
can be formulated as learning algorithms, capable of learning local models of
the cost functions. Importantly, this understanding allows us to safely start
assembling probabilistic Newton-type algorithms, applicable in situations where
we only have access to noisy observations of the cost function and its
derivatives. This is where our interest lies.
We make contributions to the use of the non-parametric and probabilistic
Gaussian process models in solving these stochastic optimisation problems.
Specifically, we present a new algorithm that unites these approximations
together with recent probabilistic line search routines to deliver a
probabilistic quasi-Newton approach.
We also show that the probabilistic optimisation algorithms deliver promising
results on challenging nonlinear system identification problems where the very
nature of the problem is such that we can only access the cost function and its
derivative via noisy observations, since there are no closed-form expressions
available
The influence of random element displacement on DOA estimates obtained with (Khatri-Rao-)root-MUSIC
Although a wide range of direction of arrival (DOA) estimation algorithms has been described for a diverse range of array configurations, no specific stochastic analysis framework has been established to assess the probability density function of the error on DOA estimates due to random errors in the array geometry. Therefore, we propose a stochastic collocation method that relies on a generalized polynomial chaos expansion to connect the statistical distribution of random position errors to the resulting distribution of the DOA estimates. We apply this technique to the conventional root-MUSIC and the Khatri-Rao-root-MUSIC methods. According to Monte-Carlo simulations, this novel approach yields a speedup by a factor of more than 100 in terms of CPU-time for a one-dimensional case and by a factor of 56 for a two-dimensional case
Multi-Step Knowledge-Aided Iterative ESPRIT for Direction Finding
In this work, we propose a subspace-based algorithm for DOA estimation which
iteratively reduces the disturbance factors of the estimated data covariance
matrix and incorporates prior knowledge which is gradually obtained on line. An
analysis of the MSE of the reshaped data covariance matrix is carried out along
with comparisons between computational complexities of the proposed and
existing algorithms. Simulations focusing on closely-spaced sources, where they

Joint ML calibration and DOA estimation with separated arrays
This paper investigates parametric direction-of-arrival (DOA) estimation in a
particular context: i) each sensor is characterized by an unknown complex gain
and ii) the array consists of a collection of subarrays which are substantially
separated from each other leading to a structured noise covariance matrix. We
propose two iterative algorithms based on the maximum likelihood (ML)
estimation method adapted to the context of joint array calibration and DOA
estimation. Numerical simulations reveal that the two proposed schemes, the
iterative ML (IML) and the modified iterative ML (MIML) algorithms for joint
array calibration and DOA estimation, outperform the state of the art methods
and the MIML algorithm reaches the Cram\'er-Rao bound for a low number of
iterations

Source separation aims to provide machine listeners with similar skills by extracting the sounds of individual sources from a given scene. Existing separation systems operate either by emulating the human auditory system or by inferring the parameters of probabilistic sound models. In this chapter, the authors focus on the latter approach and provide a joint overview of established and recent models, including independent component analysis, local time-frequency models and spectral template-based models. They show that most models are instances of one of the following two general paradigms: linear modeling or variance modeling. They compare the merits of either paradigm and report objective performance figures. They also,conclude by discussing promising combinations of probabilistic priors and inference algorithms that could form the basis of future state-of-the-art systems
