    Engineering optical nonlinearities in metal nanoparticle arrays

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityMetal nanostructures supporting localized surface plasmon (LSP) resonances are an emerging technology for sensing, optical switching, radiative engineering, and solar energy harvesting, among other applications. The unique property of LSP resonances that enable these technologies is their ability to localize and enhance the optical field near the surface of metal nanoparticles. However, many questions still remain regarding the effects of nanoparticle coupling on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of these structures. In this thesis, I investigate the role of long-range photonic and near-field plasmonic coupling on the linear and nonlinear optical properties of metal nanoparticles in periodic and deterministic aperiodic arrays within a combined experimental and theoretical framework. In particular, I have developed optical characterization techniques to study various properties of planar metal nano-cylinder arrays fabricated by electron beam lithography (EBL). These include the effect of Fano-type coupling between structural grating modes and LSP resonances on linear diffraction and second harmonic generation (SHG), the influence of near-field coupling on the efficiency of plasmon enhanced metal photoluminescence (PL), the dependence of two-photon PL (TPPL) on nanoparticle size, and the multi-polar nature of SHG from planar plasmonic arrays. Experimental results are fully supported by linear scattering theory of the near and far-field properties of particle arrays based on a range of analytical, semi-analytical, and fully numerical techniques. The breadth of computational methods used allows the investigation of a wide range of structures including large aperiodic arrays with hundreds of discrete particles and periodic arrays with realistic particle shapes, substrates, and excitation conditions. The technological potential of engineered plasmonic structures is demonstrated by enhanced vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG) spectroscopy, a novel nonlinear sensing technique. These studies have revealed design principles for engineering the interplay of photonic and plasmonic coupling for future linear and nonlinear plasmonic devices for sensing, switching, and modulation. The optical characterization techniques developed in this thesis may additionally be used across a wide range of devices in photonics and nano-optics

    Efficient method of estimating Direction of Arrival (DOA) in communications systems.

    Masters Degree. University of KwaZulu- Natal, Durban.In wireless communications systems, estimation of Direction of Arrival (DOA) has been used both for military and commercial purposes. The signal whose DOA is being estimated, could be a signal that has been reflected from a moving or stationary object, or a signal that has been generated from unwanted or illegal transmitter. When combined with estimating time of arrival, it is also possible to pinpoint the location of a target in space. Localization in space can also be achieved by estimating DOA using two receiving nodes with capability of estimating DOA. The beamforming pattern in smart antenna system is adjusted to emphasize the desired signal and to minimize the interference signal. Therefore, DOA estimation algorithms are critical for estimating the Angle of Arrival (AOA) and beamforming in smart antennas. This dissertation investigates the performance, angular accuracy and resolution of the Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR), Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) and our proposed method Advanced Multiple Signal Classification (A-MUSIC) as DOA algorithms on both Non-Uniform Array (NLA) and Uniform Linear Array (ULA). DOA is critical in antenna design for emphasizing the desired signal and minimizing interference. The scarcity of radio spectrum has fuelled the migration of communication networks to higher frequencies. This has resulted into radio propagation challenges due to the adverse environmental elements otherwise unexperienced at lower frequencies. In rainfall-impacted environments, DOA estimation is greatly affected by signal attenuation and scattering at the higher frequencies. Therefore, new DOA algorithms cognisant of these factors need to be developed and the performance of the existing algorithms quantified. This work investigates the performance of the Conventional Minimum Variance Distortion-less Look (MVDL), Subspace DOA Estimation Methods of Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) and the developed hybrid DOA algorithm on a weather impacted wireless channel. The performance of the proposed Advanced-MUSIC (A-MUSIC) algorithm is compared to the conventional DOA estimation algorithms of Minimum Variance Distortionless Response (MVDR) and the Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) algorithms for both NLA and ULA antenna arrays. The developed simulation results show that A-MUSIC shows superior performance compared to the two other algorithms in terms of Signal Noise Ratio (SNR) and the number of antenna elements. The results show performance degradation in a rainfall impacted communication network with the developed algorithm showing better performance degradation

    Determination of new coefficients in the angular momentum and energy fluxes at infinity to 9PN for eccentric Schwarzschild extreme-mass-ratio inspirals using mode-by-mode fitting

    We present an extension of work in an earlier paper showing high precision comparisons between black hole perturbation theory and post-Newtonian (PN) theory in their region of overlapping validity for bound, eccentric-orbit, Schwarzschild extreme-mass-ratio inspirals. As before we apply a numerical fitting scheme to extract eccentricity coefficients in the PN expansion of the gravitational wave fluxes, which are then converted to exact analytic form using an integer-relation algorithm. In this work, however, we fit to individual lmnlmn modes to exploit simplifying factorizations that lie therein. Since the previous paper focused solely on the energy flux, here we concentrate initially on analyzing the angular momentum flux to infinity. A first step involves finding convenient forms for hereditary contributions to the flux at low-PN order, analogous to similar terms worked out previously for the energy flux. We then apply the upgraded techniques to find new PN terms through 9PN order and (at many PN orders) to e30e^{30} in the power series in eccentricity. With the new approach applied to angular momentum fluxes, we return to the energy fluxes at infinity to extend those previous results. Like before, the underlying method uses a \textsc{Mathematica} code based on use of the Mano-Suzuki-Takasugi (MST) function expansion formalism to represent gravitational perturbations and spectral source integration (SSI) to find numerical results at arbitrarily high precision.Comment: 36 pages, 1 figur

    훈련 자료 자동 추출 알고리즘과 기계 학습을 통한 SAR 영상 기반의 선박 탐지

    학위논문 (석사) -- 서울대학교 대학원 : 자연과학대학 지구환경과학부, 2021. 2. 김덕진.Detection and surveillance of vessels are regarded as a crucial application of SAR for their contribution to the preservation of marine resources and the assurance on maritime safety. Introduction of machine learning to vessel detection significantly enhanced the performance and efficiency of the detection, but a substantial majority of studies focused on modifying the object detector algorithm. As the fundamental enhancement of the detection performance would be nearly impossible without accurate training data of vessels, this study implemented AIS information containing real-time information of vessel’s movement in order to propose a robust algorithm which acquires the training data of vessels in an automated manner. As AIS information was irregularly and discretely obtained, the exact target interpolation time for each vessel was precisely determined, followed by the implementation of Kalman filter, which mitigates the measurement error of AIS sensor. In addition, as the velocity of each vessel renders an imprint inside the SAR image named as Doppler frequency shift, it was calibrated by restoring the elliptic satellite orbit from the satellite state vector and estimating the distance between the satellite and the target vessel. From the calibrated position of the AIS sensor inside the corresponding SAR image, training data was directly obtained via internal allocation of the AIS sensor in each vessel. For fishing boats, separate information system named as VPASS was applied for the identical procedure of training data retrieval. Training data of vessels obtained via the automated training data procurement algorithm was evaluated by a conventional object detector, for three detection evaluating parameters: precision, recall and F1 score. All three evaluation parameters from the proposed training data acquisition significantly exceeded that from the manual acquisition. The major difference between two training datasets was demonstrated in the inshore regions and in the vicinity of strong scattering vessels in which land artifacts, ships and the ghost signals derived from them were indiscernible by visual inspection. This study additionally introduced a possibility of resolving the unclassified usage of each vessel by comparing AIS information with the accurate vessel detection results.전천후 지구 관측 위성인 SAR를 통한 선박 탐지는 해양 자원의 확보와 해상 안전 보장에 매우 중요한 역할을 한다. 기계 학습 기법의 도입으로 인해 선박을 비롯한 사물 탐지의 정확도 및 효율성이 향상되었으나, 이와 관련된 다수의 연구는 탐지 알고리즘의 개량에 집중되었다. 그러나, 탐지 정확도의 근본적인 향상은 정밀하게 취득된 대량의 훈련자료 없이는 불가능하기에, 본 연구에서는 선박의 실시간 위치, 속도 정보인 AIS 자료를 이용하여 인공 지능 기반의 선박 탐지 알고리즘에 사용될 훈련자료를 자동적으로 취득하는 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 이를 위해 이산적인 AIS 자료를 SAR 영상의 취득시각에 맞추어 정확하게 보간하고, AIS 센서 자체가 가지는 오차를 최소화하였다. 또한, 이동하는 산란체의 시선 속도로 인해 발생하는 도플러 편이 효과를 보정하기 위해 SAR 위성의 상태 벡터를 이용하여 위성과 산란체 사이의 거리를 정밀하게 계산하였다. 이렇게 계산된 AIS 센서의 영상 내의 위치로부터 선박 내 AIS 센서의 배치를 고려하여 선박 탐지 알고리즘의 훈련자료 형식에 맞추어 훈련자료를 취득하고, 어선에 대한 위치, 속도 정보인 VPASS 자료 역시 유사한 방법으로 가공하여 훈련자료를 취득하였다. AIS 자료로부터 취득한 훈련자료는 기존 방법대로 수동 취득한 훈련자료와 함께 인공 지능 기반 사물 탐지 알고리즘을 통해 정확도를 평가하였다. 그 결과, 제시된 알고리즘으로 취득한 훈련 자료는 수동 취득한 훈련 자료 대비 더 높은 탐지 정확도를 보였으며, 이는 기존의 사물 탐지 알고리즘의 평가 지표인 정밀도, 재현율과 F1 score를 통해 진행되었다. 본 연구에서 제안한 훈련자료 자동 취득 기법으로 얻은 선박에 대한 훈련자료는 특히 기존의 선박 탐지 기법으로는 분별이 어려웠던 항만에 인접한 선박과 산란체 주변의 신호에 대한 정확한 분별 결과를 보였다. 본 연구에서는 이와 함께, 선박 탐지 결과와 해당 지역에 대한 AIS 및 VPASS 자료를 이용하여 선박의 미식별성을 판정할 수 있는 가능성 또한 제시하였다.Chapter 1.     Engineering aperiodic spiral order for photonic-plasmonic device applications

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityDeterministic arrays of metal (i.e., Au) nanoparticles and dielectric nanopillars (i.e., Si and SiN) arranged in aperiodic spiral geometries (Vogel's spirals) are proposed as a novel platform for engineering enhanced photonic-plasmonic coupling and increased light-matter interaction over broad frequency and angular spectra for planar optical devices. Vogel's spirals lack both translational and orientational symmetry in real space, while displaying continuous circular symmetry (i.e., rotational symmetry of infinite order) in reciprocal Fourier space. The novel regime of "circular multiple light scattering" in finite-size deterministic structures will be investigated. The distinctive geometrical structure of Vogel spirals will be studied by a multifractal analysis, Fourier-Bessel decomposition, and Delaunay tessellation methods, leading to spiral structure optimization for novel localized optical states with broadband fluctuations in their photonic mode density. Experimentally, a number of designed passive and active spiral structures will be fabricated and characterized using dark-field optical spectroscopy, ellipsometry, and Fourier space imaging. Polarization-insensitive planar omnidirectional diffraction will be demonstrated and engineered over a large and controllable range of frequencies. Device applications to enhanced LEDs, novel lasers, and thin-film solar cells with enhanced absorption will be specifically targeted. Additionally, using Vogel spirals we investigate the direct (i.e. free space) generation of optical vortices, with well-defined and controllable values of orbital angular momentum, paving the way to the engineering and control of novel types of phase discontinuities (i.e., phase dislocation loops) in compact, chip-scale optical devices. Finally, we report on the design, modeling, and experimental demonstration of array-enhanced nanoantennas for polarization-controlled multispectral nanofocusing, nanoantennas for resonant near-field optical concentration of radiation to individual nanowires, and aperiodic double resonance surface enhanced Raman scattering substrates

    Estudo de formas de onda e conceção de algoritmos para operação conjunta de sistemas de comunicação e radar

    The focus of this thesis is the processing of signals and design of algorithms that can be used to enable radar functions in communications systems. Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a popular multicarrier modulation waveform in communication systems. As a wideband signal, OFDM improves resolution and enables spectral efficiency in radar systems, while also improving detection performance thanks to its inherent frequency diversity. This thesis aims to use multicarrier waveforms for radar systems, to enable the simultaneous operation of radar and communication functions on the same device. The thesis is divided in two parts. The first part, studies the adaptation and application of other multicarrier waveforms to radar functions. At the present time many studies have been carried out to jointly use the OFDM signal for communication and radar functions, but other waveforms have shown to be possible candidates for communication applications. Therefore, studies on the evaluation of the application of these same signals to radar functions are necessary. In this thesis, to demonstrate that other multicarrier waveforms can overcome the OFDM waveform in radar/communication (RadCom) systems, we propose the adaptation of the filter bank multicarrier (FBMC), generalized frequency division multiplexing (GFDM) and universal filtering multicarrier (UFMC) waveforms for radar functions. These alternative waveforms were compared performance-wise regarding achievable target parameter estimation performance, amount of residual background noise in the radar image, impact of intersystem interference and flexibility of parameterization. In the second part of the thesis, signal processing techniques are explored to solve some of the limitations of the use of multicarrier waveforms for RadCom systems. Radar systems based on OFDM are promising candidates for future intelligent transport networks. Exploring the dual functionality enabled by OFDM, we presents cooperative methods for high-resolution delay-Doppler and direction-of-arrival estimation. High-resolution parameter estimation is an important requirement for automotive radar systems, especially in multi-target scenarios that require reliable target separation performance. By exploring the cooperation between vehicles, the studies presented in this thesis also enable the distributed tracking of targets. The result is a highly accurate multi-target tracking across the entire cooperative vehicle network, leading to improvements in transport reliability and safety.O foco desta tese é o processamento de sinais e desenvolvimento de algoritmos que podem ser utilizados para a habilitar a função de radar nos sistemas de comunicação. OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) é uma forma de onda com modulação multi-portadora, popular em sistemas de comunicação. Para sistemas de radar, O OFDM melhora a resolução e fornece eficiência espectral, além disso sua diversidade de frequências melhora o desempenho na detecção do radar. Essa tese tem como objetivo utilizar formas de onda multi-portadoras para sistemas de radar, possibilitando a operação simultânea de funções de radar e de comunicação num mesmo dispositivo. A tese esta dividida em duas partes. Na primeira parte da tese são realizados estudos da adaptabilidade de outras formas de onda multi-portadora para funções de radar. Nos dias atuais, muitos estudos sobre o uso do sinal OFDM para funções de comunicação e radar vêm sendo realizados, no entanto, outras formas de onda mostram-se possíveis candidatas a aplicações em sistemas de comunicação, e assim, avaliações para funções de sistema de radar se tornam necessárias. Nesta tese, com a intenção de demonstrar que formas de onda multi-portadoras alternativas podem superar o OFDM nos sistemas de Radar/comunicação (RadCom), propomos a adaptação das seguintes formas de onda: FBMC (Filter Bank Multicarrier); GFDM (Generalized Frequency Division Multiplexing); e UFMC (Universal Filtering Multicarrier) para funções de radar. Também produzimos uma análise de desempenho dessas formas de onda sobre o aspecto da estimativa de parâmetros-alvo, ruído de fundo, interferência entre sistemas e parametrização do sistema. Na segunda parte da tese serão explorados técnicas de processamento de sinal de forma a solucionar algumas das limitações do uso de formas de ondas multi-portadora para sistemas RadCom. Os sistemas de radar baseados no OFDM são candidatos promissores para futuras redes de transporte inteligentes, porque combinam funções de estimativa de alvo com funções de rede de comunicação em um único sistema. Explorando a funcionalidade dupla habilitada pelo OFDM, nesta tese, apresentamos métodos cooperativos de alta resolução para estimar o posição, velocidade e direção dos alvos. A estimativa de parâmetros de alta resolução é um requisito importante para sistemas de radar automotivo, especialmente em cenários de múltiplos alvos que exigem melhor desempenho de separação de alvos. Ao explorar a cooperação entre veículos, os estudos apresentados nesta tese também permitem o rastreamento distribuído de alvos. O resultado é um rastreamento multi-alvo altamente preciso em toda a rede de veículos cooperativos, levando a melhorias na confiabilidade e segurança do transporte.Programa Doutoral em Telecomunicaçõe
