First orbital solution for the non-thermal emitter Cyg OB2 #9

After the first detection of its binary nature, the spectroscopic monitoring of the non-thermal radio emitter Cyg OB2 #9 (P=2.4yrs) has continued, doubling the number of available spectra of the star. Since the discovery paper of 2008, a second periastron passage has occurred in February 2009. Using a variety of techniques, the radial velocities could be estimated and a first, preliminary orbital solution was derived from the HeI5876 line. The mass ratio appears close to unity and the eccentricity is large, 0.7--0.75. X-ray data from 2004 and 2007 are also analyzed in quest of peculiarities linked to binarity. The observations reveal no large overluminosity nor strong hardness, but it must be noted that the high-energy data were taken after the periastron passage, at a time where colliding wind emission may be low. Some unusual X-ray variability is however detected, with a 10% flux decrease between 2004 and 2007. To clarify their origin and find a more obvious signature of the wind-wind collision, additional data, taken at periastron and close to it, are needed.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, accepted by Ap

L’esperienza del distacco. Elementi di una filosofia della mistica

    Get PDF
This essay aims at clarifying the essence of mystical experience in the main universal religions. To this effect, the author investigates the notion of ‘detachment’ and, from this, conducts a comparative analysis of the modes of detachment actually experimented in some religions as well as in philosophic practice. This is verified through an identification of the specific, paradoxical logic which is typical of any mystic attitude. The essay then aims at a more rigorous characterization of mystic experience, by differentiating it from the realm of ethics and by showing the likely consequences of a mystical approach to politics

Crystal nucleation mechanism in melts of short polymer chains under quiescent conditions and under shear flow

We present a molecular dynamics simulation study of crystal nucleation from undercooled melts of n-alkanes, and we identify the molecular mechanism of homogeneous crystal nucleation under quiescent conditions and under shear flow. We compare results for n-eicosane(C20) and n-pentacontahectane(C150), i.e. one system below the entanglement length and one above. Under quiescent conditions, we observe that entanglement does not have an effect on the nucleation mechanism. For both chain lengths, the chains first align and then straighten locally. Then the local density increases and finally positional ordering sets in. At low shear rates the nucleation mechanism is the same as under quiescent conditions, while at high shear rates the chains align and straighten at the same time. We report on the effects of shear rate and temperature on the nucleation rates and estimate the critical shear rates, beyond which the nucleation rates increase with the shear rate. We show that the viscosity of the system is not affected by the crystalline nuclei.Comment: 9 page

Private equity challenge - investment committee paper - de Longhi - investment thesis and value creation strategy

    Get PDF
This work project consists of an investment committee paper on De’Longhi, one of the world’s leading firms in the manufacturing of high-end small domestic appliances. Throughout the paper, several value creation strategies are proposed, based on the analysis of the capabilities and resources of the firm and the markets in which it operates. In the final section, the returns for this investment are estimated under different operating scenarios and the potential exit options are discussed

Pirandello ed Eduardo messi sotto accusa : la critica cattolica (e non solo)

    Get PDF
Both Luigi Pirandello and Eduardo De Filippo were at times criticized by conservative literary critics within the Catholic Church. The monthly Jesuit journal Civilta Cattolica is a point in case. Hardly any play by the Sicilian playwright survived the harsh denigration by staunch Catholic critics. On the other hand, Eduardo De Filippo was censured only for one particular play, De Pretore Vincenzo. Vatican Council II exercised an enormous positive effect on both the Sicilian and the Neapolitan literary evaluation .peer-reviewe
