Active Brownian particles with velocity-alignment and active fluctuations
We consider a model of active Brownian particles with velocity-alignment in
two spatial dimensions with passive and active fluctuations. Hereby, active
fluctuations refers to purely non-equilibrium stochastic forces correlated with
the heading of an individual active particle. In the simplest case studied
here, they are assumed as independent stochastic forces parallel (speed noise)
and perpendicular (angular noise) to the velocity of the particle. On the other
hand, passive fluctuations are defined by a noise vector independent of the
direction of motion of a particle, and may account for example for thermal
fluctuations.
We derive a macroscopic description of the active Brownian particle gas with
velocity-alignment interaction. Hereby, we start from the individual based
description in terms of stochastic differential equations (Langevin equations)
and derive equations of motion for the coarse grained kinetic variables
(density, velocity and temperature) via a moment expansion of the corresponding
probability density function.
We focus here in particular on the different impact of active and passive
fluctuations on the onset of collective motion and show how active fluctuations
in the active Brownian dynamics can change the phase-transition behaviour of
the system. In particular, we show that active angular fluctuation lead to an
earlier breakdown of collective motion and to emergence of a new bistable

Swimmers in thin films: from swarming to hydrodynamic instabilities
We investigate theoretically the collective dynamics of a suspension of low
Reynolds number swimmers that are confined to two dimensions by a thin fluid
film. Our model swimmer is characterized by internal degrees of freedom which
locally exert active stresses (force dipoles or quadrupoles) on the fluid. We
find that hydrodynamic interactions mediated by the film can give rise to
spontaneous continuous symmetry breaking (swarming), to states with either
polar or nematic homogeneous order. For dipolar swimmers, the stroke averaged
dynamics are enough to determine the leading contributions to the collective
behaviour. In contrast, for quadrupolar swimmers, our analysis shows that
detailed features of the internal dynamics play an important role in
determining the bulk behaviour. In the broken symmetry phases, we investigate
fluctuations of hydrodynamic variables of the system and find that these
destabilize order. Interestingly, this instability is not generic and depends

Differently Shaped Hard Body Colloids in Confinement: From passive to active particles
We review recent progress in the theoretical description of anisotropic hard
colloidal particles. The shapes considered range from rods and dumbbells to
rounded cubes, polyhedra and to biaxial particles with arbitrary shape. Our
focus is on both static and dynamical density functional theory and on computer
simulations. We describe recent results for the structure, dynamics and phase
behaviour in the bulk and in various confining geometries, e.g. established by
two parallel walls which reduce the dimensionality of the system to two
dimensions. We also include recent theoretical modelling for active particles,
which are autonomously driven by some intrinsic motor, and highlight their

Socio-economic aspects of cigarette smoking in Malta and Gozo
Questions on smoking behaviour were included in the Census of Population and Housing taken in November 1985. Information was gathered on the number of cigarettes consumed by smokers, those who had stopped smoking and those who had never smoked. Since the Census, smoking has figured prominently in Maltese newspapers and the Health Education unit has been active in publicising the health hazards associated with tobacco dependence. Nevertheless relatively little research has been done on patterns of cigarette smoking and on the demographic, socio-economic and environmental factors that may go some way towards explaining the sharp variations in cigarette addiction within Malta and Gozo. This paper explores a number of these underlying dimensions and using a simple statistical index identifies those neighbourhoods which have high, about average and low levels of smoking behaviour.peer-reviewe
Religious pro-sociality? Experimental evidence from a sample of 766 Spaniards
This study explores the relationship between several personal religion-related variables and social behaviour, using three paradigmatic economic games: the dictator (DG), ultimatum (UG), and trust (TG) games. A large carefully designed sample of the urban adult population in Granada (Spain) is employed (N = 766). From participants' decisions in these games we obtain measures of altruism, bargaining behaviour and sense of fairness/equality, trust, and positive reciprocity. Three dimensions of religiosity are examined: (i) religious denomination; (ii) intensity of religiosity, measured by active participation at church services; and (iii) conversion out into a different denomination than the one raised in. The major results are: (i) individuals with “no religion” made decisions closer to rational selfish behaviour in the DG and the UG compared to those who affiliate with a “standard” religious denomination; (ii) among Catholics, intensity of religiosity is the key variable that affects social behaviour insofar as religiously-active individuals are generally more pro-social than non-active ones; and (iii) the religion raised in seems to have no effect on pro-sociality, beyond the effect of the current measures of religiosity. Importantly, behaviour in the TG is not predicted by any of the religion-related variables we analyse. While the results partially support the notion of religious pro-sociality, on the other hand, they also highlight the importance of closely examining the multidimensional nature of both religiosity and pro-social behaviour
