Introduction: Studies have shown that whole-body neuromuscular electrical stimulation (WB-EMS) can produce positive physiological responses and be an interesting option for elderly populations with some resistance to conventional exercises. However, the evidence regarding the acute effects induced by WB-EMS on muscle damage and cardiometabolic variables is still scarce. Seven elderly men, physically inactive and with no previous experience with WB-EMS participated in the descriptive, uncontrolled experimental type. It was divided into two studies: Study 1: The objective was to assess muscle damage induced by WBEMS in elderly individuals. The intervention consisted of 20 minutes of WBEMS, with the first 5 minutes being stimulated with WB-EMS and, in the remaining 15 minutes, WB-EMS associated with functional movements that were divided into 3 consecutive equal sets. Muscle damage markers (Late Onset Muscle Pain - DMIT; Maximum Isometric Voluntary Contraction - CVMI; Muscle Thickness - MS; Ecogenicity - ECO) were evaluated in the preintervention (Pre), just after the intervention (Post), 24, 48 and 72 hours later (24h; 48h; 72h) in the Rectus Femoris (RF), Vast Medial (VM), Vast Lateral (VL), Vast Intermediate (VI) and Biceps Brachii (BB) muscles. The statistical analysis was performed using the Generalized Estimation Equation Model (GEE) complemented by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test considering p<0.05. Higher DMIE rates were observed at 24, 48 and 72 h after the intervention, both for knee extensors (p<0.001) and elbow flexors (p<0.001), a significant decrease in CVMI for both muscle groups after 24 h (p=0.001), in addition to the decrease in strength, it was observed up to 72 h later in the knee extensors. The MS of all the muscles evaluated had a tendency to continue increasing up to 72 h after the intervention, as well as echogenicity. The use of WB-EMS in muscles with reduced muscle length, associated with few movements and performed slowly, seems to minimize the occurrence of muscle damage and may contribute to neuromuscular adaptations despite the minimal or absence of changes in muscle tissues.Study 2: The objective was to describe the impact of WB-EMS on ventilatory, cardiocirculatory and metabolic aspects in elderly men. Ventilatory, cardiocirculatory and metabolic variables were determined using an open circuit ergospirometry system using a gas analyzer and a telemetric band in the preintervention moments (Pre), followed by the moment of activation of the WBEMS without voluntary movements (Electro), from first series of voluntary movements associated with WB-EMS (E + M1), the second series of movements associated with WB-EMS (E + M2), the third series (E + M3), and three moments of rest after the intervention lasting 10 minutes each (Post1; Post2; Post3). Significant increases were already observed at the Electro moment when compared to the Pre moment in all variables (p<0.001), with the exception of the tidal volume (VT) which only increases at the moment E + M1 (p<0.001) and carbohydrate consumption (CHO) that decreases at the moment Electro when compared to the Pre (p<0.05). When voluntary movements are associated, all variables increase significantly in relation to the Pre moment (p<0.001) and, with the exception of respiratory rate (RF) and fat consumption (FAT), also significantly increase in relation to the Electro moment ( p<0.001). These results suggest that the addition of the use of WB-EMS can significantly increase the cardiometabolic demand of elderly subjects

U ovom radu donosimo Liturgijski spomendan Svete Marte. U drugom dijelu prikazat ńáemo teologiju misnih molitava (zborna, darovna, poprińćesna) o spomendanu Svete Marte. In this paper we depict the Liturgical feast day of St. Martha. The paper is divided into three parts with sub-headings. In the first part the character of St. Martha from Bethany is portrayed, Lazarus`s and Mary`s sister, as shown in the New Testament, and the legendary biographies, distinctions and descriptions of the Saint. In the second part we show the theology of Mass prayers (community prayer, gift prayer, prayer after Holy Communion) about the feast day of St. Martha. The mass prayers are in Latin and in Croatian and we will outline the main emphasis. In the prayers Martha`s hospitality and service of love are emphasized. In the third part we will show the Liturgical lessons that are selected for the feast day as well as the relevant commentary related to each lesson ‚Äď the first John epistle and the two evangelical fragments of choice. In all three lections the main themes are love and service that interpenetrate each other. All of these features are found in Martha`s life that help her to persistently fulfill the commandment of love for God and the next

NOT ‚ÄėFOR MEDICINAL USE ONLY‚Äô HEALTHCARE NARRATIVES IN SAINTS‚Äô LIVES FROM TWELFTH-CENTURY ENGLAND.

Abstract In recent decades scholarly interest in hagiographical works has allowed for an increasingly multifaceted interpretation of these texts. This has led to their being recognised as valuable sources in contributing to a broader understanding of the medieval period and its expression of sanctity. This thesis looks specifically at health-related narratives from twelfth-century English saints’ lives written by someone who knew the saint or obtained eye-witness testimony of them. Of the ten saints considered, three are hermits, one is lay and six are monastic. Of the hagiographers who can be identified, one is a secular cleric and the others are monks. In this study, the aim is to consider the detail of relevant accounts and show how, and why, the subject of ill-health was managed in a saint’s life. The topics that the hagiographers chose to write about are remarkably consistent across the century. Food, fever and death are constant subjects. The body of the saint is often a central feature, emaciated through fasting, suffering patiently, burning with fever or exalted to immutable white purity in death. Underlying tensions run through the narratives, shown as the writers sought to explicate seemingly incompatible features; the impact of sin, physical illness, debility and death when manifest within the person of a saint. While the focus of the accounts is unequivocally hagiographic, they also show evidence of the growth of medical science over the period, with an increasingly medicalised emphasis. The thesis argues that while the accounts may offer insight into medicine of the period, in order for any interpretation of the texts to be meaningful, they must be viewed first through the lens of hagiography, true to the purposes for which they were written, and not taken in isolation as pieces of medical history

This research study explores how rural households under harsh socio-economic rural life in the Eastern Cape, South Africa define the different meanings of Isidima se khaya, which translates in English as household dignity. The research uses isintu (IsiXhosa-Nguni) languages with African proverbs and idioms to understand the complexity of the African household in rural areas and to show how rural households‚Äô livelihood strategies influence Isidima se khaya beyond work. The study objectives include assessing the different meanings of Isidima se khaya among the rural population in Eastern Cape. To assess the position of women in definitions of Isidima ‚Äď Gendered connotations of Isidima se Khaya; establish from the community members where Isidima se khaya is found in the household; establish the links between livelihood strategies of the home and Isidima se khaya. The study focused mainly on the evolution of the rural economy as it relates to the quality of life and dignity in rural areas. Conducted through an ethnographic study at Gwiligwili village, Keiskammahoek, the data was collected using both participant observations and life history with semi-structured questionnaire interview methods. The data collection and analysis processes were grounded in principles of Constructivist Grounded Theory, which seeks to centre data in building concepts. Findings show legacies of apartheid persist in former South African homelands with many rural households relying on government safety nets as stable and reliable livelihood strategies. It argues that these safety nets, such as public work and social protection, serve as the tools only to conceal the economy of shame and restore Isidima se khaya in precarious rural poor communities and broader South Africa. The study concludes with an interrogation of the concept of personhood attached to Isidima beyond the legalistic and human rights definitions of dignity.Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, 202
