A system-on-chip digital pH meter for use in a wireless diagnostic capsule

    Get PDF
This paper describes the design and implementation of a system-on-chip digital pH meter, for use in a wireless capsule application. The system is organized around an 8-bit microcontroller, designed to be functionally identical to the Motorola 6805. The analog subsystem contains a floating-electrode ISFET, which is fully compatible with a commercial CMOS process. On-chip programmable voltage references and multiplexors permit flexibility with the minimum of external connections. The chip is designed in a modular fashion to facilitate verification and component re-use. The single-chip pH meter can be directly connected to a personal computer, and gives a response of 37 bits/pH, within an operating range of 7 pH units

IUS/payload communication system simulator configuration definition study

    Get PDF
The requirements and specifications for a general purpose payload communications system simulator to be used to emulate those communications system portions of NASA and DOD payloads/spacecraft that will in the future be carried into earth orbit by the shuttle are discussed. For the purpose of on-orbit checkout, the shuttle is required to communicate with the payloads while they are physically located within the shuttle bay (attached) and within a range of 20 miles from the shuttle after they have been deployed (detached). Many of the payloads are also under development (and many have yet to be defined), actual payload communication hardware will not be available within the time frame during which the avionic hardware tests will be conducted. Thus, a flexible payload communication system simulator is required

Silicon-germanium BiCMOS device and circuit design for extreme environment applications

    Get PDF
Silicon-germanium (SiGe) BiCMOS technology platforms have proven invaluable for implementing a wide variety of digital, RF, and mixed-signal applications in extreme environments such as space, where maintaining high levels of performance in the presence of low temperatures and background radiation is paramount. This work will focus on the investigation of the total-dose radiation tolerance of a third generation complementary SiGe:C BiCMOS technology platform. Tolerance will be quantified under proton and X-ray radiation sources for both the npn and pnp HBT, as well as for an operational amplifier built with these devices. Furthermore, a technique known as junction isolation radiation hardening will be proposed and tested with the goal of improving the SEE sensitivity of the npn in this platform by reducing the charge collected by the subcollector in the event of a direct ion strike. To the author's knowledge, this work presents the first design and measurement results for this form of RHBD.M.S.Committee Chair: Cressler, John; Committee Member: Papapolymerou, John; Committee Member: Ralph, Stephe

Preliminary design study of a regenerative life support system information management and display system

    Get PDF
The instrumentation requirements for a regenerative life support systems were studied to provide the earliest possible indication of a malfunction that will permit degradation of the environment. Four categories of parameters were investigated: environmental parameters that directly and immediately influence the health and safety of the cabin crew; subsystems' inputs to the cabin that directly maintain the cabin environmental parameters; indications for maintenance or repair; and parameters useful as diagnostic indicators. A data averager concept is introduced which provides a moving average of parameter values that is not influenced by spurious changes, and is convenient for detecting parameter rates of change. A system is included to provide alarms at preselected parameter levels

A study and experiment plan for digital mobile communication via satellite

    Get PDF
The viability of mobile communications is examined within the context of a frequency division multiple access, single channel per carrier satellite system emphasizing digital techniques to serve a large population of users. The intent is to provide the mobile users with a grade of service consistant with the requirements for remote, rural (perhaps emergency) voice communications, but which approaches toll quality speech. A traffic model is derived on which to base the determination of the required maximum number of satellite channels to provide the anticipated level of service. Various voice digitalization and digital modulation schemes are reviewed along with a general link analysis of the mobile system. Demand assignment multiple access considerations and analysis tradeoffs are presented. Finally, a completed configuration is described
