    Adaptive High-Bandwidth Digitally Controlled Buck Converter with Improved Line and Load Transient Response

    Digitally controlled switching converter suffers from bandwidth limitation because of the additional phase delay in the digital feedback control loop. In order to overcome the bandwidth limitation without using a high sampling rate, this paper presents an adaptive third-order digital controller for regulating a voltage-mode buck converter with a modest 2x oversampling ratio. The phase lag due to the ADC conversion time delay is virtually compensated by providing an early estimation of the error voltage for the next sampling time instant, enabling a higher unity-gain bandwidth without compromising stability. An additional pair of low-frequency pole and zero in the third-order controller increases the low-frequency gain, resulting in faster settling time and smaller output voltage deviation during line transient. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the proposed adaptive third-order controller reduces the settling time by 50% in response to a 1 V line transient and 30% in response to a 600 mA load transient, compared to the baseline static second-order controller.     System identification and adaptive current balancing ON/OFF control of DC-DC switch mode power converter

    PhD ThesisReliability becomes more and more important in industrial application of Switch Mode Power Converters (SMPCs). A poorly performing power supply in a power system can influence its operation and potentially compromise the entire system performance in terms of efficiency. To maintain a high reliability, high performance SMPC effective control is necessary for regulating the output of the SMPC system. However, an uncertainty is a key factor in SMPC operation. For example, parameter variations can be caused by environmental effects such as temperature, pressure and humidity. Usually, fixed controllers cannot respond optimally and generate an effective signal to compensate the output error caused by time varying parameter changes. Therefore, the stability is potentially compromised in this case. To resolve this problem, increasing interest has been shown in employing online system identification techniques to estimate the parameter values in real time. Moreover, the control scheme applied after system identification is often called “adaptive control” due to the control signal selfadapting to the parameter variation by receiving the information from the system identification process. In system identification, the Recursive Least Square (RLS) algorithm has been widely used because it is well understood and easy to implement. However, despite the popularity of RLS, the high computational cost and slow convergence speed are the main restrictions for use in SMPC applications. For this reason, this research presents an alternative algorithm to RLS; Fast Affline Projection (FAP). Detailed mathematical analysis proves the superior computational efficiency of this algorithm. Moreover, simulation and experiment result verify this unique adaptive algorithm has improved performance in terms of computational cost and convergence speed compared with the conventional RLS methods. Finally, a novel adaptive control scheme is designed for optimal control of a DC-DC buck converter during transient periods. By applying the proposed adaptive algorithm, the control signal can be successfully employed to change the ON/OFF state of the power transistor in the DC-DC buck converter to improve the dynamic behaviour.     In line with the specified objectives, a Bridgman-type growth configuration in which unavoidable end effects - conventionally leading to growth interface relocation - are compensated by commensurate input-power changes is developed; the growth rate on a microscale is predictable and unaffected by changes in heat transfer conditions. To permit quantitative characterization of the growth furnace cavity (hot-zone), a 3-D thermal field mapping technique, based on the thermal image, is being tested for temperatures up to 1100 C. Computational NIR absorption analysis was modified to now permit characterization of semi-insulating single crystals. Work on growth and characterization of bismuth-silicate was initiated. Growth of BSO (B12SiO20) for seed material by the Czochralski technique is currently in progress. Undergraduate research currently in progress includes: ground based measurements of the wetting behavior (contact angles) of semiconductor melts on substrates consisting of potential confinement materials for solidification experiments in a reduced gravity environment. Hardware modifications required for execution of the wetting experiments in a KC-135 facility are developed

    Stability analysis of switched dc-dc boost converters for integrated circuits

    Boost converters are very important circuits for modern devices, especially battery- operated integrated circuits. This type of converter allows for small voltages, such as those provided by a battery, to be converted into larger voltage more suitable for driving integrated circuits. Two regions of operation are explored known as Continuous Conduction Mode and Discontinuous Conduction Mode. Each region is analyzed in terms of DC and small-signal performance. Control issues with each are compared and various error amplifier architectures explored. A method to optimize these amplifier architectures is also explored by means of Genetic Algorithms and Particle Swarm Optimization. Finally, stability measurement techniques for boost converters are explored and compared in order to gauge the viability of each method.     A control strategy for a distributed power generation microgrid application with voltage and current controlled source converter

    This paper presents a pseudodroop control structure integrated within a microgrid system through distributed power generation (DPG) modules capable to function in off-grid islanded, genset-connected, and grid-connected modes of operation. System efficiency has an important role in order to harvest the maximum available renewable energy from dc or ac sources while providing power backup capability. A control strategy is proposed in off-grid islanded mode method based on the microgrid line-frequency control as agent of communication for energy control between the DPG modules. A critical case is where the ac load demand could be lower than the available power from the photovoltaic solar array, where the battery bank can be overcharged with unrecoverable damage consequences. The DPG voltage-forming module controls the battery charge algorithm with a frequency-generator function, and the DPG current source module controls its output current through a frequency-detection function. The physical installation between DPG modules is independent, since no additional communication wiring is needed between power modules, which represent another integration advantage within the microgrid-type application

    System Identification, Diagnosis, and Built-In Self-Test of High Switching Frequency DC-DC Converters

    abstract: Complex electronic systems include multiple power domains and drastically varying dynamic power consumption patterns, requiring the use of multiple power conversion and regulation units. High frequency switching converters have been gaining prominence in the DC-DC converter market due to smaller solution size (higher power density) and higher efficiency. As the filter components become smaller in value and size, they are unfortunately also subject to higher process variations and worse degradation profiles jeopardizing stable operation of the power supply. This dissertation presents techniques to track changes in the dynamic loop characteristics of the DC-DC converters without disturbing the normal mode of operation. A digital pseudo-noise (PN) based stimulus is used to excite the DC-DC system at various circuit nodes to calculate the corresponding closed-loop impulse response. The test signal energy is spread over a wide bandwidth and the signal analysis is achieved by correlating the PN input sequence with the disturbed output generated, thereby accumulating the desired behavior over time. A mixed-signal cross-correlation circuit is used to derive on-chip impulse responses, with smaller memory and lower computational requirement in comparison to a digital correlator approach. Model reference based parametric and non-parametric techniques are discussed to analyze the impulse response results in both time and frequency domain. The proposed techniques can extract open-loop phase margin and closed-loop unity-gain frequency within 5.2% and 4.1% error, respectively, for the load current range of 30-200mA. Converter parameters such as natural frequency (ω_n ), quality factor (Q), and center frequency (ω_c ) can be estimated within 3.6%, 4.7%, and 3.8% error respectively, over load inductance of 4.7-10.3µH, and filter capacitance of 200-400nF. A 5-MHz switching frequency, 5-8.125V input voltage range, voltage-mode controlled DC-DC buck converter is designed for the proposed built-in self-test (BIST) analysis. The converter output voltage range is 3.3-5V and the supported maximum load current is 450mA. The peak efficiency of the converter is 87.93%. The proposed converter is fabricated on a 0.6µm 6-layer-metal Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) technology with a die area of 9mm^2 .
