    Optical network technologies for future digital cinema

    Digital technology has transformed the information flow and support infrastructure for numerous application domains, such as cellular communications. Cinematography, traditionally, a film based medium, has embraced digital technology leading to innovative transformations in its work flow. Digital cinema supports transmission of high resolution content enabled by the latest advancements in optical communications and video compression. In this paper we provide a survey of the optical network technologies for supporting this bandwidth intensive traffic class. We also highlight the significance and benefits of the state of the art in optical technologies that support the digital cinema work flow

    A dimly lit auditorium, the smell of popcorn and hot-dogs accompanied by the sound of fizzy drinks slurped through straws; the lights dim and a hush of expectation descends, sound fades in from all around, drawing the audience into the illusion of another reality. This is the world of the cinema, but is it possible to recreate this cinematic surround sound experience in the home? In order to address this question it is necessary to understand what is meant by "cinematic" surround sound and to consider some of the challenges faced by those seeking to translate it to the home environment. This article examines these issues through an exploration of the development of surround sound in the cinema and its transference to the home and concludes with a tentative look towards possible future developments

    EXPERIMENTS IN MATERIALITY AND REPRESENTATION: THE LONDON FILM-MAKERS' CO-OPERATIVE 1968 – 1979

    My thesis is centered around the experimental films of the London Film-Makers’ Co-operative. Through the shared workshop spaces and the vision to defy conventional mainstream cinema, the self-led collective was influential in creating new directions of filmic techniques. Placed within a wider discourse of 1970’s experimental film, the aim of my research is to draw on the complexity of processes, narratives, and structures inherent in the Co-op films from 1968 – 1979. Through a technique-based examination, this project will focus on the shifts between abstracted and representational forms, and in turn how the dominant materialist practice began to be replaced by emerging critical feminist theories. Driven by a semiotically informed analysis of specific case studies, I will draw on a range of technical solutions to trace the changes in visual language. The Co-op’s history and its position within the British avant-garde is well recorded, but the interplay the artists had between material and representational reflexivity is an aspect that can be further explored within scholarship surrounding the organisation

    Following the celebration of the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies in 2015, this paper presents a survey of the exploitation of light throughout our history. Human beings started using light far into the Stone Age, in order to meet immediate needs, and widened its used when ancient civilizations developed. Other practical uses were conceived during the Middle Ages, some of which had a deep impact on social life. Nevertheless, it was after the Scientific Revolution and, to a wider extent, with the Industrial Revolution, that more devices were developed. The advancement of chemistry and electricity provided the ground and the tools for inventing a number of light-related devices, from photography to chemical and electrical lighting technologies. The deeper and broader scientific advancements of the twentieth century, throughout wave and quanta paradigms and the research on the interactions with matter at the sub-atomic level, have provided the knowledge for a much broader exploitation of light in several different fields, leading to the present technological domains of optoelectronics and photoelectronics, including cinema, image processing, lasers, photovoltaic cells, and optical discs. The recent success of fiber optics, white LEDs, and holography, evidence how vastly and deeply the interaction between light and man is still growing
