Changing Light: a plethora of digital tools as slides gasp their last?

    Get PDF
The title 'Changing Light' reflects the enormous changeover from analogue slides to digital images, both a cultural shift and a physical shift down to the change in light from the smoky beams of dual slide projectors piercing the dark of a classroom, to the bright white classrooms of the digital age. The evidence for the 'death of slides' has been mounting for a number of years and reported by visual resources curators in the US and the UK. In 2005 JISC funded AHDS Visual Arts to report on 'the effects of the digital image revolution on the UK arts education community'; the Association of Curators of Art and Design Images (ACADI), the Association of Art Historians (AAH), and the Art Libraries Society (ARLIS/UK & Ireland) contributed significantly to the Digital Picture initiative. However some of the issues highlighted by the final report are yet to be addressed such as provision of copyright-cleared digital images for use in education. This paper considers what arts education stands to lose from the 'death of slides' in the context of digital images and the plethora of digital presentation tools. As well as a change in light, there is a change from the physical tangible slide technology to the virtual digital image and computing in the cloud

Cryptoart: Ethical Challenges of the NFT Revolution

The digital transformation of the art world has become a revolution for the sector. Cryptoart, based on non-fungible tokens (NFT), is attracting the attention of artists, collectors and enthusiasts for its ability to tokenise any element that can be sold as art in the digital market. That means it is able to become a scarce resource and an economic asset by encapsulating the market value of a piece of digital art, which may or may not have a reference in the real world. This study will delve into the ethical aspects underlying what is known as the NFT Revolution, particularly impacts related to the abuse or destruction of cultural heritage, speculation and the generation of economic bubbles and environmental unsustainability

Understanding the Syrian Revolution Through Nontraditional Art

    Get PDF
In my thesis, I will explore the Syrian Revolution through the nontraditional arts that are being produced. I will be focusing on several different modes of creation, including street art, digital art, comics and cartoons, and installation. Social media is the primary tool for artists working in Syria to distribute their work, so I will also be discussing the importance of social media, both as a means to publish their work and also spread their message. I will answer the following questions: what role does street art and other nontraditional mediums play in the revolution? What are the artists’ purposes and intents when creating such pieces? How is social media relevant to the revolution? The answers to these questions and more will help to legitimize nontraditional arts, not only as examples of art themselves, but also as a means of communication. I hope to shed some light on the Syrian Revolution by looking at the war through the lens of an artist

The Transformation Of Archival Philosophy And Practice Through Digital Art

In many ways, digital practices have precipitated remarkable changes in the global accessibility of art. However, the digital revolution has also radically influenced the conservation processes surrounding art, including archiving, preserving, and remembering. This paper explores the conservation of digital (or “variable media”) artworks for the future benefit of culture, with particular peference to creators and viewers of art, as well as participants in interactive artworks. More specifically, this paper focuses on the philosophical and technical approaches adopted by creators, conservators, and philosophers involved in the preservation of variable media artworks. Issues of programming, interoperability between archival systems, and enhanced public access increasingly inform the design of digital archives. Indeed, the continuously shifting technological landscape—marked by the centrality of digital technologies to everyday life—problematizes the preservation of digital art through mainstream museological paradigms. Part of this analysis of digital art conservation will be drawn from the archival philosophies of Boris Groys and Rick Prelinger

Multimedia information technology and the annotation of video

The state of the art in multimedia information technology has not progressed to the point where a single solution is available to meet all reasonable needs of documentalists and users of video archives. In general, we do not have an optimistic view of the usability of new technology in this domain, but digitization and digital power can be expected to cause a small revolution in the area of video archiving. The volume of data leads to two views of the future: on the pessimistic side, overload of data will cause lack of annotation capacity, and on the optimistic side, there will be enough data from which to learn selected concepts that can be deployed to support automatic annotation. At the threshold of this interesting era, we make an attempt to describe the state of the art in technology. We sample the progress in text, sound, and image processing, as well as in machine learning

The emergence of digital art and its various variants such as computer art and digital media art is discussed. As well as, how this form of artistic and cultural expression is being affirmed in a contemporaneity characterized by the digital technological revolution. It analyses the nature of the creation and enjoyment of digital art and culture, related artistic practices and how in these, the computer artefact plays a pivotal role. Examples of artefacts are presented in context, promoting their recension in the light of contemporary digital art and culture, while discussing some elements of an aesthetics of the computer artefacts.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
