    Valorisation of history and landscape for promoting the memory of WWI

    10 p.In recent years many activities were conducted to commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the FirstWorld War (WWI) outbreak. Among these, the valorisation of history and landscape (VAST) project(http://vast.fbk.eu) was part of the initiatives promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento (Italy)as a tribute to WWI events in the region. The project was primarily aimed to document and promote,through 3D digitization approaches, ICT technologies and communication material, the memory of sites,theatre of the world conflict. The Trento’s area was under the Austro-Hungarian Empire until the end ofWWI and on the border with the Italian Kingdom. The area represented a crucial and bloody war frontbetween the Austrian and Italian territories. It was thus constellated of military fortresses, trenches andtunnels, most of them now ruined and at risk to slowly disappear. 3D surveying and modelling techniqueswere exploited to produce 3D digital models of structures and objects, along with virtual tours, dissem-ination material and a WebGIS of the area. All the products are now used for restoration, valorisation,educational and communication purposesS

    Digital 3D Technologies for Humanities Research and Education: An Overview

    Digital 3D modelling and visualization technologies have been widely applied to support research in the humanities since the 1980s. Since technological backgrounds, project opportunities, and methodological considerations for application are widely discussed in the literature, one of the next tasks is to validate these techniques within a wider scientific community and establish them in the culture of academic disciplines. This article resulted from a postdoctoral thesis and is intended to provide a comprehensive overview on the use of digital 3D technologies in the humanities with regards to (1) scenarios, user communities, and epistemic challenges; (2) technologies, UX design, and workflows; and (3) framework conditions as legislation, infrastructures, and teaching programs. Although the results are of relevance for 3D modelling in all humanities disciplines, the focus of our studies is on modelling of past architectural and cultural landscape objects via interpretative 3D reconstruction methods

    Communities in New Media started in 1998 as a workshop series at TU Dresden, and since then has annually dealt with online communities at the interface between several disciplines such as education and economics, computer science, social and communication sciences, and more. (See Köhler, Kahnwald & Schoop, 2015). The workshop is traditionally a forum for interdisciplinary dialogue between science and business and serves to share experiences and knowledge among participants from different disciplines, organisations, and institutions. In addition to the core themes of knowledge management and communities (in the chapters of the same name), the main focus of the conference is also on the support of knowledge and learning processes in the field of (media-assisted) higher education. This is complemented by an informational perspective when it comes to more functional and methodological approaches - use cases, workflows, and automation in knowledge management. In addition, systems and approaches for feedback, exchange, and ideas are presented. With the focus of knowledge media design and visual research as well as creative processes, this time there is also a highlight on visual aspects of knowledge management and mediation. For IFKAD 2016, three GeNeMe tracks were accepted which focus on the interface of knowledge communities and knowledge management as well as knowledge media design in science, business, or education.     Virtual Research Environment for digital 3D reconstructions – Standards, thresholds and prospects

     Since the 1990s the application of the digital 3D reconstruction and computer-based visualisation of cultural heritage increased. The virtual reconstruction and 3D visualisation revealed a new “glittering” research space for object-oriented disciplines such as archaeology, art history and architecture. Nevertheless the academics concerned with the uprising technology recognised early the lack of documentation standards in the 3D projects leading to the loss of information, findings and the fusion of knowledge behind the digital 3D representation. Based on the methodological fundamentals of the digital 3D reconstruction the potentials and challenges in the light of emerging Semantic Web and Web3D technologies will be introduced. The presentation subscribes a scientific methodology and a collaborative web-based research environment followed by crucial features for this kind of projects. As the groundwork a human- and machine-readable “language of objects” and the implementation of this semantic patterns for spatial research purposes on destroyed and/or never realised tangible cultural heritage will be discussed. Using examples from the practice the presentation explains the requirements of the Semantic Web (Linked Data), the role of controlled vocabularies, the architecture of the VRE and the impact of a customised integration of interactive 3D models within the WebGL technology. The presentation intends to showcase the state-of-the-art on the way to a digital research infrastructure. The focus lies on the introduction of scholarly approved and sustainable digital 3D reconstruction, complaint with recognised documentation standards and following the Linked Data requirements

    Hidden Cities

    This groundbreaking collection explores the convergence of the spatial and digital turns through a suite of smartphone apps (Hidden Cities) that present research-led itineraries in early modern cities as public history. The Hidden Cities apps have expanded from an initial case example of Renaissance Florence to a further five historic European cities. This collection considers how the medium structures new methodologies for site-based historical research, while also providing a platform for public history experiences that go beyond typical heritage priorities. It also presents guidelines for user experience design that reconciles the interests of researchers and end users. A central section of the volume presents the underpinning original scholarship that shapes the locative app trails, illustrating how historical research can be translated into public-facing work. The final section examines how history, delivered in the format of geolocated apps, offers new opportunities for collaboration and innovation: from the creation of museums without walls, connecting objects in collections to their original settings, to informing decision-making in city tourism management.     Navigating places of knowledge:The Modern Devotion and religious experience in late medieval Deventer

    This contribution will develop the two main themes of the Hidden Deventer walk: the visible presence of the Modern Devotion in the cityscape and the transmission of knowledge tied to physical spaces or lieux de savoir. Despite their professed ideals of “inwardness” and rejection of the world, the Brothers and Sisters of the Common Life remained present in the city centre. By calling attention to the interactions between communities of the Modern Devotion and the city they were a part of, this contribution will emphasize the “public history” of the religious movement and their continued involvement in urban life. In particular, the houses of Sisters and Brothers of the Common Life constituted “places of knowledge” in which knowledge was transmitted and shaped between religious professionals and urban lay people. Relations between family members remained important and aided the transmission of knowledge, as is clearly visible from the prayerbook and testaments of Katharina Kerstkens, the historical guide in the Hidden Deventer app. In addressing the interconnectedness of lieux de savoir, this contribution thus allows new considerations on the transmission of knowledge within late medieval Deventer
