    Inland Navigation Technology \u2709 - Digital Technology Impact on Safety and Efficiency

    This workshop discussed the impact of digital technology on inland navigation safety and efficiency from the combined perspective government agencies and waterway operators. The US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) described inland navigation Research & Development (R&D), related demonstration efforts, and Headquarters initiatives for safer, more reliable waterways and infrastructure. The US Coast Guard (USCG) addressed the latest developments in e-Navigation (e.g., electronic charts, AIS, and aidsto-navigation), and how these developments might affect inland waterways operations. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) discussed PORTS (Physical Oceanographic RealTime System) and other activities. Representatives from the Towing Industry, led by the American Waterways Operators Technology Steering Group, described current/future needs, as well as ongoing/planned initiatives to meet challenges associated with projected future increases in inland commerce

    Technology has altered how children experience language. As technology has taken root in society, literacy skills have expanded beyond simply reading and writing print texts to include interacting with digital texts and media. To prepare students to operate in this digital environment, teachers should integrate technology into language arts instruction; however, many teachers feel unprepared to do so effectively. Additionally, some teachers hesitate to implement technology into language arts instruction as a tool because of its supposed negative effects on literacy. Despite beliefs about technology inhibiting reading and writing, teachers can utilize technology to enhance literacy instruction.     In this paper we discuss a DSP course presented to both University students and to participants on industrial short courses. The "traditional" DSP course will typically run over one to two semesters and usually cover the fundamental mathematics of z-, Laplace and Fourier transforms, followed by the algorithm and application detail. In the course we will discuss, the use of advanced DSP software and integrated support software allow the presentation time to be greatly shortened and more focussed algorithm and application learning to be introduced. By combining the traditional lecture with the use of advanced DSP software, all harnessed by the web, we report on the objectives, syllabus, and mode of teaching
