Highlighting objects of interest in an image by integrating saliency and depth

Stereo images have been captured primarily for 3D reconstruction in the past. However, the depth information acquired from stereo can also be used along with saliency to highlight certain objects in a scene. This approach can be used to make still images more interesting to look at, and highlight objects of interest in the scene. We introduce this novel direction in this paper, and discuss the theoretical framework behind the approach. Even though we use depth from stereo in this work, our approach is applicable to depth data acquired from any sensor modality. Experimental results on both indoor and outdoor scenes demonstrate the benefits of our algorithm

    Graph Spectral Image Processing

Recent advent of graph signal processing (GSP) has spurred intensive studies of signals that live naturally on irregular data kernels described by graphs (e.g., social networks, wireless sensor networks). Though a digital image contains pixels that reside on a regularly sampled 2D grid, if one can design an appropriate underlying graph connecting pixels with weights that reflect the image structure, then one can interpret the image (or image patch) as a signal on a graph, and apply GSP tools for processing and analysis of the signal in graph spectral domain. In this article, we overview recent graph spectral techniques in GSP specifically for image / video processing. The topics covered include image compression, image restoration, image filtering and image segmentation

Using disparity for quality assessment of stereoscopic images

International audience3DTV has been widely studied these last years from a technical point of view but the related quality evaluations does not follow this enthusiasm. This article reviews the quality assessment for 3DTV. Compared to 2D quality measure, the third dimension adds several new problems and quality assessment becomes a complex issue. Nevertheless, efforts made for 2D content quality estimation can be used for an extension to 3D. In this paper we propose a first attempt to adapt such 2D metrics to 3D content and add the contribution of a measure of the distortion on the disparity map for stereoscopic image pairs. This 3D metric performances has been evaluated with subjective tests

Disparity-compensated view synthesis for s3D content correction

International audienceThe production of stereoscopic 3D HD content is considerably increasing and experience in 2-view acquisition is in progress. High quality material to the audience is required but not always ensured, and correction of the stereo views may be required. This is done via disparity-compensated view synthesis. A robust method has been developed dealing with these acquisition problems that introduce discomfort (e.g hyperdivergence and hyperconvergence...) as well as those ones that may disrupt the correction itself (vertical disparity, color difference between views...). The method has three phases: a preprocessing in order to correct the stereo images and estimate features (e.g. disparity range...) over the sequence. The second (main) phase proceeds then to disparity estimation and view synthesis. Dual disparity estimation based on robust block-matching, discontinuity-preserving filtering, consistency and occlusion handling has been developed. Accurate view synthesis is carried out through disparity compensation. Disparity assessment has been introduced in order to detect and quantify errors. A post-processing deals with these errors as a fallback mode. The paper focuses on disparity estimation and view synthesis of HD images. Quality assessment of synthesized views on a large set of HD video data has proved the effectiveness of our method
