    Impact of Coastal Erosion and Sedimentation along the Northern Coast of Sinai Peninsula

    Coastal engineering activities during the past five decades have resulted in considerable shoreline change along the northern coast of Sinai Peninsula. In the west of El Arish Power Plant, sediment accretion has reached the tip of the breakwater of the cooling water intake basin necessitating extensive dredging inside the basin. In the east of El Arish Harbor, the shoreline is continuously retreating. Previous activities to mitigate the erosion have not succeeded. For example, the groin field in the east of the El Arish Harbor has transferred the problem to the neighboring beaches farther downcoast. In this study predominant coastal processes affecting the erosion of the Sinai northern coastline were investigated. Wave-induced longshore currents were found to be responsible for transporting the littoral drift along the coastline. Longshore sediment transport, from Port Said to Ashqelon, was quantified and the general patterns of erosion-accretion were determined by looking upon the gradients between transport rates along the coast. Particular emphasis was placed on shoreline change due to perturbations introduced by infrastructure sited at the coastline near El Arish. The shoreline change at El Arish Power Plant and Harbor were modeled using the coastal evolution model GENESIS. Having understood the coastal processes driving the shoreline change at these two locations, appropriate remedial measures were proposed to mitigate the problem. In this regard, a combination of hard and soft coastal engineering methods are presented to alleviate the dredging problem at the power plant while sand-bypassing/beach-nourishment is suggested as an effective sustainable solution to the erosion problem in the east of El Arish Harbor

    Two-dimensional beam tracing from visibility diagrams for real-time acoustic rendering

    We present an extension of the fast beam-tracing method presented in the work of Antonacci et al. (2008) for the simulation of acoustic propagation in reverberant environments that accounts for diffraction and diffusion. More specifically, we show how visibility maps are suitable for modeling propagation phenomena more complex than specular reflections. We also show how the beam-tree lookup for path tracing can be entirely performed on visibility maps as well. We then contextualize such method to the two different cases of channel (point-to-point) rendering using a headset, and the rendering of a wave field based on arrays of speakers. Finally, we provide some experimental results and comparisons with real data to show the effectiveness and the accuracy of the approach in simulating the soundfield in an environment

    Challenges in measuring "connectedness to nature" among indigenous children: lessons from the Negev Bedouin

    Culturally adapted tools for measuring connectedness to nature are important, since attitudes and perceptions toward nature cannot be universalized. They are influenced by a wide range of factors, like individuals’ experience in their home environment, safety concerns and a variety of other sociocultural factors. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a model for a cultural adaptation process, through which suitable nature connectedness questionnaires can be created. Our approach is based on “Third Space Theory,” which laid the groundwork for the development of culturally adapted questionnaires that combine Western categories for measuring nature connectedness with elements that specifically reflect the local culture of an indigenous community. The paper details the adaptation process of a questionnaire designed to learn about the nature connectedness of 5th grade students living in unrecognized Bedouin villages in the Negev Desert. The process enlisted the input of 58 fifth grade students (28 boys and 30 girls) and four professionals from the fields of education and environmental education. It incorporated two different types of interviews, personal, semi-structured interviews, and interviews with small groups of students as they orally completed different iterations of the questionnaire. Thematic content analysis was conducted to reveal the various sociocultural aspects of the relationship between Bedouin children and their natural environment. The results of the paper include: (a) the seven-stage development process of the culturally adapted nature connectedness questionnaire, and (b) examples of the types of information that the culturally adapted questionnaire reveals, which a standard nature connectedness questionnaire might not provide

    An electromagnetic simulator for sentinel-3 sar altimeter waveforms over land part ii: forests

    Forests play a crucial role in the climate change mitigation by acting as sinks for carbon and, consequently, reducing the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere and slowing global warming. For this reason, above ground biomass (AGB) estimation is essential for effectively monitoring forest health around the globe. Although remote sensing–based forest AGB quantification can be pursued in different ways, in this work we discuss a new technique for vegetation observation through the use of altimetry data that has been introduced by the ESA-funded ALtimetry for BIOMass (ALBIOM) project. ALBIOM investigates the possibility of retrieving forest biomass through Copernicus Sentinel-3 Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL) measurements at Ku- and C-bands in low- and high-resolution mode. To reach this goal, a simulator able to reproduce the altimeter acquisition system and the scattering phenomena that occur in the interaction of the radar altimeter pulse with vegetated surfaces has been developed. The Tor Vergata Vegetation Scattering Model (TOVSM) developed at Tor Vergata University has been exploited to simulate the contribution from the vegetation volume via the modelling of the backscattering of forest canopy through a discrete scatterer representation. A modification of the SAVERS (Soil And Vegetation Reflection Simulator) simulator developed by the team for Global Navigation Satellite System Reflectometry over land has also been taken into account to simulate the soil contribution
