An analytical model of the virtual collision handler of 802.11e

A number of analytical models have been proposed to describe the priority schemes of the Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA) mechanism of the IEEE 802.11e standard. EDCA provides a class-based differentiated Quality of Service (QoS) to IEEE 802.11 WLANs. Many have used a multiple number of nodes to study the differentiation behaviour of the model. However, in many real-life usage scenarios Internet traffic is often asymmetric with much downlink traffic from the access point to the stations and little traffic in the reverse direction. Hence, most of the overall traffic differentiation will happen in the Virtual Collision Handler (VCH) of the access point. If the access point uses EDCA, it should know the characteristics of the VCH to be able to control the differentiation of the downlink traffic. The main contribution of this paper opposed to other works is that it demonstrates how a generic channel model of 802.11e can be modified to predict the behaviour of the VCH with a remarkably good accuracy. In doing so, we first introduce virtual collision handling into the generic model. We observe good match between the analytical model and simulations

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 80-84).Recent times has seen a tremendous increase in the deployment and use of 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). These networks are easy to deploy and maintain, while providing reasonably high data rates at a low cost. In the paradigm of Next-Generation-Networks (NGNs), WLANs can be seen as an important access network technology to support IP multimedia services. However a traditional WLAN does not provide Quality of Service (QoS) support since it was originally designed for best effort operation. The IEEE 802. 11e standard was introduced to overcome the lack of QoS support for the legacy IEEE 802 .11 WLANs. It enhances the Media Access Control (MAC) layer operations to incorporate service differentiation. However, there is a need to prevent overloading of wireless channels, since the QoS experienced by traffic flows is degraded with heavily loaded channels. An admission control scheme for IEEE 802.11e WLANs would be the best solution to limit the amount of multimedia traffic so that channel overloading can be prevented. Some of the work in the literature proposes admission control solutions to protect the QoS of real-time traffic for IEEE 802.11e Enhanced Distributed Channel Access (EDCA). However, these solutions often under-utilize the resources of the wireless channels. A measurement-aided model-based admission control scheme for IEEE 802.11e EDCA WLANs is proposed to provide reasonable bandwidth guarantees to all existing flows. The admission control scheme makes use of bandwidth estimations that allows the bandwidth guarantees of all the flows that are admitted into the network to be protected. The bandwidth estimations are obtained using a developed analytical model of IEEE 802.11e EDCA channels. The admission control scheme also aims to accept the maximum amount of flows that can be accommodated by the network's resources. Through simulations, the performance of the proposed admission control scheme is evaluated using NS-2. Results show that accurate bandwidth estimations can be obtained when comparing the estimated achievable bandwidth to actual simulated bandwidth. The results also validate that the bandwidth needs of all admitted traffic are always satisfied when the admission control scheme is applied. It was also found that the admission control scheme allows the maximum amount of flows to be admitted into the network, according the network's capacity

Multimedia application is currently making much impact in this technological era. It has been thekey driving force behind the convergence of fixed, mobile and IP networks. Furthermore, real-timeapplications are making head way in vehicular networks, mission critical applications which usededicated short range communications (DSRC). 802.l i e standards support quality of services(QoS) guarantees in these applications. This is opposed to the problem with 802.11 legacy whichis based on distributed coordination function (DCF), and its inability to prioritized applications forservice differentiation. Simulation was done on various 802.l i e networks which use enhancedDCF (EDCF). In these simulations, it was observed that controlling low priority applicationsenhances the effectiveness of high priority applications. Different MAC and traffic generationparameters were used in various scenarios. It was actually observed that high priority applicationshave greater impacts on the performance of the network and hence performs better when itcomes to delay and throughput requirements. Even when the number of high priority applicationswere reduced, the results obtained was still able to satisfy QoS requirements for each traffic type. Results for different scenarios were taken and discussed. Also, differentiated values of delay, throughput and packet loss were recorded when same and different values of MAC and trafficgeneration parameters were used. In all results the International Telecommunications Union (ITU-T) values of these metrics parameters were kept low. These make the network design suitable forroad safety application where very low delay is required for emergency messages and tolerabledelay in routine messages. The results obtained show th at, this network can be applicable inroad safety, simply because of the low delay, and low loss which implies , messages to cars canbe successfully delivered and also good throughput. 802.11 legacy standard lacks servicedifferentiation that limits QoS support for real-time applications. These simulations were able tohandle the drawback associated with this standard and prefer a better standard which is 802.l i ethat provides differentiated access to the metrics that was used in analyzing QoS in this research

This thesis addresses the problem of optimizing network resource usage, for the delivery of Group Services, in Next Generation Networks featuring broadcast technologies. In this scope, proposals are made according to the expected evolution of 3G networks into Next Generation Heterogeneous Networks that include broadcast technologies such as DVB. Group Communication resource optimization is considered a vertical challenge that must cross several layers. The optimizations here proposed cover both Application to Service Platform interfaces for group communication services, and Core Network to Radio Access Network interface abstractions and mappings. The proposed optimizations are also presented taking into consideration network evolution path towards an All-IP based Next Generation Network. First it is addressed the Application to Service Platform optimization, which can already be deployed over 3G networks. This optimization could potentiate the development of new and innovative applications that through the use of broadcast/multicast service delivery mechanisms could be more efficient network wise. Next proposals are made on the Core Network to Radio Access Network interfaces that address the heterogeneity of future networks and consider the need to support broadcast networks. It is also considered the possibility to increase the Quality of Service of broadcast/multicast services based on the dynamic mapping of IP multicast into unicast radio bearers. In order to validate these optimizations, several prototypes were built based on an advanced access router for next generation networks. Such access router functionalities and software architecture are also presented here

Analysis of SoftToken: a coordinated Medium Access Control (MAC) for IEEE 802.11 based wireless mesh networks

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) which can be integrated to other types of networks at a reasonable cost are good candidates to facilitate the efficient and flexible deployment of Next Generation Networks (NGNs). Due to the widespread presence of IEEE 802.11Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) most of current WMNs are based on this technology. However, IEEE 802.11 is primarly designed for one-hop networks and its random access protocol (CSMA/CA) is problematic in multi-hop environments due to collisions, which decrease efficiency and service quality. To alleviate these problems a novel approach, SoftToken, was proposed to provide a coordinated Medium Access Control (MAC) for WLANs whose goal is to add a token-passing mechanism on top of the standard IEEE 802.11 in a way that collisions can be avoided. In this thesis, we present an analysis and evaluation of SoftToken in various scenarios. We also develop some functions to integrate this protocol into the architecture designed by the CARrier grade MEsh Networks (CARMEN) project.

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 70-74).This research proposes a scheme to accomplish the task of network selection; this is achieved by enhancing existing QoS provisioning approaches. The scheme models the radio access network as a network of queuing nodes. With the model, the link layer QoS statistics of user traffic in each available path through the network is determined. The author postulates that the statistics indicate the QoS capabilities of the network and can therefore be used to select the best network to serve the mobile user
