    Free Search of real value or how to make computers think

    This book introduces in detail Free Search - a novel advanced method for search and optimisation. It also deals with some essential questions that have been raised in a strong debate following the publication of this method in journal and conference papers. In the light of this debate, Free Search deserves serious attention, as it appears to be superior to other competitive methods in the context of the experimental results obtained. This superiority is not only quantitative in terms of the actual optimal value found but also qualitative in terms of independence from initial conditions and adaptation capabilities in an unknown environment

    This paper presents an exploration of Free Search (FS) and modified Differential Evolution (DE) with enhanced adaptivity. The aim of the study is to identify how these methods can cope with changes of the number of variables of a hard design test, unaided. The results suggest that both methods can adapt successfully to the variation of the number of variables and constraint conditions. The results are presented. Contributions to the engineering design are replacement in high extent of human based search with machine based and movement of optimisation process from human guided to machine self guided search

    Population extremal optimisation for discrete multi-objective optimisation problems

    The power to solve intractable optimisation problems is often found through population based evolutionary methods. These include, but are not limited to, genetic algorithms, particle swarm optimisation, differential evolution and ant colony optimisation. While showing much promise as an effective optimiser, extremal optimisation uses only a single solution in its canonical form – and there are no standard population mechanics. In this paper, two population models for extremal optimisation are proposed and applied to a multi-objective version of the generalised assignment problem. These models use novel intervention/interaction strategies as well as collective memory in order to allow individual population members to work together. Additionally, a general non-dominated local search algorithm is developed and tested. Overall, the results show that improved attainment surfaces can be produced using population based interactions over not using them. The new EO approach is also shown to be highly competitive with an implementation of NSGA-II.No Full Tex

    Bat Algorithm: Literature Review and Applications

    Bat algorithm (BA) is a bio-inspired algorithm developed by Yang in 2010 and BA has been found to be very efficient. As a result, the literature has expanded significantly in the last 3 years. This paper provides a timely review of the bat algorithm and its new variants. A wide range of diverse applications and case studies are also reviewed and summarized briefly here.     Multiobjective genetic algorithm strategies for electricity production from generation IV nuclear technology

    Development of a technico-economic optimization strategy of cogeneration systems of electricity/hydrogen, consists in finding an optimal efficiency of the generating cycle and heat delivery system, maximizing the energy production and minimizing the production costs. The first part of the paper is related to the development of a multiobjective optimization library (MULTIGEN) to tackle all types of problems arising from cogeneration. After a literature review for identifying the most efficient methods, the MULTIGEN library is described, and the innovative points are listed. A new stopping criterion, based on the stagnation of the Pareto front, may lead to significant decrease of computational times, particularly in the case of problems involving only integer variables. Two practical examples are presented in the last section. The former is devoted to a bicriteria optimization of both exergy destruction and total cost of the plant, for a generating cycle coupled with a Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR). The second example consists in designing the heat exchanger of the generating turbomachine. Three criteria are optimized: the exchange surface, the exergy destruction and the number of exchange modules
