Coastal Resource Management in the Wider Caribbean: Resilience, Adaptation, and Community Diversity
The Caribbean Sea is the second largest sea in the world, including more than 30 insular and continental countries with an approximate population of 35 million. In addition to its highly fractionalized territory, it is characterized by a great linguistic and cultural diversity, a phenomenon enhanced by increasing internal migrations and the expansion of tourism. The implementation of coastal management programs, often embedded in top-down approaches, is therefore faced with a series of ecological and social constraints, explaining why they have had only limited success. This book presents an alternative look at existing coastal management initiatives in the North America (Caribbean); focusing on the need to pay more attention to the local community. Emphasizing the great heterogeneity of Caribbean communities, the book shows how the diversity of ecosystems and cultures has generated a significant resilience and capacity to adapt, in which the notion of community itself has to be re-examined. The concluding chapter presents lessons learned and a series of practical recommendations for decision-makers

Adaptive hypermedia for education and training
Adaptive hypermedia (AH) is an alternative to the traditional, one-size-fits-all approach in the development of hypermedia systems. AH systems build a model of the goals, preferences, and knowledge of each individual user; this model is used throughout the interaction with the user to adapt to the needs of that particular user (Brusilovsky, 1996b). For example, a student in an adaptive educational hypermedia system will be given a presentation that is adapted specifically to his or her knowledge of the subject (De Bra & Calvi, 1998; Hothi, Hall, & Sly, 2000) as well as a suggested set of the most relevant links to proceed further (Brusilovsky, Eklund, & Schwarz, 1998; Kavcic, 2004). An adaptive electronic encyclopedia will personalize the content of an article to augment the user's existing knowledge and interests (Bontcheva & Wilks, 2005; Milosavljevic, 1997). A museum guide will adapt the presentation about every visited object to the user's individual path through the museum (Oberlander et al., 1998; Stock et al., 2007). Adaptive hypermedia belongs to the class of user-adaptive systems (Schneider-Hufschmidt, Kühme, & Malinowski, 1993). A distinctive feature of an adaptive system is an explicit user model that represents user knowledge, goals, and interests, as well as other features that enable the system to adapt to different users with their own specific set of goals. An adaptive system collects data for the user model from various sources that can include implicitly observing user interaction and explicitly requesting direct input from the user. The user model is applied to provide an adaptation effect, that is, tailor interaction to different users in the same context. In different kinds of adaptive systems, adaptation effects could vary greatly. In AH systems, it is limited to three major adaptation technologies: adaptive content selection, adaptive navigation support, and adaptive presentation. The first of these three technologies comes from the fields of adaptive information retrieval (IR) and intelligent tutoring systems (ITS). When the user searches for information, the system adaptively selects and prioritizes the most relevant items (Brajnik, Guida, & Tasso, 1987; Brusilovsky, 1992b)
From Physics Model to Results: An Optimizing Framework for Cross-Architecture Code Generation
Starting from a high-level problem description in terms of partial
differential equations using abstract tensor notation, the Chemora framework
discretizes, optimizes, and generates complete high performance codes for a
wide range of compute architectures. Chemora extends the capabilities of
Cactus, facilitating the usage of large-scale CPU/GPU systems in an efficient
manner for complex applications, without low-level code tuning. Chemora
achieves parallelism through MPI and multi-threading, combining OpenMP and
CUDA. Optimizations include high-level code transformations, efficient loop
traversal strategies, dynamically selected data and instruction cache usage
strategies, and JIT compilation of GPU code tailored to the problem
characteristics. The discretization is based on higher-order finite differences
on multi-block domains. Chemora's capabilities are demonstrated by simulations
of black hole collisions. This problem provides an acid test of the framework,

The purpose of this document is to provide researchers and resource managers with an adequate basis of knowledge to further development of scientific studies and applied management investigations. This document describes the different physical ecosystem components, ecological processes, habitats, and watersheds of the Reserve.
The Mission-Aransas NERR is a complex of wetland, terrestrial, and marine environments. The land is primarily coastal prairie with unique oak motte habitats. The wetlands include riparian habitat, and freshwater and salt water marshes. Within the water areas, the bays are large, open, and include extensive wind tidal flats, seagrass meadows, mangroves, and oyster reefs. This site profile describes each habitat by their location, type, distribution, abundance, current status and trends, issues of concerns, and future research plans.
Research within the Mission-Aransas NERR seeks to improve the understanding of the Texas coastal zone ecosystems structure and function. Current research includes: nutrient loading and transformation, estimates of community metabolism, water quality monitoring, freshwater inflow, climate change and fishery habitat. Harmful algal blooms, zooplankton, coliform bacteria, submerged aquatic vegetation, and marsh grass are monitored through the System- Wide Monitoring Program (SWMP). From the nineties, the Internet has been providing new political hybrid action forms. At the
same time, some communities make a disruptive use of technologies aiming to subvert
network power relationships at the current capitalized and centralized cyberspace.
Addressing a collaborative mapping, we identified 290 free culture communities in
Spain. Their characteristics suggest the relevance of offline spaces and local areas to
deliberate, propose and perform political participation towards a neutral, centralised

Eco‐Holonic 4.0 Circular Business Model to Conceptualize Sustainable Value Chain Towards Digital Transition
The purpose of this paper is to conceptualize a circular business model based on an Eco-Holonic Architecture, through the integration of circular economy and holonic principles. A conceptual model is developed to manage the complexity of integrating circular economy principles, digital transformation, and tools and frameworks for sustainability into business models. The proposed architecture is multilevel and multiscale in order to achieve the instantiation of the sustainable value chain in any territory. The architecture promotes the incorporation of circular economy and holonic principles into new circular business models. This integrated perspective of business model can support the design and upgrade of the manufacturing companies in their respective industrial sectors. The conceptual model proposed is based on activity theory that considers the interactions between technical and social systems and allows the mitigation of the metabolic rift that exists between natural and social metabolism. This study contributes to the existing literature on circular economy, circular business models and activity theory by considering holonic paradigm concerns, which have not been explored yet. To Touch a Story: Crisis and Textual Textures in Argentine Queer Writing
This essay examines two queer literary chapbooks published by art gallery/press Belleza y Felicidad (ByF) in the context of the Argentine 2001 social and economic crisis to show that these texts imagine reading as a performance which entails doing, touching, and being touched back. Through their visual, verbal, and material elements, these works imagine new relations between literature and everyday life and practices in a period in which those practices were dramatically altered. Offering a verbal/visual platform from where to reflect on the deployment of touch and the haptic beyond strictly visual or filmic disciplinary realms, these writings exploit their material dimensions to build specifically literary, historically located "textual textures". This article argues that textual textures contribute to shed light on how these works resonate with, register, and critically intervene in the crisis context
