Knowledge Representation with Ontologies: The Present and Future
Recently, we have seen an explosion of interest in ontologies as
artifacts to represent human knowledge and as critical components in
knowledge management, the semantic Web, business-to-business
applications, and several other application areas. Various research
communities commonly assume that ontologies are the appropriate modeling
structure for representing knowledge. However, little discussion has
occurred regarding the actual range of knowledge an ontology can
successfully represent

A tri-axial electromagnetic induction tool for hydraulic fracture diagnostics
The monitoring and diagnostics of induced fractures are important for the real-time performance evaluation of hydraulic fracturing operations. Previous electromagnetic (EM) based studies show that single backbone tri-axial induction logging tools are promising candidates for the real-time monitoring and diagnosis of fractures in uncased wells. To support the development of field deployable tools, the concept must be tested in experiments, in a controllable environment, before it is tested under field-like conditions. To this end, we have developed numerical tools which can simulate any wellbore environment while logging hydraulic fractures with the induction tool. We have designed and built a prototype induction tool and performed two sets of tests to compare with numerical simulation results. The computational and experimental setup consists of tri-axial transmitter and receiver coils in co-axial, co-planar and cross-polarized configurations. Both lab and shallow earth measurements are shown to be in good agreement with simulations for all examined cases. The average relative and maximum discrepancies of the measured signals from the simulated ones were lower than 3% and 10%, respectively. With the prototype tool, strong signals sensitive to the fracture’s surface area and dip-angle were measured in the co-axial coil configuration, while weaker signals sensitive to the fracture’s aspect ratio were observed in the co-planar configuration. Cross-polarized signals are also shown to be strong and sensitive to the fracture’s dip. Lastly, we resolved the detectable components of the measured signal tensor to obtain parameters for simplified fracture geometries. The inversion algorithm, a derivative free directional search model, uses an objective function defined as a combination of co-axial and cross-polarized signals from different tool spacing, and the function provides a well behaved global minimum. The robustness of the inversion algorithm is tested on synthetic data for single cluster fractures in a homogeneous and heterogeneous background electrical conductivity. All the effective model parameters for different cases, electrical conductivity, size and dip-angle, are shown to be recovered with good accuracy. We also evaluated the effect of neighboring fractures and suggested a multi-cluster inversion path which can recover the proppant distribution in a stage very accurately. Based on the numerical and experimental results we suggest a tool with specifications that can effectively recover far-field proppant distribution in the fractures.Petroleum and Geosystems Engineerin
Using of versine and sagitta calculations for log sawing optimization, part 1: Circular cross-section
Log sawing can be defined as a problem with obtaining squares from a cylindrical shaped raw material, log. There are traditional sawing methods such as live, cant, quarter, etc. for sawmills. However, they cant generally obtain maximum yield due to log and lumber variables for each log. Therefore, many mathematical approaches and computer programs were improved for log sawing. In this study, suitability of two geometrical calculations, versine and sagitta, were tried for log sawing process. Logs were assumed having cylindrical shape and circular cross section. The estimation accuracy of calculations were tested for live and cant sawing methods with in a drawing software. The results showed that one of versine equations works almost as well as the real dimensions. It is suggested that the equation can be used inside of algorithms for log sawing optimization. However, the real log defects such as taper, irregular cross-section, curvature, etc. should be considered for more realistic yield and accuracy
Multi-period, multi-product production planning in an uncertain manufacturing environment
Closed-Form Solution for Secondary Perturbation Displacement in Finite-Element-Implemented Koiter’s Theory
The finite-element-implemented Koiter’s initial postbuckling analysis has not managed to convince commercial finite element code developers to incorporate it into their codes to benefit structural designers and analysts. Three key obstacles have been identified. With two of them being resolved recently, the present paper addressed the remaining one, namely, the efficient solution of the second-order perturbation equation. A closed-form solution is obtained, which is more computationally efficient than any approach adopted in the past. The closed-form solution is obtained mathematically rigorously, and in the meantime it is computational efficient. The approach applies also to problems where buckling is of multiple modes. The solution procedure established in this paper has been verified and demonstrated through a structural application
Assessing gaps and needs for integrating building performance optimization tools in net zero energy buildings design
This paper summarizes a study undertaken to reveal potential challenges and opportunities for integrating optimization tools in net zero energy buildings (NZEB) design. The paper reviews current trends in simulation-based building performance optimization (BPO) and outlines major criteria for optimization tools selection and evaluation. This is based on analyzing user's needs for tools capabilities and requirement specifications. The review is carried out by means of a literature review of 165 publications and interviews with 28 optimization experts. The findings are based on an inter-group comparison between experts. The aim is to assess the gaps and needs for integrating BPO tools in NZEB design. The findings indicate a breakthrough in using evolutionary algorithms in solving highly constrained envelope, HVAC and renewable optimization problems. Simple genetic algorithm solved many design and operation problems and allowed measuring the improvement in the optimality of a solution against a base case. Evolutionary algorithms are also easily adapted to enable them to solve a particular optimization problem more effectively. However, existing limitations including model uncertainty, computation time, difficulty of use and steep learning curve. Some future directions anticipated or needed for improvement of current tools are presented.Peer reviewe
An integrated planning model for multi-supplier, multi-facility, multi-customer, multi-product and multi-period : application to the wood furniture industry

Measuring system qualification for LHC arc quadrupole magnets
Currently the LHC Project at CERN has reached the construction phase. The superconducting magnets of this new accelerator work at superfluid helium temperature. The "arc quadrupoles" (360 pieces), which focus the beam have to be measured at a temperature of 1.9 Kelvin with outstanding precision: The measurement aims to reach a reproducibility of 1.5 · 10^-4 for the field integral, 2 ppm for the harmonic content of the main field and 0.15mm for the position of the axis. A specially developed scanner allows the simultaneous measurement of the field axis and quality. This thesis demonstrates that the system as it stands fulfils the high requirements with respect to the magnetic measurement and the magnetic axis and thus provides the desired unique versatile equipment. The assessment was performed based on experimental results, direct calibration and using a new simulation tool. The main defects treated are mechanical torsion and vibration of moving parts, electrical noise and power supply ripple
